  1. With 45% drops from now on OS, a $490M gross stateside and an $85M gross in Japan, BatB can make it to $1.2B. I wonder if FF8 can beat that...

This post is for the pre-Easter weekend. It was the quietest of the year so far (Easter weekend was even lower). 'The Boss Baby' had an average opening for a DWA film – and almost identical to last autumn's 'Trolls'. 'Smurfs 3' and 'Beauty' took a hit. Other films didn't drop too bad. Other openers were virtually non-existent. Expect an update tomorrow regarding the long Easter weekend (including Monday). Bear in mind that cinemas go quiet during Easter with a lot of them being closed completely on the Friday and Saturday before Easter Sunday. Ta ta for now!
  3. Based on weekend admissions, the first quarter of 2017 is trailing 2016 and 2015 by slightly more than 10%. It is however ahead of 2013 and 2014. The second quarter certainly looks more promising than 2016 with such films as Furious 8, Guardians of the Galaxy 2, Pirates of the Caribbean 5, Wonder Woman and Transformers 5. With such a slate, I am almost certain that the second quearter will rebound. Will it be enough to make up for the lost ground though?

The film opened 6.9% lower than its predecessor (56.2K admissions) and 26.9% lower than the first 'Smurfs' film (71.6K admissions). Both of those opened in the much more lucrative autumn period, so I don't expect this one to match their legs. However, a total around 150K admissions is probably achievable. All holdovers in the Top 10 dropped heavily – after all, it's not easy to survive a tsunami of new films flooding the marketplace. 'Beauty' is moving away from the possibility of a 200K-admission run. The question is whether it will surpass 'Logan' or not... 'Get Out' didn't manage to replicate last weekend's success. 'Power Rangers' has only reassured us that it's a flop. 'Kong 2' and 'Logan' continue their precipitous drop to the ground. As for newcomers, 'The Distinguished Citizen' had the highest per-screen average (580 admissions). Nothing notable happened other than 'Sumrfs 3'. However, cumulative weekend admissions bounced back to 6 digits: about 120,000. This was all thanks to the tiny blue mushroom parasites, so a return to 5 digits next weekend is likely. The week after that awaits the 'Fate of the Furious'...

It was also the best second weekend of the year, out-grossing the previous high of 'Logan' (36,575 admissions), achieved two weeks ago. If the film maintains sub-40% drops, it is well on its way to 200K admissions. 'Get Out' had the best hold of the weekend, and Univeral must already be happy with that total. 'Kong 2' and 'Logan' both dropped heavily. 'Logan' has officially achieved the highest known admissions tally for the X-Men franchise though. Finally, 'LEGO Batman' held well too but is nearing the end of its run (80K admissions is the ceiling). The weekend's admissions were 94.9K admissions, which is less than half from last year, when 'Batman v Superman' won the spotlight with its humongous opening. It is the lowest admissions tally for a weekend since last August and the first time it falls below 100K admissions since mid-October. In fact, last Saturday was Greece's Independence Day, but that obviously did not boost the box office in any way. Five out of nine new films debuted in the Top 10, but that was not due to their strength but due to the general drop in attendance as holdovers lost screens. None of the nine films topped 10K admissions. 'Power Rangers' fared much worse in Greece than in the US and Canada. In other news, 'Moana' (140.5K admissions) finally out-grossed 'Zootopia' (139.1K admissions). It has out-grossed all WDAS films of this decade save for 'Tangled' and 'Frozen'. Interestingly, despite 'Moana's massive 11x multiplier, 'Puss in Boots' opened on the same date in 2011 and achieved a 12.3x multiplier, which 'Moana' is unlikely to achieve. The last possible achievement for 'Moana' is to surpass 'The Princess and the Frog' (144.7K admissions). 'La La Land' (206.2K admissions) crashed suddenly and may not even join 2016's Top 10 – 'The Secret Life of Pets' is at #10 with 207.6K admissions. Greek film 'Perfect Strangers is also less than 500 admissions from reaching 200K, but with a 102-admission weekend, the milestone is slowly fading away into the distance. 'Sing' (189.6K admissions) is giving 'The Good Dinosaur' (195.3K admissions) a run for its money. Finally, 'Fifty Shades' is basically over at 260K admissions, 110K admissions less than its predecessor, but still an impressive number.
  6. ERs have completely changed the landscape. All of last year's films would have crossed $1.2B with the ERs of 2011 or 2012.
  7. Weekend holds are also quite important. If the drop is very good this wknd, hope and expectations will escalate.

