  1. Weekend 07–10/12/2017 Ranking Title Weekend admissions % change from last weekend Total admissions Week 1 Καζαντζάκης (Kazantzakis) [GR] 20,625 -55.0% 183,902 3 2 Ο Θησαυρός (Treasure) [GR] 16,304 N/A 16,304 1 3 Paddington 2 15,202 -25.4% 38,812 2 4 Wonder Wheel 13,844 N/A 13,844 1 5 Murder on the Orient Express 13,725 -46.6% 305,936 5 6 The Square [Swedish–German–French–Danish] 6,862 N/A 6,862 1 7 Justice League 6,045 -48.0% 150,586 4 8 A Bad Mom's Christmas 3,616 N/A 3,616 1 9 Daddy's Home 2 3,219 -61.6% 16,723 2 10 Το τελευταίο σημείωμα (The Last Note) [GR] 2,435 -36.4% 198,400 7 Source: http://flix.gr/news/box-office-07122017.html 'Kazantzakis' became the third film to three-peat this year, following 'Fifty Shades Darker' in February and 'The Fate of the Furious' in April. It was, however, a Pyrrhic victory since it dropped 55%, due to the release of a Greek comedy called 'Treasure'. The remaining run of 'Kazantzakis' is likely to short-lived, since it will face fierce competition from 2 other Greek films on the following weekends. 'Treasure' had a rather quiet debut at #2. Of the three other openers in the Top 10, only 'The Square' is worth noting, for achieving an 858-admission per-screen average. 'Paddington 2' had an imrpessive hold, but with 'Coco' and 'Ferdinand' being released over the next two weekends, it is difficult to tell if it can match its predecessor's 92,307-admission total. 'Orient Express' continued its phenomenal (for these grim times) run and is days away from becoming the biggest film of the year. Its final total should be somewhere around 330–340K admissions. 'The Last Note' will almost certainly cross 200K admissions, just like 'With Heart & Soul' (2009), but will not get much further. Total admissions this weekend were slightly higher than last year. The fun starts next weekend, when 'Polyxeni' (another Greek historical drama), 'The Last Jedi' and 'Coco' are being released. It will be a very busy weekend, 'The Last Jedi' being the most likely winner.
  2. Approximately 15% drop in China this weekend. Hooray!

  4. It's probably $172.26 million. They just forgot the last three digits. That means $1 million above estimates.
  5. Weekend 30/11–03/12/2017 Ranking Title Weekend admissions % change from last weekend Total admissions Week 1 Καζαντζάκης (Kazantzakis) [GR] 45,875 -21.0% 143,946 2 2 Murder on the Orient Express 25,700 -20.4% 280,153 4 3 Paddington 2 20,376 N/A 20,376 1 4 Justice League 11,631 -44.6% 137,977 3 5 Daddy's Home 2 8,372 N/A 8,372 1 6 Lady Macbeth 5,240 N/A 5,240 1 7 Το τελευταίο σημείωμα (The Last Note) [GR] 3,830 -23.8% 193,303 6 8 Happy Family 3,141 -44.5% 31,385 4 9 Jigsaw 2,779 +5.4% 46,025 4 10 Thor: Ragnarok 2,239 -22.0% 162,418 5 Source: http://flix.gr/news/box-office-30112017.html Just like 'The Last Note' before it, historical drama 'Kazantzakis' had a minor drop, a bit bigger than 20%. Reaching the 200K-admission milestone is a foregone conclusion. With three new Greek films being released on the next three consecutive weeekends it could drop hard from now on. 'Murder on the Orient Express' is undoubtedly the biggest surprise of the year for the Greek box office. It could top 'Pirates 5' as early as next weekend to rank #1 for the year and a 350K-admission finish is within the realm of possibilities. Yes, 'It' was also a surprise but with a (then) all-time record of worldwide trailer views within 24 hours, the signs were there beforehand. 'Paddington 2' achieved a significant bump from the original's opening (12,730 admissions) but it still quite low nevertheless. 'Justice League' has surpassed fellow DC films 'Wonder Woman' (125,196 admissions) and 'Man of Steel' (129,721 admissions) and this year's 'Spider-Man: Homecoming' (127,663 admissions) but will fall behind this year's 'Thor 3' and 'Logan' (189,928 admissions) and fellow DC film 'Suidice Squad' (207,982 admissions). A couple of minor openings in the middel chart were followed by 'The Last Note' which is still on course to cross 200K admissions, even if only by a little. 'Jigsaw' had a small bump which makes it seem that it will manage to surpass 'Saw VI' (upper estimate: 48K admissions), but none of the other 'Saw' films. Finally, 'Thor 3' had a nice hold and will get close to last year's 'Doctor Strange' (169,010 admissions) even if it doesn't overtake it. With around 145K admissions, this weekend is the 5th in a row that remains above last year. The slate for December looks quite strong, so there are still hopes that this year will end up above the last one. Check the first page of this thread for updated yearly and all-time charts.
