“MINIONS” GROSSES P189-M IN 5 DAYS, BIGGEST EVER ANIMATION OPENING IN PH
via press release

Minions_09.jpg

MANILA, July 13, 2015 – On a mission to steal the Queen's crown, the Minions handily snatched the box-office crown as well! Universal Pictures' “Minions” now holds the record of the All-time Biggest Opening Weekend for an Animation Title after grossing a spectacular P189-million in five days (July 8 to 12). Ironically, “Minions” took the crown from its predecessor, 2013's “Despicable Me 2” (P125.7-M).

This was announced today by a spokesman of United International Pictures (UIP) which distributed the film through Columbia Pictures.

The domination began Wednesday July 8 when the spinoff to “Despicable Me” debuted with P22.8-M, breaking the record set by 2011's “Rio” for the Biggest Opening Day Ever for an animated feature.

What followed is a succession of daily demolished records: Biggest Thursday (P22.9-M), Biggest Friday (P32-M), Biggest Saturday (P58.9-M) and Biggest Sunday (P52.2-M).
Top-notch entertainment value, excellent brand familiarity and immense likability of lead characters Kevin, Bob and Stuart all contributed to the success of “Minions.” UIP also spearheaded a monumental marketing campaign, even flying in the “characters” for TV and mall appearances. The film's in-store tie-up with McDonald's likewise created a viral buzz that overlapped from social media to legitimate news involving the much-coveted Minions toys.

Trinoma topped the list of highest-grossing cinemas with P6.9-M, followed by SM North EDSA (P6.7-M) and SM Megamall (P6.4-M).

Fourth to tenth rankings are claimed by SM Mall of Asia (P6-M), Glorietta 4 (P4-M), Greenbelt 3 (P3.7-M), Alabang Town Center (P3.7-M), SM Cebu (P3.5-M), SM Dasmarinas (P3.2-M) and Eastwood (P3-M).

Also reporting impressive sales are Market! Market! (P2.9-M), Robinsons Magnolia (P2.8-M), Bonifacio High Street (P2.8-M), Power Plant (P2.8-M), SM Southmall (P2.8-M), Fairview Terraces (P2.7-M), SM Baguio (P2.7-M), Shang Cineplex (P2.6-M), SM Marikina (P2.6-M), Ayala Cebu (P2.6-M) and Greenhills Promenande (P2.6-M).

Cinemas that reached the P2.5-M mark are SM San Lazaro, SM Fairview, SM Aura and SM Taguig.

In the U.S., “Minions” ruled the weekend box office, racking up a massive $115.2 million, for the second biggest animated film opening in history.

“With anything that opens to over $100 million, you breach all demographics,” said Jeff Bock, an analyst with Exhibitor Relations. “The Minions are the stars of the ‘Despicable Me’ franchise…kids love them, teens love them, and adults love them.”

In recent months, there’s been a lot of celebrating taking place on the Universal lot. The studio is the leader in market share thanks to hits like “Pitch Perfect 2″ and “Fifty Shades of Grey,” and has two films that have crossed $1 billion at the global box office with “Furious 7″ and “Jurassic World.”

The story of Universal Pictures and Illumination Entertainment’s “Minions” begins at the dawn of time. Starting as single-celled yellow organisms, Minions evolve through the ages, perpetually serving the most despicable of masters. Continuously unsuccessful at keeping these masters—from T. rex to Napoleon—the Minions find themselves without someone to serve and fall into a deep depression.

But one Minion named Kevin has a plan, and he—alongside teenage rebel Stuart and lovable little Bob—ventures out into the world to find a new evil boss for his brethren to follow.

The trio embarks upon a thrilling journey that ultimately leads them to their next potential master, Scarlet Overkill (Academy Award® winner Sandra Bullock), the world’s first-ever female super-villain. They travel from frigid Antarctica to 1960s New York City, ending in mod London, where they must face their biggest challenge to date: saving all of Minionkind...from annihilation.

Now playing across the Philippines, “Minions” is distributed by United International Pictures through Columbia Pictures.