  9. In Greece, film not so amazing as rest of world but still very good. 57.9K-admission opening is the second best for live action Disney fairytale, behind Alice in Wonderland (83.2K admissions) and way ahead of Maleficent, Cinderella and Jungle Book. Second best opening of the year, behind 'Fifty Shades Darker' (88.4K admissions). 'Beauty' did have an impressive opening though, even if it was not as record-breaking as in other countries. Among live-action adaptations of known Disney fairytales, 'Beauty' was ahead of 'Maleficent' (45.7K admissions) and 'Cinderella' (44.9K admissions) and only trailed 'Alice in Wonderland' (83.2K admissions). In terms of Disney live action in general (excluding the 'Pirates of the Caribbean' franchise), it is the best effort since 2010's 'Prince of Persia' (60.6K admisisons). It's also the second-biggest opening of the year so far, behind 'Fifty Shades Darker'. If 'Beauty' follows the trajectory of similar films, it could achieve a 3x mulitplier, with a final total north of 170K admissions. However, I think that 200K admissions is a probable outcome. Peculiarly, all films in last week's Top 10 dropped by more than 50%, even though the screen count drop was not terribly high. 'Kong 2' is very unlikely to approach its predecssor's 231.2K admissions. By the looks of it, it will be lucky to reach half that number. 'Logan', on the other hand, has exceeded all expectations and will soon surpass 'X2' to become the highest-grossing (known) X-Men film – I don't have numbers for 'X-Men' (2001) and 'The Last Stand' (2006). 'LEGO Batman' has officially surpassed 'The LEGO Movie', while 'Manchester' and 'Moonlight' are both nearing the end of their very respectable runs. As for other newcomers, they all pale in comparison to 'Beauty' and didn't make a significant splash in any way. The best per-screen average belongs to 'Gleißendes Glück' (648 admissions).
  11. However, the result was still satisfactory and the film can hope for a long run if it's not crushed by 'Beauty and the Beast' or 'Power Rangers' in the coming weeks. With no other opener in the Top 10, what was more impressive was a long list of holdovers. 'Logan' had an amazing 35% hold. That is something you rarely see among superhero films, suggesting this was a very good one. The total will surpass 'X-Men Origins: Wolverine' during the week. After that, the next target is 'X2: X-Men United' (169.1K admissions). I don't have the admissions for the first or third X-Men films, but certainly 'Logan' has been a big success regardless. Oscar films' Manchester', 'Moonlight' and 'La La Land' all had drops in the 20s and 'La La Land' has finally crossed 200K admissions. It looks poised to approach 220K admissions, thus ranking #6 among 2016 films. It is currently at #11. 'Trainspotting 2' and 'Fifty Shades Darker' dropped quite steeply, although the latter had its best drop yet. It is headed towards 265-270K admissions, which 100K admissions less than its predecessor. Animated films showed continuing strength. 'LEGO Batman' and 'Moana' are both very close to surpassing 'The LEGO Movie' and 'Zootopia' respectively. 'Sing' is still aiming for 200K admissions. Next week, 'Beauty and the Beast' will attempt to cast a spell on the market. With expectations being very high in the US, I don't really know what to expect. The ceiling is probably 'Alice's 83.2K-admission opening, but 'Beauty' may open closer to 'Cinderella's 44.9K admissions. I would certainly bet on 'Beauty' opening between the two.
  12. Weekend 02–05/03/2017 Ranking Title Weekend admissions % change from last weekend Total admissions Week 1 Logan 55,871 N/A 55,871 1 2 Manchester by the Sea 9,388 +4.6% 37,102 3 3 T2 Trainspotting 7,894 N/A 7,894 1 4 The LEGO Batman Movie 7,498 -17.8% 57,449 4 5 Moonlight 6,946 +454.8% 32,564 6 6 Fifty Shades Darker 6,803 -53.1% 247,736 4 7 La La Land 5,139 -23.5% 197,631 11 8 John Wick 2 4,585 -59.1% 50,492 3 9 Sing 2,818 +0.3% 182,751 12 10 Moana 2,490 -7.5% 133,178 11 Source: http://flix.gr/news/box-office-02032017.html 'Logan' opened on the high side of expectations and approached 'X-Men Origins: Wolverine' (61.5K admissions). It is in good shape to out-gross that film's total if it manages not to collapse in the following weeks, although 'Kong 2', 'Beauty' and 'Power Rangers' will make tough competition. In the meantime, Best Picture winner 'Moonlight' had an amazing boost, although still quite a disappointing number in absolute terms. It should be able to reach 50K admissions. 'Manchester' also saw a boost after winning two awards and also seems poised to reach 50K admissions and maybe even surpass 'Arrival'. 'La La Land', however, had a mild drop which can probably be explained by the fact that it increased last week. Its weekend figure was still higher than what it earned two weeks ago, so clearly the publicity from the Oscars and its 6 awards have done it some good. The 200K-admission milestone will be surpassed during the week. Its cumulative total is still ahead of 'The King's Speech' during the same point in its run, but the weekend figure is smaller. It has been in the Top 10 for 11 weeks now. Even if it doesn't reach 225K admissions, though, it has already surpassed all expectations. 'T2 Trainspotting' had a quiet opening. Its predecessor's gross is not known so no comparisons can be made. With regard to other holdovers, 'LEGO Batman' will almost certainly surpass 'The LEGO Movie' (66.8K admissions) after another impressive hold. 'Sing' and 'Moana' re-appeared in the Top 10. 'Sing' has been in the Top 10 for 10 non-consecutive weekends; 'Moana' for 9. The prior has a chance of surpassing 200K admissions (and maybe even 'The Secret Life of Pets') if it has very good holds for the next weeks. It is not unheard of for animated films to hold so well for so long, however, there is no guarantee that it will. On the weekend that 'The Good Dinosaur' earned about 2.5K admisisons, it had made 191K admissions in total, and despite having very strong holds until then, it dropped very hard after that and didn't even make it to 200K admissions. 'Sing' is ahead of that film in weekend figures but behind it in terms of cumulative admissions. 'Moana', on the other hand, has a far greater chance of surpassing 'Zootopia'. 'Darker' continued its precipitous descent. Reaching 250K admissions is no easy feat regardless. 'John Wick 2' had a massive drop but it has already made more than 3 times its predecessor's total. Last weekend sold more admissions than the same weekend last year and that will probably continue next week with 'Kong: Skull Island'. The first film sold 72K admissions in 5 days. Although expecting that level of traffic is probably too optimistic, this one should be able to clear 40K admissions, at least, in its first 4 days.
  13. I corrected a few mistakes from yesterday's post: 4-day admissions were actually above 100K admissions, 'La La Land' was not #1 on Clean Monday and 'Hidden Figures's admissions have been updated. Best Picture nominees have done quite well this year: Title Admissions Up to La La Land 189,626 27/02/17 Arrival 57,965 Final Hacksaw Ridge 40,040 Final Moonlight 24,583 27/02/17 Manchester by the Sea 24,545 27/02/17 Lion 24,069 27/02/17 Hell or High Water 18,645 27/02/17 Hidden Figures 6,794 27/02/17 'Lion' and 'Hell's runs are almost over. 'Moonlight' may reach 30K admissions. 'Manchester' could even surpass 'Arrival' if it holds well (otherwise, a total above 'Hacksaw' is very likely). 'Hidden Figures' may reach the high 20s and 'La La Land' is certainly crossing the 200K-admission milestone. Could go much higher.

