So I found this pretty disappointing. Not really a whole lot to it beyond what the trailers indicated. Evidently the only reason Meledandri went out to get Renner and White for this was to give the thin storyline some pedigree, but it's largely just as shallow and "gag"-driven as most everything Illumination has put out.

 

Perhaps a studio more interested in actual storytelling might've given more focus to Dax's crush motivation, would've at least made it seem less like a Nemo retread than the bland father/son neuroses angle.

I am totally emotionally invested in the movie! Yes, the movie is generic and formulaic but is fun and wildly entertaining! Now I can understand why the A cinemascore.
