Excluding Easter weekend, they are the two lowest weekends of the year so far, in terms of admissions, selling just above 80K and 50K admissions respectively. 'A Quiet Place' has achieved 3 consecutive weekends in first place and is by far the least-attended film that has achieved this feat in the last 7 years (at least). This can only be explained by the fact that the whole industry has completely tanked. Hopefully, 'Avengers: Infinity War' will infuse some life in this otherwise dead market next weekend.
  2. Easter Weekend 05–08/04/2018 Ranking Title Weekend admissions % change from last weekend Total admissions (by Sunday) Monday admissions Week 1 A Quiet Place 7,989 – 7,989 5,726 1 2 Ready Player One 3,485 -77.0% 29,436 2,086 2 3 Peter Rabbit 2,784 -74.0% 23,203 2,722 2 4 Tomb Raider 2,149 -73.0% 107,456 1,553 4 5 Game Night 1,740 – 1,740 2,891 1 6 La Ragazza Nella Nebbia [Italian–German–French] 1,573 -74.7% 11,345 1,205 2 7 Sherlock Gnomes 1,238 -74.2% 22,798 1,563 3 8 Red Sparrow 1,213 -70.9% 155,107 807 6 9 Pacific Rim Uprising 1,056 -80.2% 31,616 726 3 10 Leo Da Vinci: Missione Monna Lisa [English-language Italian] 1,014 -71.2% 7,348 1,129 2 Source: http://www.grandmagazine.gr/ngine/article/3942/box-office-pasxa-sto-xorio-adeies-oi-ai8ouses Important correction for the previous weekend: 'Leo Da Vinci: Missione Monna Lisa', which ranked 9th for the weekend was omitted. This has now been corrected. This week it ranked 10th. As expected, this weekend, Easter weekend in Greece, was the quietest of the year so far, selling a grand total of 27,567 admisssions. It was almost as quiet as Easter 2016 (20,457 admissions), while last year, 'The Fate of the Furious 8' inevitably raised the weekend's total admissions to 70,230. So far, 'Tomb Raider' has crossed 200K admissions and 'Red Sparrow' became the second-biggest film of the year, while 'A Quiet Place' managed a quiet opening at #1. Next weekend will see a rebound due to cinemas being empty (and most of them closed) on Great Friday and Great Saturday (last two days before Easter). Monday (a holiday) sold almost the same number of tickets as the entire weekend: 23,871. Three films managed to sell more tickets on Monday than on the entire weekend: 'Game Night', 'Sherlock Gnomes' and 'Leo Da Vinci: Missione Monna Lisa'.
  3. The first 3 months of the year have already passed. Based on weekend admission figures only, 2018 is trailing all 3 previous years (2015, 2016 and 2017) by 5-11%. It is still early to tell what will happen by the year's end and the difference is so small in absolute numbers (100-200K admissions) that sometimes all it takes is a single weekend to make a difference. The leading film of the year is by far 'Fifty Shades Freed', even though it is the least successful film of the franchise. Have a look at 2018's Top 10 here.
  4. What should we expect for Coco's next weekend? An increase? Will it stay flat again?
  5. Not only that, but even when all the numbers are up to date, country-specific number do not add up to the overseas total, because BOM receives the gross in local currency for each country and converts it to dollars based on the last weekend's exchange rate, which is totally stupid, since most of a film's gross has not been made on the most recent weekend but over a number of weekends. A very good example was DM2 which had a total of about $45M in Brazil and within 2 weeks, this total dropped (!) to $35M because of fluctuations in exchange rate. The take-home message is to completely ignore country-specific totals.Country-specific weekend figures are usually accurate but not always (in Greece, I can say for sure that BOM often gets it wrong).

All holdovers in the Top 10 dropped by more than 50%. And while newcomers collectively made up more than half of the weekend admissions, all films had small openings, resulting in an overall quiet weekend. Next weekend is Easter weekend, during which Friday and Saturday are dead quiet, so the weekend gross will drop even more. A 2-week period of school holidays starts today (Monday), meaning that animated and family films may see a boost to their sales. I have not mentioned the #1 film yet (and for that matter, any specific film's title), only because it doesn't seem to matter at all in these doldrums. 'Ready Player One' tanked in comparison to NA and China. The film's video-game vibe had already been addressed by 'Tomb Raider' 2 weeks ago and the futuristic virtual-reality element probably doesn't resonate with Greeks, who have to face the hard reality of poverty, unemployment and existential threats to national security (apologies for the digression into politics). 'Tomb Raider' will soon top 100K admissions, which 'The Shape of Water' has just achieved. 'Red Sparrow' has crossed 150K admissions and will soon surpass 'The Post' to become the second-biggest film of 2018. In other news, 'Coco' has now achieved a multiplier north of 8.2. This is better than any Pixar film (data exists for films since 2003), beating 'Finding Nemo'. This stands even when you include the 3–D re-release (28,110 admissions) to the original release (340,731 admissions), which makes the multiplier 8.09. 'Ferdinand' (11.9x multiplier) had surpassed Blue Sky Studios' best mulitplier a long time ago ('Rio 2' at 5.2x). 'Coco' has a small chance of beating 'Zootopia' (139,122 admissions) and 'Moana' (140,905 admissions). 'Ferdinand' has a small chance of beating 'Smurfs 3' (156,267 admissions) and 'The Boss Baby' (158,090 admissions).

