  1. Not the politics thread but the US doesn't have anything close to universal healthcare. I definitely don't agree with repealing ACA, especially without an actual replacement plan. Anyways, different people who dislike ACA dislike it for different reasons. Some are business owners and it costs them money. Some are ignorant sheep who just listen to Fox News talking heads bash it so they do to. Some are people who could already afford insurance, and it ended up raising their costs. However, I'm assuming most of the hate from the GOP wouldn't be there if it wasn't for the fact that Obama was the one to get it made and passed. EDIT: Move this to the CCT/politics please or ignore it.
  2. Plus, most of the GA doesn't know too much about who's the frontrunner to win. At most, they see what's been nominated for a lot of Oscars and go watch those movies.
  3. True, it'll have one weekend to hold well. Good thing for Patriots Day is that there are a few other movies released this weekend theaters will be much more eager to drop. I see theaters dropping every new wide release from this weekend before PD.
  4. I think Patriots Day should have good legs, WoM seems especially strong from people who saw the movie. I could see it pushing over 50-60m DOM.
  5. He needs the SAG before I call it a lock.
  6. Actress is the only real spoiler here. Actor is between Affleck and Washington Supporting Actor is ATJ, Ali or Bridges Supporting Actress is Davis Actress is the only one that might spin non-fiction with Portman. But I think Stone is taking it.
  7. Wall Wall World An aspiring broadway actress and wannabe Wall Street broker cross paths and magic happens!
  8. I honestly don't like this. I don't think the movie would work that well on stage.
  9. Yeah, they may not seem effective to us (as we practically have when every movie is coming out memorized), but the GA isn't as aware. They may learn a date for a big movie they want to see, but overall they find out when movies are coming out when they see it on TV. I think classical marketing campaigns are much more effective than we give credit for.
  10. I believe I remember you not being a fan of the Wizard of Oz (which is one my top 10 alltime movies). Maybe that was Baumer though.
  11. I didn't realize that. Anyways, from what I understood about the numbers the 1000 a week was before the band was popular. I'd assume it'd go much higher when they started pulling crowds and got popular. Especially since I'd figure their popularity likely grew over those 5 years. (They were pulling near 1m views before the tour even, for a new promo video. That's quite a bit for a new band. I figure with another few years his income would have risen dramatically.)
  12. I side with Tele on many things, with the exception of certain movies featuring Dinosaurs, A Snobbish Director with a stick up his ass (but who's films I like quite bit), and certain musicals.
  13. Look, I'm not saying there aren't spoiled people. And despite not coming from a rich family, I'm definitely lucky and blessed compared to how hard some other friends of mine had it. I just always find it demeaning when I hear "millennial entitlement/millennial whinings" or hear my entire generation getting told to grow up and suck it up for a number of things. It's insulting. I'm not an idiot. I realize you don't get everything you want, and life isn't handed to you on a silver platter. I'm also not lazy, I work, do research, taking 18 hours in school (while trying to maintain a 4.0), while trying to be involved and build connections, and take out loans to pay for it all, all in the hopes that maybe I can get accepted into a good graduate school so maybe I can get a well-paying job. Plenty of other people in my generation are similar, or honestly even more dedicated, in their work ethic. I don't think the world owes me shit. So whenever I hear about "millennial entitlement" and such, it groups me and others in with it, and it feels demeaning and insulting. Having to sit and listen to people tell you how sucky and entitled your generation all the time starts to strike a nerve, even if I know it's a generic term and not aimed at individuals.
  14. I don't think you're necessarily supposed to feel bad for him though. He's a prick in the movie, and him being a prick is what leads to him losing Mia. I didn't have a problem with him being a prick. The ending shows character change as well, he gives up his idea of "Chicken on a Stick" for one, and he matures a little bit out of being an entitled asshole. Sebastian is a pretty entitled character in the movie, I get that. But I don't get how that's a problem with the movie? He gets called out in the movie for being an asshole, which his character is at parts. But then again, most people act like one at one point in their life. And just because his character is an asshole in parts doesn't mean there aren't likable or charming aspects about him that work as well. Im not getting the argument on how this works against the movie.
  15. Lol, I fucking hate when people say millennial entitlement. Like an entire generation of people just are oblivious to real world and expect everything to be given to them. Talk about not understanding the generation at all. People my age are cutthroat competitive to get a chance to go into massive amounts of debt for school and work 40+ hour a week unpaid internships in hope that it could lead to a career. Fully recognizing the job market is shit if you don't go into the right one. I also don't get where the entitlement argument of this movie is from. It fully recognizes some of the flat out luck and difficulty it is to actually achieve a dream etc. The theme is about how pursuing goals and relationships, and how temporary aspects of your life shape you permanently. I get that there's backlash because this is the big Oscar frontrunner, and it's cool to hate the frontrunner, but some of these complaints seem either nitpicky or non-existent. Maybe I saw a different movie, idk. Not every movie is going to work for everyone though, I get it. There's popular movies on here that don't work for me.
  16. Id really have to disagree with that. Besides part of the point of the movie is that it's supposed to feel dreamy. Whether you think the ending was realistic or not, the movie wouldn't have worked with a different ending. It's a contemporary fantasy story. Complaining about realism is quite silly. The movie isn't trying to be like Moonlight, and that's fine on both fronts. I'd get the realism complaints if La La Land was aiming for a more realistic vibe, but from the opening number alone you can tell it's not. I mean, it doesn't really go into the details of how he secured it. And I think it's better that it doesn't, because that would be boring and pointless. This movie obviously wasn't aiming for realism stylistically (which is fine). I think we're to used to hyper-realism in our cinema nowadays. I guess it can make something more open ended and fantastical like La La Land a bit jarring.
  17. Lol, this isn't Manchester by the Sea. The movie has a golden age musical fairytale feel to it all, with a dose of reality here and there.
