CGV went from 8k to 15k by 13:20. Meaning it's outpacing last monday in walkups. Last monday it managed to get 20k by 13:20 and made another 13k after that for a 33k finish. I am quite confident it will match the 20k by 15:20 figuer. So it shoudn't decrease in the CGV chain this week. However currently it is looking like it will need a higher CGV finish to get the same total because of a lower CGV ratio.

PS sunday at midnight where 33.2k vs 43.2k last week, so down 10k or 23.1% vs last week. PS should be a good indication for the drop we are looking at this weekend. Though walk ups will probably make up a bit for that. Then again walk ups can be offset by a lower CGV ratio. To keep PS pase (%wise) with last week we should get to 45.7k by the end of the day, should be doable, hopefully it can gain a bit.

Wow this was scarily accurate, should I lock in a 5% drop next weekend right now?

Are schools finally letting out this week - and is it a national date or do different cities and schools have different vacation dates?

Each school has different vacation dates. I think for most schools, summer vacation starts around July 20th and ends around August 20th, with middle/high schools having shorter breaks than elementary schools.

Based on the walkups I'm thinking 66-69k for Elemental (-12-16% LW) and 126-133k for MI7 (-70-72% Sun). Elemental's walkups are already back to nearly 90% of last week's.

Edit: 19:00 and I'm thinking closer to ~60k for Elemental (-24%), it's dropped harder in the evening probably because I think MI7 proportionally took more of its evening shows, still a good drop when you remember last Monday did not have MI7. MI7 itself is still tracking for ~130k.

Weekdays should hold better cause it might be hard to jumps as high on friday and defintly on saturday this weekend. I will try to see if I can find PS for previous Conan movie because a 300-500k movies opening shoudn't do to much. Though conan will capture some of Elemental audience even if it isn't big.

https://koreajoongangdaily.joins.com/2023/07/17/business/industry/CJ-CGV-Lotte-Cinema-Megabox/20230717165313345.html

Interesting article about the rising ticket prices in SK turning away moviegoers, CGV having to sell its own stock to raise capital, and a general absence of mid-budget/mid-tier movies (1m+ tickets sold). Sounds very similar to the situation domestic as well, however the numbers are much worse when compared with 2019.

Quote

Around 21 million movie tickets were sold in the first six months of this year, according to the Korean Film Council (Kofic) statistics. The figure rose above 20 million for the first half of 2020 but is only 38 percent of its performance in 2019, when nearly 57 million tickets were sold between January and June.

With 2024 looking like a down year for Hollywood because of the strikes I wonder if Korean audiences will turn even more to local movies and other asian imports like China and Japan have recently post-covid.

To provide some context, CJ CGV got screwed over financially because they invested in a Turkish cinema operator, Mars Entertainment Group in 2016. Mars itself is doing well, but CGV signed an agreement in which they agreed to deliver a guaranteed minimum return to financial investors in terms of Korean Won. Unfortunately, due to the decrease in the value of the Turkish lira, CJ CGV had to take a lot of debt to fulfill these obligations. These issues were only exacerbated by COVID.

Total Presales for the upcoming days as of Monday 00:00

Elemental - 31,237 (-5.3% LW)

MI7 - 92,994

Barbie (T-2) - 25,068

Detective Conan (T-3) - 49,217

Smugglers (T-9) - 40,332

Ransomed (T-16) - 12,245

Barbie + Conan combine for 74k presales which is less than half of MI7's 155k T-3 checkpoint. I don't think this will be a huge threat for Elemental and MI7's holds next week, it will still have an effect of course but not as bad as we might have feared.

Total Presales for the upcoming days as of Tuesday 00:00

Elemental - 43,026 (+1.2% LW)

MI7 - 103,218 (-47.7% LW)

Barbie (T-1) - 38,877

Detective Conan (T-2) - 67,609

Smugglers (T-8) - 54,039

Ransomed (T-15) - 10,386

Great sign for Elemental's weekend hold, the presales will likely be close to flat going into Friday. Conan + Barbie combine for about 75% of MI7's T-2 and 54% of its T-1. That, along with MI7 itself still being around will contribute to walkups maybe being a little bit weaker than last week since there will have to be a lot of showings cut to accommodate everything, but I think MI7 will take most of the damage.

Another thing to consider is that some of these presales could also be booked as far back as next week's weekdays since schools are off so it might not indicate a flat weekend, right now I would still lean on the side of a smallish drop.

Tuesday's are normally quite a bit stronger than Monday for presales, idk why, though the walkups can be weaker. 28% is very good though, in my opinion last Tuesday was probably Elemental's weakest day of its entire run, it shouldn't have dropped from Monday since that was the one day where MI7 wasn't playing at all. I'd expect a small increase tomorrow in line with the other Tuesday's of its run.
