PHILIPPINES BOX OFFICE thread

Recommended Posts

Have either of you seen My Kontrabida Girl? Any good?

Nope. I don't like the stars although the director is good (Endo, Zombadings and My Big Love) and the reviews I've read are negative so I didn't bother at all.

BOM has taken down last week's box office index, I hope they update it soon with the correct THG earning

The trailer looked decent at the start, but lost interest towards the end. Can either of you suggest some recent romcoms that have been released? My parents will be there in May for my cousin's wedding and I want them to bring back some movies.

The ones that I liked recently are Won't Last a Day Without You and Wedding Tayo, Wedding Hindi. UnOfficially Yours is ok but it might be a little racy for your parents

Where is American Reunion? Why isn't Universal giving that movie a WW push? And why is fucking Portugal receive it this weekend? This makes no sense Universal! We have a big movie every weekend here. American Reunion/Titanic, Mirror Mirror/Project X/Gone, Battleship/The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, The Avengers/The Pirates/The Lucky One/The Raven. Sounds like a fun April to me here  The country where every single movie fails. That awkard moment where I have no idea what the hell are distributors thinking... (we won't have The Three Stooges until July but seriously? I really don't care :P ). Edited by CJohn

^ It's marketed here as American Pie: The Reunion, it's slated for a May 2 release. Well they share the same distributor with Battleship and that movie is getting a lot of marketing push here so I guess that's why American Reunion will be shown later so they can focus on one movie only.Pirates is scheduled for May 16

I think here they just didn't care (btw here is also called American Pie: The Reunion). But seriously, your release shedule would make much more sense in Portugal and the portuguese shedule in the Philippines. We had Machine Gun Preacher and Anonymous last year, c'mon... and they both flopped btw.

The Five Year Engagement is set for a June 27 release :(Anonymous was originally for March but got moved, it's just a limited release (2-3 screens) and I'm sure it would flop here as well and maybe BOM won't have numbers for it like My Week with Marilyn. Machine Gun Preacher was originally set last year but it never materialized. Well their distributor don't market their movies well (the movies on the bottom of the list of the yearly box office are all from them haha) but they got Twilight and now The Hunger Games so they're lucky :D

We have a distributor exactly like that (that actually distributed MGP), but they now have The Hunger Games and got The Iron Lady and Immortals. After those all they have are epic flops.

By the way here our distributors:Warner Bros. Philippines (they also distribute 20th Century Fox movies)Solar UIP (Universal, Paramount, Dreamworks Animation)Columbia (Sony and Disney/Dreamworks)Pioneer & Viva International (Lionsgate, Relativity, Summit, foreign flicks (usually Asian horror movies) and other smaller studios

Our distributors:The Big One:Zon Lusomundo (Universal, Paramount, Disney, Dreamworks, Indies (movies from all the smaller studious, outside of the big 6), includes Twilight, The Host and The Expendables)(Small curiosity: The Hobbit will be Disney and Skyfall will be Zon Indie here, and they almost robbed Tintin from Sony here)The other 3 that are also big:Columbia Tristar Warner (Warner Bros, Sony)Big Pictures 2 Films (Fox)Pris Audiovisuais (Indies (movies from all the smaller studious, outside of the big 6), The Hunger Games distributor)Others:PepperView Entertainment (Indies (movies from all the smaller studious, outside of the big 6))Clap Movies (Movies like Cosmopolis, Melancholia and other unknow stuff in America)

^ Wow that Zon Lusomondo is indeed big, three major studios! How about your local Portuguese movies, do you have a lot of local movies released there? Here there are 4 major local studios but the biggest one is Star Cinema which usually has the top local movie every single year since the 2000s (usually RomCom). And we usually have one or two local movies released per month. Romance is the biggest genre here followed by horror and comedy. Well we have a lot of independent movies (digital films) though but they are either art house flicks (film festivals bound) or soft core porn  Our major cinema houses are inside malls, we used to have a lot of standalone theaters/multiplexes but they died over time (there are still some that exists but you seriously don't want to go there anymore since a lot of nasty stuff happens there :o

We also have major cinemas inside shopping centers. The standalone cinemas are dead here too. Last year, all local movies flopped big time (the biggest sold 20000 tickets in total, terrible!), like they usually do. From time to time we still have one or 2 hits, but overall we hate our own movies :( Which is a shame because some portuguese movies are really good. The next local movie will be released on April 19. If they market it well, it has a chance of becoming a solid midlevel hit. It is a romantic drama. We have one or 2 local movies released every month. They are usually released by Zon  with the exception of this next release on April, the 1st local movie released by Columbia Tristar Warner.

At least The Muppets beat Breaking Wind but still so sad :(

I think John Carter can crawl to 2 million but definitely won't be beating Underworld:Awakening.

Let's see how soon can The Hunger Games catch up with UnOfficially Yours, they need a strong second week but Wrath of the Titans has IMAX and 3D so it will likely earn more

Our local movie industry was actually quite strong before and we used to produce like 100 films a year but it dwindled over time as ticket prices goes up and piracy became rampant. Plus lack of quality material. Our mainstream movies ranges from awful to above average, usually popcorn flicks with a happy ending. But once in a while a brilliant film comes along and there are lot of good independent movies but they always have a hard time crossing over to commercial theaters. But our production aspect is really poor mainly because post production are most of the time not done yet even if the movie is opening just a couple of days away. How are your ticket prices there? Here the price ranges from 100-200 pesos (roughly $2-$5) for 2D flicks and 250-300 pesos ($5-$7) for 3D and 400-500 pesos ($8-$12) for IMAX Edited by forg
