  1. WB publicists scrambling to locate all the crew members of color to sign a statement that DWD was the least racist, most inclusive set they've ever worked on...
  2. After seeing this, it's kind of crazy that Wilde went on and on about the movie showcasing female pleasure... Overall, it looked nice and Florence was great, Harry was fine, the script was just rough.
  3. The Amsterdam floppage is already a distant memory... Or, maybe not?
  4. Would love to see how the crowd who blames all the negative DWD headlines on "misogyny" explains away Pugh's continued refusal to deny the feud rumors, and that she's managed to quiet quit the PR tour without (seemingly) running afoul of WB. You know, the same studio that's releasing Dune 2, so she probably wants to stay in their good graces. If WB were really upset with Florence for how she's handled DWD promotion, IMO you'd be getting way more stories from "industry sources" about how Pugh is shirking her duties as the star of the movie and being a bit of a diva. If they insisted on her being available to promote DWD, they'd have made a few calls to Budapest and schedules would've been rearranged. Yet, Pugh has done the bare minimum here and WB seems to have given their tacit approval. They must feel the alternative (Pugh showing up everywhere and being very candid about her experience on the film or the "Miss Flo" video) is far worse...
  5. A big narrative of Bros is that all the actors were already out. Even if they had gotten Matt Bomer or the second Bridgerton guy instead, Billy Eichner's humor just isn't for everyone. Also, the movie's actual love interest Luke Macfarlane is best known for Hallmark movies. Even with Hallmark being more inclusive now and driving off the bigots to a splinter channel, their content is still extremely tame. So you in Bros, you have a raunchy comedy where the star is probably maxing out his fanbase and the other lead's fans are accustomed to watching G-rated romances on basic cable. Some theaters will do great and others are going to be absolute deserts.
  6. "Inspired by Jordan Peterson" wasn't enough direction or character development, then? LOL 74 percent verified audience score with under 50 reviews, not great.
  7. Well, then, if that's Olivia's story, good job playing along at first with the "Miss Flo" video...
  8. Angela Bassett has at least one big dramatic scene in Wakanda Forever, here's hoping...
  9. Maybe, though I've seen people who've viewed The Fabelmans say Williams is clearly supporting and are surprised by this news. AMPAS can always go their own way despite the studio campaign, Lakeith wasn't that long ago. But if the placement sticks, I guess Foy or Buckley is the frontrunner? It's also good news for Stephanie Hsu.
  10. Let's see if this lasts, I remember when Christoph Waltz was going to go lead for Django Unchained.
  11. Film Twitter strenuously objects to being called "nobody", LOL. It would be wild if Spielberg makes his Most Personal Movie Ever and loses to a summer blockbuster, of all things. As much as a Top Gun movie would be a departure from recent Oscar trends, the first Best Picture winner was Wings...
  12. They have all those new voters, maybe they won't feel as slighted? I could see them just not going for TGM in major categories even if Tom hadn't dissed them so publicly, it is a summer action movie. I think Paramount cares about awards more than Cruise, but the Globes are really not essential to TGM doing well on Oscar morning.
  13. A Tuesday... For a long time, the Oscars used to be on Mondays before they moved the day. I guess this will liven up the week?
  14. Let's be real, Whitney's singing voice is going to be the best thing about this movie by far. For a biopic about someone known for their amazing singing voice, fans don't want to hear some actor just trying their best. Either the actor has to be a close enough mimic to pass as the real thing (at least in spots) or they better practice their lip syncing. If a singer is better known for their songwriting or personality than technical vocals, then the general public is more likely to accept the actor doing their own singing. A Johnny Cash biopic? They'll let the actor do all the singing. A Freddie Mercury movie? Not so much. Judy kind of skirted around that by sticking to a timeframe where the reaI artist's voice had faded from her glory days. And even then, the hardcore fans might grumble, so you really can't please everyone.