  8. I am the thread manager and I tend to change the title whenever there is news about the Italian box office. I do not have time to look up stuff myself about the Italian box office and I don't speak Italian so it would not be the easiest thing to do. I don't think anyone should be complaining that I haven't changed the thread title, since there have only been 2 posts in the last 2 months. Seriously, this thread is a joke and I'm sure there are Italians or Italian-speaking people that visit this forum so it should really be their responsibility to post stuff here. When they do that, I will update the thread title accordingly.
  9. I thought it needed about $45M from Japan. It's at $780M atm and in most other markets, Coco wrapped up its run.
  10. Uprisings and detectives were no match against her and despite a record of 6 releases entering the Top 10, cumulative admissions reached a new low for 2018, falling into five digits at around 95,000. This total was, however, identical to last year's. 'Tomb Raider' will most likely top 100K admissions, so it has certainly been successful enough. 'Pacifim Rim 2' and 'Sherlock Gnomes' both had dismal openings compared to their predecssors ('Pacific Rim' and 'Gnomeo and Juliet'), which opened to 16,701 admissions in September 2013 and 20,456 admissions in February 2011, resepctively. The latter's opening is even worse when you consider the complete lack of competition. Other openers were even more disappointing. 'You Were Never Really Here' had the best per-screen average, at 446 admissions. Conversely, 'Red Sparrow' is doing well and may soon become 2018's second biggest film, behind 'Fifty Shades Freed'. 'Tadeo Jones 2' experienced its first big drop, while another animated film, 'Peter Rabbit', had very quiet previews despite being available on 44 screens nationwide.
  11. Hey, sorry, I totally forgot about this. I've seen some other films by the same director ('God Loves Caviar' and 'El Greco') and I did not like the films at all. Their plot was ok, but the directing, the absolute lack of music in the background and the uninteresting dialogues made the films really bad and it's a shame because these stories had great potential. Furthermore, with regard to 'Kazantzakis', I totally disagree with the message of the trailer that his dispute against the Orthodox Church is analogous to "light vs darkness". I don't even know what the dispute was about but when it is defined in those terms, you can tell that the portrayal of this dispute will be very biased towards one side. I'm not saying I'd never watch it but I don't really care for it at all.
  12. 1. When do the school holidays start? Is this week the first week. 2. I really hope Coco increases next weekend 3. Can someone let us know how the weekdays are going?

Cumulative admissions (114,259) were up from last week but down from last year (135,821) by 16%. Lara Croft almost matched the opening of the previous 'Lara Croft' film, from 2003. Overall, its opening was average for a video-game adaptation, as seen below: Video-game adaptations Title National OW Release date Total admissions Multiple Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time 60,569 Thu 20 May 10 176,791 2.92 Assassin's Creed 53,502 Thu 5 Jan 17 133,185 2.49 Lara Croft: The Cradle of Life 43,000 Fri 3 Oct 03 > 108,000 2.79* Tomb Raider 40,350 Thu 15 Mar 18 – – Warcraft 36,787 Thu 9 Jun 16 96,591 2.63 Angry Birds 32,214 Thu 12 May 16 94,718 2.94 Resident Evil 2 (2004)** 24,238 Fri 22 Oct 04 65,128 3.03*** Need for Speed 20,048 Thu 20 Mar 14 70,465 3.51 *For this calculation, 120,000 admissions were used as an estimate of the final total. **This is the biggest 'Resident Evil' film, both in terms of opening weekend and total gross. The performance of the rest can be found here. 'Resident Evil: The Final Chapter' (2017) sold 25,749 admissions in total. ***For this calculation, 73,500 admissions were used as an estimate of the final total. 'Red Sparrow' and 'Three Billboards' crossed 100K admissions. The prior has surpassed all Jennifer Lawrence films, including all 'X-Men' films and all 'Hunger Games' films, except for 'Mockingjay – Part 1' (128,094 admissions). 'Red Sparrow' will top that too over the coming week. Oscar Best Picture winner, 'The Shape of Water' had the sharpest drop of the Top 10. Perhaps, after it won the Oscars, word got out into the mainstream that it is actually not as good as the hype suggests (this could also explain the not so impressive hold of last weekend), although I've got no data to prove this theory otherwise. 'Tadeo Jones 2's monopoly of the animated market will end next weekend with the arrival of 'Sherlock Gnomes', although it has done quite well even if it plummets next week. 'Death Wish' clearly had worse word-of-mouth than 'Death of Stalin' as their relative ranking got reverted on their sophomore frame. 'Black Panther' has officially achieved the best multiple of the MCU. It will surpass 'Iron Man' any day now and could even top 'Iron Man 2' (154,360 admissions). Nothing of note for the two other openers near the bottom of the chart.
  14. I guess all we can do is take into account anyone who admits they were influenced strongly by a certain story. James Cameron says he was influenced specifically by adventure novels by Edgar Rice Burroughs and H. Rider Haggard and more generally from "every single science fiction book" he had read in his childhood. Disney also admits that Frozen was based on The Snow Queen. Illumination Entertainment does not admit that SLOP is ripf-off of Toy Story and apart from the general premise, there is not much else in common. One exception is probably The Lion King, which is a clear rip-off from Kimba, The White Lion.
  15. Oh yeah, I forgot Zootopia. Lion King and Nemo don't count because what matters is the gross without the re-releases.
  16. I wish it could beat Secret Life of Pets as the biggest original animated film of all time.

