Yeah the first one is comparing to the opening of the first Dune in local currency and the second one in dollars. The brazilian real is a bit stronger now than from when Dune 1 released.

1M tickets were sold and R$25M on the box office, down 12% from last weekend.

 

I, for one, am proud of nailing it with my Dune 2 predictions lol. And just like I predicted, saturday was really strong with most movies doubling from the previous day and that helped all the movies to compensate the poor thursday and friday. Dune 2's opening is twice of the original, I would expect strong legs.

 

This weekend Demon Slayer passed Swordsmire and it is now the highest grossing movie from the franchise, and Boy and the Heron passed Spirited Away's R$2.6M total and it is now the highest grossing original anime.

 

Next weekend releases The Iron Claw, All of Us Strangers, No Way Up, Os Farofeiros 2, Apaixonada and 20 Days in Mariupol.

Last weekend, around 7.3% of all tickets sold from Dune 2 came from Imax, a total of 30.5k tickets sold. Yesterday Dune 2 sold 52k tickets.

Fun fact, that Leave movie with 115 screens is from 2022, it only got a release in Brazil now.

Os Farofeiros 2 released on the first place yesterday with R$1M and 58k admissions. That is a good opening, compared to the first movie is similar on the box office for the first day, down 15k+ on admissions

 

Dune 2 is in second on thursday not that far behind, around R$800-900k and 620k admissions total and both should fight for the lead on weekend. No Way Up is in 3rd with 8k admissions, Madame Web is down from a cliff decreasing 70% from last thursday while Anatomy of a Fall have a massive 124% boost.

Overall this weekend increased 11%, with 1.2M tickets sold and R$27.1M on the box office.

 

Os Farofeiros 2 had the third best opening of the year and second best for a brazilian movie, and had an opening around 88% of the first movie. The first one would then leg out to sell 2.6M admissions. Dune 2 is not far behind and had a great second weekend, the total on box office and admissions of the first one are long pass now and it will reach 1 million admissions the next couple of days.

 

Anyone But You passed 2 million admissions while Madame Web is on her way out, probably next weekend. Boy and the Heron passed Pokemon 3 and is not the 4th best selling anime movie of all time, and with only R$100K behind 2014's Saint Seya it will pass before next weekend. Also expect a boost from the Oscar movies soon.

 

Next weekend will be a slow one with the release of One Life and Imaginary.

Dune 2 is aaaaaalmost at 1M admissions, only 5k more to get there. Oscar boost is already on, with Anatomy of a Fall growing 31%, Past Lives growing 23.1% and Perfect Days growing 2.8%, besides Poor Things, Zone of Interest and Boy and Heron having minimal drops.

Os Farofeiros 2 and Dune 2 saw pretty good holds, however the two big releases (Imaginary and One Life) both bombed and pushed down the weekend. The lack of family content is start to show too. Dune 2 is now above 1 million tickets sold while Os Farofeiros 2 should do it today or tomorrow, closing 10 movies so far to reach the mark this year. Poor Things and Boy and the Heron keep having amazing legs, helped by the Oscar buzz.

 

Next weekend should turn things around with the release of Kung Fu Panda 4, The Chosen: S4 Episodes 7-8, Saudosa Maloca, The First Day of My Life and Alice in Terrorland.

With Farofeiros 2 and Dune 2 passing the 1 million admissions we now have 10 movies to reach the mark this year, and this is how the yearly top 10 is looking so far. Compared to last year, 2024 so far is running 4% ahead of the same period. One major difference though is that compared to last year the box office is far more spread out, for example, at this point last year only 4 movies passed 1 million admissions and it would only take until may for 10 movies managed to sell 1 million admissions.

The Chosen opened on thursday with R$1.3M and 69.9k admissions. This is 277% above the previous Chosen and it will completely outsell it's 100k admissions total before the end of the weekend. Kung Fu Panda 4 opened with R$1.2M and 67.1k admissions, best opening day for an animation in 2024 (Above Wish and Migration), best opening day for the franchise and above the third movie by 18%. Overall, the thursday sold R$3.2M and grown 65% compared to the same day last weekend.
