TalismanRing
I'm surprised there isn't anything really huge in China though, I always assumed there would be something big built recently. I think multi-plexes work best when there's a lot of variety in product (see NYC's crazy busy Empire 25). The way China floods screens with one or two movies then drops them quickly kind of works against that.

chimpo
Rsyu we had a talk during summer about local movies being bunched up closely to each other and if that will work in Box Office in their favour. In SK it worked because Roaring Currents was huge, Pirates did well and even that first movie ( which title I can't remember ) did pretty well ). Now we had a similar situation in Poland where three big local movies openned in 4 weeks and we didn't know if that won't end up bad for some of them. Looks like 2 of them will be huge blockbusters and one will be a hit. Not to mention that more people started going to cinemas because media talked a lot about those movies. Maybe cinema owners and distributors should work on doing similar actions during each quater to boost the Box Office? If it works why not repeat it? Maybe cinema owners and distributors should work on doing similar actions during each quater to boost the Box Office? If it works why not repeat it? I agree to an extent, there was a synergy effect from having those big movies grouped together as it got more people to go to the theatres and, as you mention, increased the media attention on those movies. It's a positive feedback loop. I'd also mention the runs of frozen and miss granny earlier in the year as another example of that point. Having too much congestion outside of the busy seasons of summer and winter though, like 4 huge local hits being released every week over the course of a month, isn't all that good for the box office either. The reason it worked in the summer is because the 'box office pie' so to speak was big enough to accommodate all those films. Even then, with the a larger potential audience, you had films such as Guardians of the galaxy that suffered and fail in a big way to live up to it's potential (1.3 million admissions is just too poor for a marvel film released during the summer!) Also, I'm somewhat sceptical that having films grouped together was part of a larger agreement between the studios, it was simply the only way to fit their respective movies with most potential into the busiest film going period of the year, and they just tried to put the best face they could on it that maximized their chance to profit. If a similar strategy was adopted during months with slow box office business, they could just as easily ending up harming each other's as they fight for limited audiences. So maybe not the same thing but something on a smaller scale maybe, say 2 big films released every 2-3 weeks for example, rivalling each other at the top of the box office could help the overall state of the box office. We can actually see this theory put to the test during November, with Interstellar, Mockingjay and fury as well as 3 highly anticipated local hits going head to head over 3 weeks. About the situation in Poland, I wonder if those movies you mention was released during a busy or slow movie going period?
Rsyu
So we already know that Interstellar will be a success in this market. Indeed! We have our share of nolanites CGV could profit hugely from interstellar as they have a monopoly on IMAX screens in Korea. Potential stumbling blocks are the local films Fashion King (released the same day) and Cart (One week later).
chimpo
About the situation in Poland, I wonder if those movies you mention was released during a busy or slow movie going period? I would say that it's slow movie going period. Good movie period is from November to end of March. The rest is dependable on weather. Spring and Summer are rather weak periods here.
