It's obviously benefiting from the lack of competition, but this type of release typically doesn't perform very well, and coming from Sony (which has been struggling) makes it even more impressive. >Detective Conan: Zero the Enforcer will likely have to relinquish its hold atop the box-office, but it became the highest-grossing film in the Detective Conan franchise this past Thursday, and will exceed the ¥7 billion milestone over the weekend. The twenty-second entry in the series is locked now to surpass Star Wars: The Last Jedi to become the highest-grossing film of 2018, so far. >Rampage is going to be a major disappointment, borderline bomb, for Warner Bros. in the market. It performed very poorly yesterday, and its pre-sales are mediocre at best. It'll probably achieve a third place debut, but its opening is going to be low. It's very likely to miss the ¥1 billion ($10 million) milestone. >Avengers: Infinity War will surpass in one fell swoop, The Amazing Spider-Man, The Amazing Spider-Man 2, and Avengers: Age of Ultron to become the fifth-highest grossing Marvel/DC film in the market over the weekend. It continues to be on track to eventually surpass The Avengers to become the highest-grossing non-Spider-Man Marvel/DC film in Japan. >Nomitori Samurai also appears to be a big disappointment, despite starring the often reliable Hiroshi Abe in the leading role. Since Toho didn't release it a few weeks earlier in time for Golden Week, though, it seems they knew this one wasn't going to perform very well. It'll be a struggle for it to make the Top 5. >Kamen Rider Amazons: The Final Judgement debuting all the way down in tenth place should look shocking since Kamen Rider films are usually good for a Top 3 debut at least, but this is a special release. This film is the conclusion of the Amazon Prime.jp Kamen Rider Amazons series, and is only playing on 88 screens.

It will continue to fall hard from here on, so I'm doubting it'll have the staying power to reach ¥4 billion, but it'll likely outgross The Avengers' ¥3.61 billion to become the highest-grossing non-Spider-Man Marvel/DC release in the market. >The Blood of Wolves, starring Koji Yakusho, debuts in third place with a decent start, selling 112,684 admissions across 337 screens over the weekend. The opening isn't anything noteworthy or anything, but it's solid enough in the post-Golden Week slot. >Then Youth, But Youth surprised over the weekend and sold enough admissions to come in fifth place, but no figures have been release for the film yet. Its weekend number is just a placeholder for now, and I do have it in sixth because Ready Player One likely came in fifth in revenue. Nikkatsu is a small distributor, and it sometimes takes a couple extra days for any numbers to be released from them. >Coco also experienced the big post-Golden Week drop, and its chances of reaching the blockbuster milestone of ¥5 billion appears in jeopardy, I believe it'll still reach it even if it takes another month, or two. There's very little for families/children to see until July, so it should perform well enough to crawl to the milestone.

First, please drop the feigned indignation. Second, where did I say they were more important ? You just can't use non-mature markets for long-time based comparisons, it's basic economic analysis. Japan has been a fairly stable market with no inflation for decades where as South-Korea has experienced massive growth in the past 15 years or so. In South-Korea's top 30 films by admissions, every single film has come out within the last 15 years. Every single one. Same reason why France or Germany make for better markets to use if you want to compare current movies to movies from 20 years ago than Mexico or Brazil. It depends on which markets. You can compare all these movies in mature markets such as the ones I mentioned above, but comparing them in markets that are still growing makes absolutely no sense. And thus it doesn't make much more sense to compare overall OS totals either. So AIW released in 2018 will gross more in China than Return of the King ? No kidding ! By the way, when a market is growing as fast as China is, a few years is a lot.

Once or twice per decade, yeah, although I think that with so many new markets emerging it might actually be even harder for a movie to become a true global phenomenon since it will require appealing massively to many more different cultures, where as twenty plus years ago it was basically North America, Europe and Japan.

True phenomenons are basically movies that overperform above market expectations at the time of their release in every market, or almost every market. Titanic and Avatar are of course the best examples of the last 20 years. I would also add E.T to that list. I would say it's far from all three of these, and looking at traditional stable markets is a good way to measure that : Japan : Titanic (26.20 billion yen), Avatar (15.60 billion yen), E.T (13.50 billion yen), AIW (4 billion yen) France : Titanic (21 million admissions), Avatar (nearly 15 million admissions), E.T (9.5 admissions), AIW (5-5.5 million admissions) etc. While there are movies like LOTR or HP where AIW is most likely bigger domestically, overseas, and accounting for market conditions, it's behind all the franchises you mentioned.

Actually, not really. In the US, it will at best make the top 30 adjusted. In France it will do at most 5M admissions, not even top 100 all time. Same thing in markets like Germany, Italy or Japan where it's really not looking at a record breaking performance at all. In the UK, based on average ticket price, it's looking at maybe 8-9 million admissions, where TFA did 17M, Spectre 13M, Skyfall 16M, etc. It's a huge success overall because it has managed to build on all the emerging markets while managing to keep a decent level of support in traditional markets, but we're far from "one of the biggest successes ever". People indeed lose the perspective with unadjusted dollars, combined nowadays with many growing markets overseas..

China's market in 2017 was a bit below ten times the size it was in 2009, so going only with market growth it would actually be $2b in China alone.

Indeed, at least in gross. In the official Japanese rankings it was #2 in its 6 weekend with the 2014 Conan movie being #1 in admissions. Such a memorable weekend, and run overall.
