Spirited Away is full of symbols and metaphors. IMO No-Face represents human emotions and desires, especially from the people around him. He assumes the attributes of others. Because he's around Chihiro so much, he acts as Chihiro's shadow. He was lonely at first, then affected by the people in the bath house, he became greedy and corrupted, hoping to be accepted and noticed. This shows what could have happened to Chihiro if she let greed get to her head. He changed again eventually, affected by what happened to Chihiro in the end. Or at least that's how I remember it. I haven't seen this in a long time.

I agree this is a sensible and impressive interpretation actually. But I think I just can't relate to something so surrealistic. That's why I like Pixar films more. But if other people can relate to it, then that's great cuz it means the movie achieves it's purpose.  ;)

And as far as millions Frozen lags behind Spirited away if to consider at the time of the 10th week?

P.S. Hello everybody, excuse me for my question, but I really need answer for it. Please help me!

As discussed extremely intensely for the whole of last week, the $164.4M Japan total and the $790.3M total of last week were both underestimated. This is confirmed by this week's update for the OS total: $805,800,000

Iron Man 3 will be gone by next Sunday the latest.

BOM updates new total:

Total Lifetime GrossesDomestic: $400,479,972 33.2%+ Foreign: $805,800,000 66.8%= Worldwide: $1,206,279,972

adding 15,6M$  - 2,6M$ understimating last week = 13M$!

Now Frozen ranks #6 also overseas.

see table below. SA had summer for the first seven weeks and FR had just 3 busy weeks of it first 9. Lets compare week 8 SA and week 10 FR going forward and you can see they are neck and neck as they battle it out post summer SA/ post GW FR and now have a level playing field. Edited by T E Lawrence

OK, I must admit that each new milestone Frozen apporached (and eventually achieved) was mind-bending, but if it surpasses Harry Potter 7 - Part 2 in worldwide gross, I might actually blow my head off.

Potter fanbase should be very afraid as a Winter storm is approaching for the 5th biggest movie ever. At this rate 300M isn't a stretch or maybe even...350M.  :o

  Path to 300+

This projection is with 10% average drops which has yet to materialize in the run.

Spirited Away start comparing to Fozen at week three due to summer advantage.  This comprison is for the long leg battle. SA numbers have been converted to current exchange rate.

With the way Frozen has performed I see it keeping pace with SA and I'm calling it a lock, I just don't see it fading hard with the post GW hold.

Well, first of all, in SA, No-Face does the most random unexlplained things in the movie. I don't even understand what purpose they serve and I find his whole character quite unnecessary.

Also, in the Wind Rises, maybe this is just because of the subtitles (I'm not sure whether they were accurate or not), sometimes I couldn't understand whether he was in Germany or Japan. The film jumped from one scene to another without always explaining what happened during the time in between. Again this might have been due to the subtitles.

I agree that they are good films but I guess I'm so used to the American way of storytelling that I find them very strange at times.

I didn't really think No Face was random, but he did act with impulses that weren't human. It can be a bit confusing, but one thing that Miyazaki doesn't do is dumb down the characters to explain things. In their world No Face is a known: they have some implicit understanding of him so other than providing some really basic information to Chihiro, they don't go into a whole lot of detail. Like her, we're left to infer a lot about him.

For another example, look at Totoro. As the film is presented, Totoro is this old, known nature spirit creature and you get a real sense that everyone knows and has heard about it. It turns out that, nope, Miyazaki created Totoro completely for the film. He just has a way of making that seem natural.

Regarding TWR, I never felt lost for where things were, but would agree that it's a bit more episodic than his previous films so doesn't quite have the same flow.

why did do only 10m in US. It doesnt even look dubbed.

Timing and content. For the first, it hit right after computer animation took off in a big way, after Monster's Inc and Shrek and Ice Age. Even if it was something "new" it wasn't the hot new thing. Content wise, it is very Japanese, and that's not an easy sell with the general pubic.

Even so, it did quite a bit better than Princess Mononoke did a few years before.