“INSIDE OUT” OPENS AT NO. 1 WITH P97.17-M IN 5 DAYS
via press rekease

MANILA, Aug. 24, 2015 – Filipino audiences met the little voices inside their heads and apparently loved the experience, as Disney-Pixar's “Inside Out” shot to the top of the box-office with a record-breaking P97.17 million gross in five days (Aug. 19 to 23). This was announced today by Walt Disney Studios Philippines which distributed the film through Columbia Pictures.

A comedy adventure featuring a team of Emotions who help guide an 11-year-old girl through an unsettling change in her life, “Inside Out” now holds the record for the Biggest Walt Disney/Pixar opening weekend of all-time, beating last year's “Big Hero 6” (P69.99-M) and 3rd biggest animation opening weekend of all-time, bumping off “How to Train Your Dragon 2's” P84.9-M.

The success of “Inside Out” in the Philippines is significant and impressive as the film had the handicap of opening here two months after its US release. Moviegoers in Manila have been accustomed to watching their films ahead of everyone else in the world, but the delay of “Inside Out” proved to be a wise move.
“Inside Out” also benefitted from the Manila press tour of director Pete Docter and co-director Ronnie del Carmen two weeks ago which generated buzz and goodwill, and allowed Filipinos to celebrate its hometown hero in Cavite-born Del Carmen.

The film opened in the U.S. June 19 with a monumental $92-million haul, the biggest debut ever for an original film. On its third week of release, “Inside Out” catapulted to the number one spot of the US domestic box-office. Its cumulative worldwide gross now stands at $689.9-million and still growing.
In the Philippines, the three biggest-grossing cinemas are SM North EDSA (P4.16-M), Trinoma (P4.03-M) and SM Megamall (P3.95-M).

They're followed by Power Plant (P3.31-M), SM Mall of Asia (P3.18-M), Eastwood (P2.72-M), Glorietta 4 (P2.58-M), Greenhills Promenade (P2.37-M), Alabang Town Center (P2.159-M) and Robinsons Magnolia (P2.155-M).

Also posting high receipts are Greenbelt 3 (P1.79-M), SM Aura (P1.77-M), Shang Cineplex (P1.74-M), Fisher Mall (P1.65-M), SM Cebu (P1.60-M), Ayala Cebu (P1.42-M), SM Fairview (P1.35-M), Bonifacio High Street (P1.319-M), SM Marikina (P1.317-M) and SM Southmall (P1.30M).

Beside the abovementioned records, “Inside Out” also smashed the following milestones.

  • Biggest Walt Disney/Pixar animation Thursday of all-time (P10.64-M), beating “Big Hero 6” (P8.4-M)
  • Biggest Walt Disney/Pixar animation Friday of all-time (P27-M), beating “Up” (P13-M)
  • Biggest Walt Disney/Pixar Single Day (Friday, P27-M), beating “Big Hero 6” (P25.4-M

)

From an adventurous balloon ride above the clouds to a monster-filled metropolis, Academy Award®-winning director Pete Docter (“Monsters, Inc.,” “Up”) has taken audiences to unique and imaginative places. In Disney•Pixar’s original movie “ Inside Out,” he will take us to the most extraordinary location of all—inside the mind.

Growing up can be a bumpy road, and it's no exception for Riley, who is uprooted from her Midwest life when her father starts a new job in San Francisco. Like all of us, Riley is guided by her emotions – Joy (Amy Poehler), Fear (Bill Hader), Anger (Lewis Black), Disgust (Mindy Kaling) and Sadness (Phyllis Smith). The emotions live in Headquarters, the control center inside Riley’s mind, where they help advise her through everyday life. As Riley and her emotions struggle to adjust to a new life in San Francisco, turmoil ensues in Headquarters. Although Joy, Riley's main and most important emotion, tries to keep things positive, the emotions conflict on how best to navigate a new city, house and school.

Still playing to record crowds across the Philippines, “Inside Out” is distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures International through Columbia Pictures.
