China Box Office Thread | Deadpool & Wolverine- July 26

Where did you get that number? According to Entgroup, FF6 midnight is 2.21M from 1834 theaters. There are still 1200+ theaters missing.

It reports 2.3M from 2200. It probably went up to 2.4M when all reported.

Remember, not every theater does midnight.

Why can't Hollywood globally "day and date" their movies like MATRIX RELOADED?

Solve the cam-piracy problem.

A minor point, but the problem with FF6 wasn't cam piracy. I've argued before that cam piracy doesn't make a big difference at the Chinese box office and I still believe that. The problem with FF6 was that a high-quality HD version leaked from Russia a few weeks ago and Chinese-subtitled copies were circulating almost immediately. If it were just cam copies I don't think there'd be an issue.

As for the day-and-date issue, Hollywood doesn't control release dates in China, the government does. FF6 lost one release date (the weekend of June 8th) to protect the local film Switch, and it lost a second release date (June 20th) because that ended up going to Man of Steel instead, which was almost definitely connected to the Legendary-China Film Group deal announced at the end of May. (CFG is a state-owned company that has a legal monopoly on film imports in China and is officially responsible for setting their release dates, though the final call is up to the Film Bureau.) Either one of those dates would've been much better than July 26. It's not like Universal asked for FF6 to be released in China two months after the rest of the world. Note The Matrix Reloaded also opened in China in late July, or about two months after its release in the U.S. and most other markets--only Revolutions managed to get a day-and-date release.