  15. It's entirely possible for there to be multiple groups upset about The Woman King for different reasons? IMO it's a mix of: a) African-Americans who have issues with the movie's historical accuracy. There's probably some overlap with the people who wanted to boycott Harriet a few years back, which didn’t stop other, less "online" Black people (and others) from still seeing it. b) The types who often get bothered by movies starring Black people, but this time they've latched onto the "historical inaccuracies" as the reason they're so bothered by TWK in particular, because they're not racist, you know. And probably bots are inflaming the situation on Twitter. Depending where you are on the internet, you may be seeing complaints from Group A or Group B. Given the general bent of r/movies, for example, you can guess which side is leading the negativity there. People bring up Gladiator and Braveheart but they didn’t have to face social media discourse as new movies. Who knows what the outrage would have been? Even so, Twitter/Reddit/etc hate doesn't doom a project to failure.
  16. Ticket to Paradise looks like a throwback to the 1990s-2000s, the critics were not really here for studio romcoms back then. Many big, beloved 2000s hits of that type (The Proposal, 50 First Dates, Miss Congeniality, How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, Maid in Manhattan) are no where close to being fresh on Rotten Tomatoes. The Wedding Planner is 17 percent on RT and TBS is scheduled to show it four times in the next 10 days! If it was too much of a "chick flick" or not "subverting the genre" somehow or wasn't an Oscar hopeful, critics just didn't care for the conventional romcom. Now, today's critics are probably so grateful to see a new Julia Roberts comedy instead of another cinematic universe entry, that their reviews are probably a bit generous. Anyway, 73 percent fresh for a mainstream romcom is pretty good, unless it has some unconventional twist, a score in that range should have good WOM.
  17. With the College Admissions Scandal movie, it was a mix of real and fake. "Rick Singer" was a character in the movie but the parents were fake versions of Lori Loughlin and Felicity Huffman: But with with the Lori Vallow case, the Lifetime movie used her real name. I'm sure they have lawyers who weigh the risks and decide if it's worth doing a real or fake version of the story. And maybe the Tubi standards are lower, I mean, they did release Titanic 666 on the anniversary of the sinking...
  18. What, did Lifetime get outbid? They love a good "Ripped from the Headlines" movie. Will this Depp/Heard Tubi original be better or worse than My Son Hunter?
  19. Margot is playing a faux Clara Bow, a redhead from Brooklyn. She was the original "It" Girl and a headstrong wild child-she even negotiated with Paramount not to have a morals clause in her contract. That was the mid-1920s, not the norm for actresses back then. Eventually, she had a breakdown and spent time in a sanitarium, before retiring from acting at 28. So I see what they are going for with Margot's character in the trailer. The Roaring Twenties are notorious for wild celebrations, add in Hollywood money/glamour and the partying had to be next level.
  20. Tough task to live up to Top Gun history (Take My Breath Away) and her own (Shallow), with the big sweeping movie ballad. The original Top Gun hits you over the head with the Berlin song throughout. They seemingly wanted to avoid that this time, but the scene with "Hold My Hand" ends up feeling tacked on at the end. But it's funny, the beach football scene in Maverick takes a lot of the elements from the infamous beach volleyball scene, down to both being set to a pop rock song. But "Playing with the Boys" isn't even the most memorable Kenny Loggins song from the soundtrack, so maybe "I Ain't Worried" doesn't suffer so much in comparison?
  21. What more can you say about this movie's success at this point? Over $700 million domestic and #1 for Memorial Day and Labor Day weekends-what a glorious box office run! * "I Ain't Worried" is a Top 10 hit (#8 in this week's Hot 100).
  22. Heh, the internet really bullied Leo into very slightly changing his dating habits... She's 27, and a mom, but still a supermodel.
  23. The AMC that's about 20 miles away has this on a screen with 36 seats, which seems about right if you're going to bother with a masterpiece like Unfavorable Odds. My closest AMC put this in a 150ish seat auditorium! How does that even happen, they even have Top Gun: Maverick in a smaller room at this point. We got Prey and Thirteen Lives straight to streaming this summer, but there’s room for Boogievision originals in theaters. Amazing...
