The maze runner rebounded very well and there's a good chance that it hits $20 million now. With just under 3 months of the year remaining, foreign movies needs just 4 million more admissions to beat 2013 with the gross already having been surpassed. Add to that, the top 10 for 2014 already looks to have trumped 2013's top 10 list: 01. 9,001,309 Iron Man 3 02. 5,237,525 World War Z 03. 3,194,693 Gravity 04. 3,039,889 Thor: The Dark World 05. 3,004,649 Red: The legend 06. 2,856,065 About time 07. 2,718,227 Now you see me 08. 2,707,484 Les miserables 09. 2,539,115 Pacific Rim 10. 2,262,758 The Conjuring The similarities between 2013 and 2014 is the Korean people's love for musical films (Frozen & Les miserables), small budget films becoming surprising hits (about time & Begin again), Sci-fi genre is very much alive (Gravity(?), WWZ, Edge of tomorrow, Dawn of the planet of the apes) and faith in Marvel products. The conjuring reaching the top 10 of the year was a real surprise though. A quick look at the rest of the year shows which films have the best chance to break in the top 10 for the year. Anticipation ratings (source: Naver). Red for thumbs up, blue for thumbs down. 01. 4170 160 The Hobbit: The battle of the five armies: 02. 3943 144 The Hunger games: Mockingjay pt.1: 03. 3284 147 Interstellar: 04. 2439 221 Dracular untold 05. 2034 73 Kill your darling Among the above movies, The hobbit and hunger games have to reach beyond their respective fan bases and capture the hearts of the general public, something that they have failed to do so far in previous films. Interstellar will hoping for an inception-esque run in Korea although the latter had the advantage of being released during the summer. The Nolan brand is a much bigger draw than it was back then so I'm cautiously optimistic for this film. A run like EoT woudn't be too bad either. IPTV has become a major revenue source in Korea, especially over the past couple of years, and more and more studios are looking to exploit it. It's quite a turnaround considering how rampant piracy is here. $10 million is a great win for frozen though, equivalent to approximately 1.3million admissions in the theatres.
