THE LITTLE MERMAID | 271.5M overseas | 569.6M worldwide

Which policies?

Mainly short theatrical windows cutting off legs in Japan due to Disney+, causing lots of theaters to drop their films immediately once they hit streaming. Disney+ has hit Disney's box office in Japan especially hard since it's probably the leggiest market in the world, with certain films playing strong even 6 months after release.

Japan screwed over AWOW. The only market where it sorta flopped. Even crap like TROS did well there.

And Usa and Canada screwed Your Name which grossed just 5M despite being the best animated movie screened that year in their theaters...

And they screwed over Suzume with very little to none marketing despite having Sony's marketing muscle.

Avatar won't good at all per my distance relatives. TROS atleast watchable

Original Film had 3D novelty factor and nothing to do with WOM. Ranking 24th place among all-time WOM for a film above ¥10B Grosser while Titanic was at 4th place ~ you can see what a terrific drop from Titanic for Avatar (2009) meaning Original Film wasn't anything for us ~ just the technology influence has been driving the people to watch. FYI, TGM, SLAM DUNK &Bohemian Rhapsody are all time best rated film at 1st, 2nd &3rd.

Are you serious? TROS is absolutely unwatchable. It isn't a movie but a discarded video game.

Jokes asides, but Star Wars is a family brand here. Even, with lots of hype for Endgame, it couldn't take down EP VII OD records. I have check trend in other Asian Market. But, Japan is the biggest Asian Market for Star Wars (excl. China ofc). This will be the only brand that Disney can depend upon in Future.

China doesn't give a shit about star wars, TFA had a good performance as novelty and then the franchise collapsed. TROS didn't even make 20% of TFA lmao.

I didn't notice that. But, Disney so far have nothing to offer in Japan whether it's animation which Universal already got an upper hand. Nor a live action film - Warner Bros Field. Upcoming performances of Avatar Sequels &Frozen 3, TS5, Zootopia 2 will be interesting.

Since, This is a The Little Mermaid Thread ~ Disney Future in Japan will totally be determined by TLM success

Were there new openings or this was a good drop?

As far as I can tell, all of the major openings were last week minus Japan which will open next week so this was a great hold OS!

Gitesh is unnecessarily pessimistic IMO. Summer will be kind to weekday drops and considering that TLM's main market is Europe which tends to be more stable and loyal, it's going to have a smaller drop next week when Japan is added. So in 30s range.

I get that it's looks disappointing compared to movies that open with 200M OS and go down to 42M weekend in their 5th-6th week but the bigger picture here is that solid market can tide a movie over and that's what's happening with TLM thanks to Europe.