  6. If the second-weekend boosts in numerous markets taught us anything, it's that it could happen elsewhere too. That's obviously where I'm basing my whole argument. Holidays are coming up so don't be so quick to dismiss this. I mean yeah, it's far-fetched but everything about this movie has been far-fetched so far...
  7. I read this before learning about the China second-weekend boost. I thought, why is this guy saying this? Since when could China + Japan make $350M after an $18.2M opening in China? I can't believe that a day later this is actually a possibility. Note: I'm not criticisng the post. I would have thought the same, but WOW this weekend has turned things upside down. And even better, China is not the only market that got a boost. 5 more did. I don't wanna push my hopes up but this is getting increasingly interesting by the day. Best post-Thanksgiving hold in the US among all movies that opened above $35M. This is impressive. [UPDATE] oops! it's actually second-best. I missed The Grinch!
  8. Exactly! That drop was unprecedented. Its Monday was on par with Moana and its Tuesday was higher than Moana. So it seems like sth is going on here. The multiplier will definitely be higher than Moana's. Whether it can reach Frozen levels, no one knows, but if it beats DM3 as this year's top animated film in NA, that would be enough for me.
  9. Can someone post a yearly admissions chart for 2017? Thanks.
  10. Maybe a comparison with other Nolan / MCU films would help us decide who's right. C'mon guys, there must be someone committed enough to do some better reporting on Italy. I would do it myself but I spend too much time on Greece and I don't speak Italian (obviously preferable in order to access Italian sources). Any Italians/Italian speakers up for the task?
  11. No idea. In all my (desperate) searches I have come across very few mentions of grosses rather than admissions. Only Box Office Mojo has grosses but the international section of BOM is not very accurate so I can't really trust it. I found one source that explicitly states the gross in euros (dryfrost) for 2006-2008: http://dryfrost.blogspot.co.uk/2009/02/box-office-2006-08.html. I have no idea if this blog is accurate or where it got its data from. The rest that I have added are either calculated by multiplying the final admission total by the average yearly ticket price (avg) or mutliplying the last BOM gross for the film by the exchange rate on that weekend (BOM). As you can see, the results are very variable so I can't say anything for sure. 1 Loufa & Parallagi 9.73M € (BOM) or 8.68M € (avg) 2 Titanic 9.15-9.6M € (avg) 3 300 8.85M € (dryfrost) or 8.36M € (BOM) or 8.91M € (avg) 4 Avatar 7.81M € (BOM) 5 Touch of Spice 7.16M € (BOM) 6 Safe Sex 6.48M € (avg) 7 El Greco 6.41M € (dryfrost) or 5.61M € (BOM) or 5.75M € (avg) 8 Lord of the Rings 3 6.32M € (BOM) 9 Mamma Mia! 5.75M € (dryfrost) 10 Troy 5.58M € (BOM) By the looks of it I don't think any film has ever crossed 10M €. The top spot is a 3-way draw between 'Loufa & Parallagi', 'Titanic' and '300' but as you can see each source gives wildly different results so I could not tell you with confidence which one of the 3 is actually in first place. (I have put the numbers in bold according to this priority dryfrost > BOM > avg but this ranking is very subjective).