Total admissions barely topped 100K admissions (106,515), since no new films opened above 10K admissions. Three death-related titles opened in the Top 10 but neither seem to have any chances of a notable run. 'Red Sparrow' had a solid sophomore hold and will cross the 100K-admission milestone in the next few days. Oscar Best-Picture winner, 'The Shape of Water', managed to stay flat from last weekend, although I was expecting at least a small increase. It will still reach 100K admissions, as wiill 'Three Billboards'. 'Black Panther' is on its way to top 'Iron Man' and become the second-biggest stand-alone MCU film, behind 'Doctor Strange' (169K admissions). It has achieved the second-best multiplier among MCU films (just ahead of 'Captain America: The Winter Soldier') and will pass the MCU's best multilplier, that of the first 'Guardians of the Galaxy' (3.44x) any day now. Nothing notable for films below the Top 10. 'Tadeo Jones 2' will soon top 50K admissions. Next week, 'Tomb Raider' seems to be the likeliest winner of the weekend. 'Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life' (2003) opened to 43K admissions so I think this one can top 30K admissions. Check out next week's report for a comaprison with 'Prince of Persia', 'Warcraft', 'Assasin's Creed' and others.
  18. Coco's performance will tell. The movie is a (post-)modern masterpiece imo.

Jennifer Lawence managed to attract her core fans and some more, although she is hardly a mega-star in Greece, like DiCaprio. 'Red Sparrow' is the biggest opening for a film starring Jennifer Lawrence outside the 'Hunger Games' and 'X-Men' frachises. Here are a few of them: Title Opening weekend Release date Total Sliver Linings Playbook 17,589 Thu 31 Jan 13 111,266 American Hustle 23,747 Thu 9 Jan 14 113,376 Joy 11,312 Thu 24 Dec 15 41,388 Passengers 14,161 Thu 29 Dec 16 46,003 Mother 15,003 Thu 19 Oct 17 43,691 Red Sparrow 41,982 Thu 1 Mar 18 – 'Tadeo Jones 2' had a minuscule drop, since it has virtually the entire animated market to itself. 'Black Panther' had another sub-50% drop and will surpass 'Thor' and 'Spider-Man: Homecoming' any day now. It also has a chance of surpassing the first 'Iron Man' film. 'Fifty Shades Freed' is looking for a final tally around 220K admissions, which is about 15% lower than its immediate predeccessor. It has held better than that film, but not enough to catch up to it. Oscar weekend saw many films experience small drops, especially 'Three Billboards', which will almost certainly top 100K admissions. I expect 'The Shape of Water' to do the same after winning Best Picture, as we should see an increase next weekend. This is how Best Picture candidates have fared so far: Oscar Films 2017 Title Total admissions* Dunkirk 200,754 The Post 151,018 Phantom Thread 121,588 Darkest Hour 112,352 Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri 88,118 Get Out 74,973 The Shape of Water 69,737 Call Me by Your Name 18,958 Lady Bird 5,696 *With the exception of 'Three Billboards', 'Shape of Water' and 'Lady Bird' (which opened this week), the rest of the films have either finished their run or are very near the end. Last year there was only 1 film that crossed the 100K-admission milestone: 'La La Land' (206,497 admissions). This year there are 4 and there may be 2 more that will get there. This year, 7 films earned more than 60K admissions. Last year, 7 films earned less than 60K admissions. It therefore seems that critical appraisal and popularity among the general public correlated better this year.
