Weekend Thread (5/17-19/2024) | WEEKEND ESTIMATES: $35M for IF, $12M for Strangers, $2.85M for Back to Black, $26M for Apes

The Amy Winehouse biopic being totally rejected could be seen coming from miles away. The Whitney movie flopping made it evident no one was here for biopics about artists defined more by their declines to the point of premature death than their work (it's up to Michael next year to try and buck that trend).

Her downfall was depressing enough to watch while it happened (made even worse by the fact her demons were mostly not taken seriously until it was too late), there definitely wasn't an audience (outside of I guess the UK) willing to endure it all over again so soon.

One day we'll stop caring about cinemascore

Not as long as we keep caring about the duration of film festival standing ovations

You mean weekend number right? There's no way it's doing 25 million on a second Friday when It only opened to 55

It's 58.5M, B. 🙄😁

Don’t want to derail the thread, but last night for a family of 4 we spent $70 for the tickets and $70 for 3 hot dogs, chickens tenders, 2 regular sodas and 2 bud lights. I get we don’t HAVE to buy food there but wow, was not expecting to pay $140 for a theater visit.

Something needs to change. I’m talking about overall inflation not just prices in theaters. It’s ridiculous.

I am from a different side of the world and ticket prices here are still way cheaper than in N. America, but the effect of higher ticket prices and food costs is more noticeable than ever. I watched THE FALL GUY alone and KINGDOM OF THE PLANET OF THE APES with just ten other people. What I do now is I eat a heavy meal before I go to the movies. So basically, if I find a schedule at 3:00 PM, I'd eat my lunch at 2:00 PM. 😅

Pretty much our plan going forward. Just eat something beforehand. It’s tough to explain to kids why we can’t get soda/snacks etc going forward but it’s the world we live in at the moment. Same with sports events.

36.3% drop from last Friday.

It’s weird. It’s having extremely good holds but still feels like it could miss 200m. Hoping the official start to summer can help its legs even more.

Is outside food allowed? What I do is I just buy soda from the grocery (way cheaper) and bring it to the cinema. 😁

I think it'll end at around 198M-199M, which would be a bummer. WB should do a rerelease before pulling it out from theaters.