  12. Weekend 23–26/11/2017 Ranking Title Weekend admissions % change from last weekend Total admissions Week 1 Καζαντζάκης (Kazantzakis) [GR] 58,080 N/A 58,080 1 2 Murder on the Orient Express 32,271 -45.3% 233,042 3 3 Justice League 20,997 -66.5% 113,015 2 4 Happy Family 5,655 -48.9% 27,910 3 5 Το τελευταίο σημείωμα (The Last Note) [GR] 5,029 -63.9% 186,074 5 6 Gnome Alone 3,415 -38.1% 26,298 4 7 Happy End [French–German–Austrian] 3,258 -50.6% 11,939 2 8 Thor: Ragnarok 2,869 -71.3% 158,377 4 9 The Killing of a Sacred Deer 2,811 -60.3% 35,972 4 10 Marrowbone [English-language Spanish] 2,649 N/A 2,649 1 Source: http://flix.gr/news/box-office-23112017.html The box office may have been busy elsewhere but coming off last week's holiday, Greek cinemas were noticeably more quiet, even with the arrival of 'Kazantzakis'. The film scored the biggest opening of the year (as yet) for a Greek film. It was less than half of 'El Greco' (141,585 admissions), which opened in 2007, and lower than 'God Loves Caviar' (85,115 admissions), which opened in 2012, both from the same director. With three more Greek films coming out this year: Θησαυρός (Treasure) – comedy, December 7 Πολυξένη (Polyxeni) – historical drama, December 14 Τζαμάικα (Jamaica) – dramedy, December 21 'Kazantzakis' has few chances of a long run. Anything above 200K admissions and up to 250K admissions should be satisfactory. We now move on to 'Justice League' which dropped precipitously from its middling debut and actually recorded a worse drop than 'Batman v Superman' (-66.5% vs -65.7%). By the looks of it, it may not even manage to top 'Thor 3', since it is already 10K admissions behind through the same point in its run. 'Orient Express' held better than most other films this weekend. It has already done an impressive job and, in fact, 50% drops from now on could push it past 300K admissions. We will keep our eyes open for what happens next, but it is a certainty that it will surpass 'It' and reaching around 280K admissions is a foregone conclusion. Three minor openers scored 2,649, 2,011 and 1,994 admissions respectively. 'The Last Note' continues, remarkably, to follow an identical path to 'With Heart & Soul', which had reached 185,464 admissions through the same point in its run. Therefore it seems that a total just above or just below 200K admissions seems likely. 'Thor 3' has now moved ahead of 'Iron Man 2', thus ranking 6th among the 17 MCU films released so far. The only other it could surpass is last fall's 'Doctor Strange' (169K admissions) although it is rather unlikely. Other films have been quite unremarkable: 'The Killing of a Sacred Deer' will probably surpass 'Dogtooth' but not 'The Lobster' (both from the same director). Despite the sharp drop from last week, business remained significantly higher than last November throughout all 4 weekends of the month. The year-to-date is still 1% behind 2015, on par with 2012 and far ahead of 2013 or 2014, however, in comparison to 2016, it has managed to cut the difference down from -6% at the end of October to -2.7% by the end of November (which is not even over yet technically). In addition to that, next month has 5 full weekends so by the looks of it the year may manage to top 10 million admissions after all.
  13. Friend of mine said the same. Don't really get it. I mean, how is it different from Guardians of the Galaxy, Ant-Man or the humour found in other Marvel films? Maybe there wasn't as much of this type of humour in the other Thor films but Marvel has become incresaingly more comical lately anyway...
  14. Final NA total: ~$305M OS: $540-550M So yeah, around $850M WW
  15. Avengers: Infinity War Solo: A Star Wars Story The Incredibles 2 Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom
  16. @Jay Hollywood thanks for the perspective. I did feel like this was bad but I didn't realise it was so bad.
