  1. But even though the subject matter is bleak and it is an indie film, it should still be doing better. It just got nominated for a Best Picture Drama from The Globes and might not make it to 15 domestic, while other artsy/indie Best Picture nominees will make twice that amount. But they don't have a name like Tatum. If he is a star, it should be performing better.
  2. Foxcatcher not doing all that great to merit a large expansion. So much for that movie making it to 20 domestic. Tatum is not a movie star/draw, and when Jupiter Ascending flops hopefully people will realize that. He is a male version of Megan Fox - it is just that he gets many more opportunities than her because he is a male.
  3. Selma could break out and end up at 100 domestic if it ends up winning Best Picture at The Oscars. More GA friendly than 12 Years a Slave. Imitation Game could break out and get to 80 domestic if it wins awards. Although with Imitation Game it is tough to know if audiences will turn away from a movie about a homosexual person. Milk received amazing reviews but only made like 25 domestic.
  4. That dumb buddy comedy with Reese and Vergara is going to flop with Pitch Perfect 2 being released immediately after it. For female moviegoers looking for an alternative to The Avengers, Pitch Perfect 2 is probably going to be a summer hit. The first one was released in October - which kind of limited its box office potential.
  5. Yeah. I really enjoyed her when she doing work in movies like Pleasantville and Election....then of course Hollywood tries to send her to the "romantic comedy" ghetto as they do with all 25 year old actresses....and now she is breaking out of that ghetto again.
  6. I think the Flixster audience score is in the 40s....just terrible....it won't have any legs and will finish under 90 domestic.
  7. Look for Wild to break out over the next month. Not only a 91% approval rating on RT and an Oscar nom. for Best Actress, but I was getting a haircut yesterday and noticed that Witherspoon is on the cover of Glamour Magazine, and one of the 3 or 4 faces on the cover of this month's People Magazine. Women love those magazines, so expect those cover photos to grab their attention. I can see Wild finishing in the 40s domestically.
  8. Gone Girl, The Fault in Our Stars, Mockingjay Part 1....all movies with audiences that were at least 60% female, and intelligent stories in general. The key is to make more movies about women - except make sure not to treat them as obsessed with finding a man, buying shoes/fashion, attending weddings, and living in Manhattan.
  9. Any news regarding theater expansions for Wild and Foxcatcher?
  10. I'm surprised that Foxcatcher hasn't expanded to more theaters. I live in the Chicago suburbs and really want to see it, but the big theaters near me with 22 screens and 30 screens aren't going to be showing it anytime soon. It might not expand to 500 theaters until January.
  11. Poor 4 weekdays in a row for Penguins. Big Hero 6 is stealing that audience. Not to mention that there were too many kids movies in October with Dolphin Tale 2, Boxtrolls, Book of Life, Alexander and the Terrible Day, etc. There is a point where overload factors in with parents. I'm of the belief that over the course of a year the mainstream studios release too many kids movies in the first place. And on Christmas I will bet that all 3 kids movies will under-perform expectations because they are all fighting against each other.
  12. No. By that time, it will have to deal with a deluge of kiddie fare like Night at the Museum 3, Annie, and Into the Woods. And before Night at the Museum arrives it has to deal with Big Hero 6. Big Hero 6 is already hurting its weekdays.
  13. Another terrible number for Penguins.....you people believing this will make anything north of 80 domestic are insane.
  14. How many screens will Wild be on this upcoming weekend? That one could break out among female moviegoers and end up making 40 domestic. 87% on RT, the highest score for a movie this year with a female in the leading role.
  15. Interstellar continues to show very strong legs. One wonders how many of the tickets being sold now are for repeat viewings. Apparently Inception had a lot of people go for 2 or 3 viewings to try to process everything.
  16. The most Penguins will get to domestically is 75. Big Hero 6 is just taking too much of that audience away. Reminds me of Muppets Most Wanted's situation.
  17. Terrible Monday numbers for Penguins, HB2, and DADT. Penguins will be lucky to get to about 70. HB2 will end up in the 40s. Dumb decision for Penguins to come out in late November while Big Hero 6 was tearing it up.
  18. King's Speech had the best acting, and the most restrained directing where the director gets out of the way. Social Network had the more interesting material/content in terms of examining capitalism and individualism in America.
  19. It moves at a blistering pace, yes...but that blistering pace removes yourself a little from the film on an emotional level. Constant back and forth cutbacks between the story and the lawyers at the table every minute is a little too much.
  20. I disagree. The director lets the scenes go on for a long time between Firth and Rush, and we get absorbed into the story because of it. The first time Firth and Rush meet in the office the scene literally goes on for 5 minutes straight. When watching that scene in a movie theater I was surprised how long the director let them interact before cutting to some other scene. There are other times in the movie where Firth and Rush talk for 5 minutes straight. In The Social Network, Fincher makes sure to make every scene lasts no more than 45 seconds before moving onto something else.
  21. Safest? Yes, definitely. But the acting from the two leads is so wonderful that it prevents the film from being mediocre.
  22. The demand is still there, they just stopped making them because some of them failed at the box office. The same way a studio could argue for years that audiences don't want to see a female superhero movie/action movie because of "Catwoman" or "Elektra" bombing. It is a self-fulfilling prophecy where they tell themselves that audiences in Oct./Nov./Dec. don't want a lot of adult dramas anymore. So instead they replace them with DADT and Horrible Bosses 2.
