But why would that be "corrupting"?? Why shouldn't Hollywood get a bigger share of "their" movie?? Other countries are 40%-45% so why is China so low & they want it even lower- that one year holding up payment to get an even lower cut. If they want to see Hollywood movies - and recent box office shows filmgoers do - they should pay a fair price like everyone else - I see no problem with HW wanting a fair cut on their product.
Because the more important your market, the more negociating power you have. 25% of FF7's gross will still be nearly $100 which is more than they'll get in any other OS market despite the 40-45% shares. If they're not happy the Chinese government would just tell them 'Well bye bye then' and they'd get nothing instead of 20-25%.

It depends on how movies generally behave in this market. In Japan a daily decline of 13% on a sunday would be a bad sign for legs but how does it work in SK ? Is sunday stronger than saturday on average or the opposite ?
edit : Thanks for the answer Rsyu.
-
Does a 13% daily decline say anything about the legs to come ?

2002, 2004, and 2010 are the only years where the #1 WW film didn't have the #1 OS take since 2000.
And with China and other OS markets expanding it will be getting more uncommon.
-
Bit different FF7 is biggest movie of all time in China TA had record weekend's but not a record gross.
China is an expanding market though. However impressive FF7's gross there may be a top 3 of all time DOM gross for TA1 was still more impressive imo.

Toy story 3
EDIT: It was 3rd that year OS behind Alice and HP 7.
Thanks. Doesn't happen that often then.
-
That's true.
But without that record breaking number in China for FF7 there wouldn't even be a fight between the two for the OS crown.
Yes, but without record breaking numbers DOM for TA1 and probably TA2 there could be a fight WW. And if my aunt had balls she'd be my uncle.

What was the last movie to win the year worldwide without winning the year OS ? I know Transformers and Frozen did the opposite these past 2 years, winning WW and OS but not DOM.

How much China Film takes home from FF7 gross?
Is this an upfront deal or do they get a % of gross?
How much Universal really gets out of this deal?
I heard the studios only get a pittance.
How come exhibitors, local or abroad, have so much power
in getting their share?
Because in the case of China, when your market is set to become the #1 market in the world, you have a lot of negociating power.

I would imagine that China will be strongly in Furious 7's favour though. AoU could end with $250M there (which would be 3rd of all time I believe) and still be short nearly $100M.
More than $100m if it ends with $250m. FF7 is looking at a $360-375m total.

Yeah, for the producers I guess so. A mix of luck and RDJ being an idiot then. The producers better get him to apologize.
-
These 'in how many markets is one movie ahead of the other on OW' are pretty pointless anyway since China will be deciding everything OS in the end. In that regard being ahead in China is more important than a lot of medium-sized or small markets put together.
-
Racist comments are not a matter of luck though.

Among stupid racist comments, this one has to be one of the dumbest ones I've seen. However, I think for a man who dropped out of high school to be able to put together a phrase like 'cultural genocide' just speaks to how bright he is.

For curious people, an interesting article..About happiness in the world, there is a ranking of the happiest countries in the world :
http://www.washingtonpost.com/graphics/world/world-happiness-2015/index.html
Switzerland is first.
Among the big countries Australia is 10th, the USA 15th, Brazil 16th, the UK 21st, Germany 26th, France 29th, Spain 36th, Japan 46th, South Korea 47, Italy 50, Russia 64, China 84 and India 117.
29th ? We're usually first at this ! First from the bottom of course.

I see. Thanks for that. However, looking at it in detail, last weekend those chains made up a market share of 37.2% for Conan and 37.1% for DBZ over the weekend for the screens and yet when it came to admissions the market share of the 5 chains was over 40% for both nearing 42% for Conan.
Basically, you can't really take the market share % for screens and expand it to admissions.
-
Yes but FF7's OD was a friday.
-
If it's so bad use 'ignore preferences'. No use whining about it on a thread.
And I agree with Rsyu above.
-
Wait, where do you see the market share of the usual locations for each movie ? That's very interesting data and I can't find it anywhere on the website.
-
Wow, our results are really different. I used last week's multipliers (2.393 and 2.469) and average ticket prices. How did you compute your estimates ?
Daily admissions :
Conan : 70813*2,393 = 169,455
DBZ : 61697*2,469=152,330
Daily grosses :
Conan : 169,455*1270.306 = 215 million yen
DBZ : 152,330*1342.11 = 204 million yen -
If same time as yesterday, in less than 15 minutes.
-
60% drop week-on-week, as expected.
-
Well on allociné the first has an average of 4/5 from the press (25 reviews) and the second 2.7 (19 reviews) so...

Yeah, I can agree with that. It's closer to negociating than corrupting.