These dismal results are worse than the same weekend last year (118K admissions) and worse than last year's Carnival–Clean Monday weekend (114K admissions from Thu to Sun, 143K admissions including Monday). 'Fifty Shades Darker' scored a hat trick, although that indicates other films' weakness more than anything else. 'Darker' plunged 57.2%, which is on par with 'Grey's 3rd weekend drop (58.6%). The drop was the biggest in the Top 10. 'A Cure for Wellness' also dropped significantly, which suggests that it was underwhelming, in line with the reviews. Other non-Oscar films saw drops around 20-25%. 'The LEGO Batman Movie' has managed to cover most of the distance between itself and its predecessor. It scored a bigger third weekend and has decreased its lag from 6.7K to 3.5K admissions. Whatever number it finishes at, it will still have retained most of its predecessor's admissions (at least 90%) which is a feat many sequels don't achieve. Finally, the big winners of the weekend were 'La La Land' and 'Manchester by the Sea'. 'La La Land' will soon cross 200K admissions, but after losing Best Picture, it's uncertain whether it will hold well next weekend. Last (and least), newcomers were quite disappointing. 'Médecin de Campagne' had the biggest per-screen average (536 admissions). I'll create a table of Oscar films once I get weekend figures for films below the Top 10. Next week, 'Logan' will attempt to reinvigorate the box office. 'The Wolverine' opened to 23,702 admissions in July 2013, before finishing off with 105K admissions. 'X-Men Origins: Wolverine' opened to 61.5K admissions and ended with a much smaller mulitplier and 143.4K admissions in total. I think this one will be closer to 'X-Men: Apocalypse's 42.3K-admission opening and 115K-admission total. 'Trainspotting 2' also opens this week and is a completely unknown quantity (probably small though). The first film came out in 1996.

