Greatest movie ever about people becoming aroused by car crashes.

In all seriousness, though, it's an excellent and very interesting and rewarding piece of work. While the NC-17 rating and the premise make the film sound somewhat extreme and provocative, it's actually a wonderfully quiet (I think the characters whisper more than they speak out loud) character drama about people who've become so unable to conventionally experience pleasure (or any intense and powerful feeling, really) that they resort to desperate means to do so. It's a ballsy subject, but the film never threatens to go off the rails thanks to Cronenberg's assured direction, the hypnotic cinematography drenched in cold, steely, blue-and-grey hues, the no less magnetic score by Howard Shore and the committed performances, in particular by Elias Koteas who is revelatory even if you've seen him in numerous films before.

As a teenager watched this movie for the "Plot". Very intense movie and decent performance form the cast what is basically a perverted subject. The disappointing aspect was the crash scenes. It just didn't convey the tension and emotions felt by the characters during and after the crashes. All I could see were cold-blooded bodies lying there emotionless.
