I guess Returns dealing with Dead Man’s Chest?

Man of steel and which other? 👀

Superman Returns was completely, entirely overwhelmed by Dead Mans Chest. It was pathetic. Someone should have, and may have, been fired over that.

No Pirates 2 and SR likely finished right around WAR OF THE WORLDS gross and gets an easy green light for #2 in 2009.

Yep Superman Returns 2 with Bryan Singer back as director and Kevin Spacey as Lex Luthor. They could have had Arnie Hammer play Bruce Wayne/Batman since he was going to for George Miller's Justice League. The mind reels at what could have been.

Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian. Should have been released on December 2008

Agree. Narnia is the definition of a perfect Christmas family movie.
Even worse decision if you look at the lack of strong tentpoles that December (Marley&Me won the Holidays with 143M DOM)

I dunno what would have been better, but Detective Pikachu's 3 week distance from Avengers Endgame was apparently not enough.

Detective Pikachu honestly came out in the worst summer possible. No matter where you put it, it was gonna get crushed by Endgame, by Toy Story, by Spider-Man, by Lion King. Any other summer prior, it could have comfortably got to around Lego Movie numbers IMO

Pokemon was huge as a brand at the time with the Pokemon-Go! game going viral. Can't believe even a film like "Sonic" which was not that big and got similar reception by the public (according to IMDB), got much bigger at the box-office. Probably a September release would've helped it get some good legs, as Fall 2019 didn't get too much all-audiences competition.

But not in  a good way, given my low opinion of Superman Returns.

And Superman Returns opening weekend already showed it was going to underperfrom at the box office Evenif Pirates 2 had oepned later SR would still had been a major box office disppointemnt.

SR was a misfire, a lot of bad decsiions were made by Singer. All the revisionism isn the world will not change that.

Maybe film quality had something to do with that.

Hellboy 2 would’ve done so much better if it wasn’t released a week before the biggest movie of that year (2008).
Honestly if it came out around December of 2008, it would’ve done better. The holidays really needed a blockbuster and I think Hellboy would’ve been the perfect blockbuster to come out during that time

Bryan Singer legit. watched The Notebook in late July, 2004 and pitched WB on a Superman version of the story the following week. He even cast James Marsden in the exact same role. He then gave the film a dark, gloomy, retro vibe and opted for minimal action outside of one stunning sequence. Absolutely no idea what he is thinking. He made a borderline unmarketable movie.  It is a very solid example of why "studio interference" is not always bad. That movie needed a Bruckheimer-type of presence to bring the crowd pleaser into it.

Remarkable given how close they were to making would-have-been megasmash by Brett Ratner/McG with Josh Hartnett, Anthony Hopkins, and Robert Downey Jr starring film based on JJ Abrams epic "Independence Day meets Spider-man' style Superman origin script. That movie would have made a fortune on its planned Christmas 2004 release.