  17. Weekend 16–19/11/2017 Ranking Title Weekend admissions % change from last weekend Total admissions Week 1 Justice League 62,658 N/A 62,658 1 2 Murder on the Orient Express 58,950 -16.2% 173,734 2 3 Το τελευταίο σημείωμα (The Last Note) [GR] 13,915 -37.4% 172,732 4 4 Happy Family 11,062 +18.5% 21,410 2 5 Thor: Ragnarok 10,006 -62.8% 150,709 3 6 Jigsaw 7,802 -39.4% 32,985 2 7 The Killing of a Sacred Deer 7,075 +4.6% 30,248 3 8 Happy End [French–German–Austrian] 6,591 N/A 6,591 1 9 Gnome Alone 5,520 -14.8% 22,320 3 10 The LEGO Ninjago Movie 4,910 -28.6% 45,719 4 Source: http://flix.gr/news/box-office-16112017.html We witnessed a fair amount of surprises this weekend at the Greek box office. In general, the 17 November holiday (schools and and universities are closed), which fell on a Friday this year, helped boost earnings. Cumulative admissions were 206,306, which is the second best number for the year, following the first weekend of January! 'Justice League' opened to lackluster numbers, much lower than 'The Dark Knight', 'The Dark Knight Rises' and 'Batman v Superman'. It was actually very close to 'Suicide Squad's opening last year (61,555 admissions) and less than the 4-day (Friday-to-Monday) opening of 'Batman Begins' back in 2005 – 70,000 admissions. It still scored the best superhero opening of 2017, slightly above 'Ragnarok'. Chances of reaching 200K admissions are not very high. Superhero openings (since 2003) Rank Title Opening weekend Total Release date 1 Spider-Man 3 159,000 366,987 03/05/07 2 Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice 122,428 276,311 24/03/16 3 Captain America: Civil War 101,800 215,155 05/05/16 4 Spider-Man 2 100,000* 385,700 07/07/04 5 The Dark Knight 100,000 339,520 17/07/08 6 Avengers: Age of Ultron 94,250 224,334 30/04/15 7 Deadpool 77,774 217,832 18/02/16 8 The Avengers 75,755 242,565 26/04/12 9 The Dark Knight Rises 74,530 346,585 21/08/12 10 Iron Man 3 66,278 206,006 25/04/13 11 Hancock 64,603 129,239 18/09/08 12 Justice League 62,658 16/11/17 *this number is an estimate. the official 5-day number (Wednesday-to-Sunday) is 127,500 admissions 'Murder on the Orient Express' saw an amazing hold and was very close to retaining first place. It scored the second-biggest second weekend of 2017, but it certainly deserves more credit than that, because the first place goes to the second weekend of 'The Fate of the Furious', which opened on Easter weekend, which is a very quiet weekend and usually leads to rebound second weekend anyway. If this hold for 'Orient Express' was not purely because of the holiday, but due to word of mouth, I think that it has chances of appraoching 300K admissions. 250K admissions are a given at this point. Greek film 'The Last Note' continues to follow an identical trajectory to 'With Heart & Soul', a film by the same director that opened in October 2009 and reached 173,328 admissions by the end of its fourth weekend. Its run is basically over since 'Kazantzakis' opens next week, a Greek film about an important Greek poet. Historical dramas are often very successful but not always. It is hard to predict how well this film will do, but it has the same director as 'El Greco' (767K admissions), which is also a historical drama. This does not mean much in terms of chances for commercial success, as we have seen before with uber-hit 'Touch of Spice' (1.3M admissions) and the mediocre run of 'Mythopathy' (134K admissions). 'Happy Family' saw an increase in its second weekend, as did 'The Killing of a Scared Deer'. 'Thor 3' was the one film that plummeted despite the holiday, probably due to the opening of 'Justice League'. Nevertheless, it has crossed 150K admissions, it has surpassed both predecessors and it has also achieved a higher multiplier than both of them. It is about to surpass 'Iron Man 2' (154K admissions) and the question is whether it can beat 'Doctor Strange's 169K-admission total. In other news, 'Despicable Me' finally crossed 300K admissions. It is now at 302,285 admissions and still has chances of beating 'Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales' (309.7K admissions). It is very likely to top 'Ice Age 4' (305.4K admissions) and rank 7th among all-time animated films.
