  1. I'm going to cry for hours when Ninja Turtles passes Dragon 2 domestically. Anyone know where I can find cheap Kleenex?
  2. I thought Dragon 2 would do 275-300 domestic because it was such a superb kids animation film, and because something simple like Despicable Me 2 earned 330 domestic last summer with a 75% score on RT. I figured all of the 6 year old kids who showed up for that one would show up for something far superior like Dragon 2 - but I guess the Dragon series is aimed at a more adult/teen/more thoughtful audience.
  3. Wow, Get On Up is going to finish at only 30 million domestic. Incredible. I think everyone had that projected to make twice as much as that total.
  4. Terrific legs for Guardians. We were all wondering where the typical Pixar movie/Despicable Me 2 family audience was going to go this summer after Dragon 2 disappointed, and I think we have now found that out.
  5. Terrific legs for Guardians. Top 3 at the U.S. box office for 2014 now have an average RT score of 90%. Top 11 at the U.S. box office for 2014 have an average RT score of 75%. Transformers 4 is the mind-boggling outlier at #4 with only an 18%.
  6. Dragon 2 has now passed Lego Movie in worldwide total (530 million to only 470 million). Does this help Dragon's chances at getting The Oscar for animated film? I hope it does. Looks like Dragon 2 will end up with about 600 million worldwide.
  7. Wow, Get on Up will finish somewhere in the 30s. Incredible. Maybe it is "too white" for many mainstream Black audiences, like the movie The Great Debaters. That had Denzel in it, but that did not help much.
  8. There are not many mainstream movies in a year made with main characters who are Black. They make up about 12% of the U.S. population but are only the main character in about 7% of the mainstream movies. And this year, the big hit one that made 130 domestic had an 18% on RT, and so far the one that is bombing is the one with a 79% on RT. I predicted Get on Up would make 75 domestic.
  9. Because American students rank way, way down the list compared to other modern countries when it comes to math, science, and other subjects.
  10. The Butler - advertised by Oprah and Oprah's fans are mostly White. 42 was half about Jackie Robinson and half about Harrison Ford's character, so it was a movie like The Help that White people also went to see.
  11. It doesn't affect me either way - it is just interesting.
  12. Wow, Get on Up is only going to finish at about 40 domestically, even with good reviews. Why aren't more Black audiences / moviegoers going to see this kind of movie other than really stupid crap like Ride Along, Think Like a Man 7, Bad Boys 13, Big Momma's House 5, Tyler Perry's Madea part 17, and others. Spike Lee has said before there is a problem here with African-American audiences often not supporting movies based on real people and real events.
  13. Is it kind of surprising that Get on Up is not doing better in its first 8 days? Looks like it will only end up around 50 million domestically, even with good reviews. This sucks for those who wish there were more interesting portrayals of famous African-Americans in real life and real events shown in the movies, other than really stupid crap like Ride Along, Big Momma's House 5, Tyler Perry's "Why did I make this movie?", Think Like a Man 7, Bad Boys 12, and others. I know Guardians is popular, but still.
  14. I remain hopeful that The Academy will ignore the box office results. (*fingers crossed*)
  15. Poor Dragon still can't beat 22 Jump in a weekend....now 7 weekends straight. I figured by the 3rd or 4th weekend Dragon would finish ahead of it in the weekend numbers. At least it can celebrate somewhat when it wins The Oscar for best animated movie.
  16. Completely agree with this comment. They should wait until 60 reviews are in. They called Hercules with only 30 reviews in, and we all know the RT score will keep falling considering the average score is 5/10. It will probably end up around 50%.
  17. The top 10 grossing movies at the U.S. box office so far this year have an average RT score of 74%. Movies 11-20 have an average RT score of 62%. Movies 21-30 have an average RT score of 35%. Now I know that the 35% average for movies 21-30 will rise a little bit as the year goes on because of the fall Oscar dramas, but these are still insightful figures. I don't want to hear any more trash-talking from people who say that critics reviews don't matter at all. http://boxofficemojo.com/yearly/chart/?view=widedate&view2=domestic&yr=2014&p=.htm
  18. More adults over the age of 50 might come out to the movies more often if the movie industry decided to have some main characters/protagonists who were over 50 years old. Looking at the 80 or so mainstream movies released this year, the protagonist is over 50 years old in only about 5 of them. Your typical movie protagonist skews way too male, too young, and too White. Old people be damned, women be damned, and minorities be damned. I don't know the demographic make-up of users on this forum, but I would bet that many of us are interested in the movies/movie industry because most of us are White males under the age of 40.
  19. Guess I must have missed the memo where a July 4th OW weekend of 21 million and a final total of 75-80 million domestic is a big success considering her last comedy went 34/130 domestic.
  20. Glad to see that Sex Tape is flopping. Another moronic attempt at comedy goes down. Blended, Million Ways, Tammy, Sex Tape, etc. I know that Tammy and Think Like a Man 2 had low budgets so they will still be profitable, but they are still coming in lower than expected.
  21. The audience Flixster score for Sex Tape is really awful, considering it is Friday and will only go down a few more percentage points from here. It is at 53% now. This ain't having any legs whatsoever.
  22. I don't think Sex Tape will get that high. Probably only about 20 or so. 3 terrible comedies this summer have opened poorly on OW (Blended, Million Ways, Tammy).
  23. Yikes, Dragon 2 not getting to at least 3 million Saturday is frightening. Hopefully the official number gets it there. The word of mouth among parents must be that it is too intense, too scary, too emotional, and not silly enough. That is really my only explanation now. Parents are just being way too overprotective.
  24. I'm interested in seeing how much Hercules makes domestically as well as its RT score - just for the fact that it will be the 5th movie this year (out of 75 or so) with a main character who is Black. So far the 4 movies before it have averaged 70 million domestic and an average score of 30% on RT. Let's see if those averages go up or down when Hercules is released.