The seuqel had a steeper drop than the original (62% vs 56%), even though the first one opened on Valentine's Day weekend. However the weekdays, and especially Tuesday, were very strong (Mon-to-Wed sold 69,104 admissions vs 'Grey's 78,859 admissions) so 'Darker' is now trailing 'Grey' by 32%, whereas last week it was trailing it by 37%. If it follows 'Grey's trajectory from now on, 'Darker' will reach 240K admissions (vs the original's 370K admissions). As for 'LEGO Batman', its lead over its predecessor has disappeared. It had a lower second weekend (12,165 vs 14,705 admissions) and a lower 11-day total (36,512 vs 43,184 admissions). 'The LEGO Movie's first Tuesday was the 25 March national holiday though. Next Monday, on the other hand, is another public holiday so we will see if 'LEGO Batman' can gain the lost ground (I doubt it). Other films in their sophomore frame were 'Neruda' which didn't hold incredibly well but is already making decent numbers for a non-Hollywood film. 'The Space Between Us' had the best hold of the weekend and nothing else to show for it. The news was slightly brighter for newcomers. 'John Wick 2' had a 100%+ increase from its predecessor's opening (6,300 admissions) and is less than 500 admissions away from surpassing its entire run (14,823 admissions). 'Manchester by the Sea' had an amazing per-screen average of 1,170 admissions, beating Neruda's average from last week. 'A Cure for Wellness', on the other hand, was a disappointment. With a bit of luck, 'Split' may surpass 'Assassin's Creed' as January's biggest film. 'La La Land' can easily reach 200K admissions if it gets a boost from the Oscars (next Sunday). It is still ahead of 'The King's Speech' (141,808 admissions after 9 weekends) but is making about half in weekend earnings. Finally, 'Rings' had an even steeper drop this weekend.

That drop is much better than the 54.7% in North America and is about average among European countries. Let's not forget that the first film was fortunate enough to open on a year when Valentine's Day fell on a Saturday, inflating the weekend box office significantly. In fact, the sequel opened to a bigger Thursday in Greece (22,087 vs 21,107 admissions), but the remainder of the weekend saw no significant boost. This time round, Valentine's Day falls on a Tuesday, so I would expect the Monday–Wednesday to be on par with 78,859 admissions earned by the original during the same period. 'The LEGO Batman Movie' opened 17% higher than the 'The LEGO Movie', although the bar was set quite low anyway. We will be looking to see if it beats the 66,782-admission total of the latter. 'Neruda' was probably the most impressive opening of the weekend, with a booming per-screen average of 1,141 admissions. 'The Space Between Us', on the other hand, was one of the many victims of too much competition, since it has become a regular practice for Greek distributors to release more than 5 films per weekend (often around 10). 'Split', 'Rings', 'Moonlight' and 'La La Land' were the films most affected by the sweeping entry of 'Fifty Shades Darker', however the first one has already surpassed 100K admissions and the last one is still headed for 200K admissions. 'Sing' and 'Moana' remained in the Top 10 once again, enjoying the best holds of the weekend and continuing their ascent. As for the 2016 yearly box office, mediasalles.it has released its report. Estimates were very close to actuals: the final admissions tally is 10.025M admissions and the gross is 64.4M€. The average ticket price was the lowest of the past 12 years. With regard to the Greek-speaking world, Cyprus saw a 7.1% uptick in admissions (from 688K in 2015 to 737K in 2016) but, although it is the highest number of the past four years, every other year before that all the way back to 1995 sold more admissions. In terms of gross, 2016 was the 11th best year of the last two decades. Since 1995, though, the average ticket price of 2016 (7.42€) was the second-highest, only behind 2010's 8.23€. 20. Do you think it's probably because the rest require visual effects that are too expensive, so it's impossible to compete with their Hollywood counterparts?
