  1. If FD follows Inside Out's trajectory, it can make it to £45.2M actually. And it has been holding better than IO, so who knows...
  2. New films released this weekend: Finding Dory Jason Bourne Sing Street Éperdument [French] Camino a La Paz [Argentinian] Although I believe there is no doubt that 'Finding Dory' will make big splash into first place this weekend, it is worth noting that the 'Bourne' franchise hasn't exactly been unsuccessful in Greece either. I estimate that the original sold north of 140K admissions back in late 2002 (maybe even 150K admissions). The sequel and threequel both increased compared to their immediate predecessor, but only by a little (153K and 160.4K resectively). The fourth one was however, a massive disappointment, opening to 6.2K admissions and ending with 17.4K admissions. I wonder how big the fifth one will be although it does seem to be a return to form for the franchise. The fact that part of the movie plot occurs in Greece may definitely increase awareness and popularity, but even so, I don't think it can stand a chance against our forgetful blue friend.
  3. Dory fell 48% on 3-day wknd but had a huge Monday for a £2M long-wknd cume. http://www.screendaily.com/news/finding-dory-retains-uk-lead-as-suicide-squad-rumbles/5108871.article?blocktitle=LATEST-UK-BOX-OFFICE-NEWS&contentID=40073
  4. Germany and Italy will be huge for Dory cuz autumn releases do massive business there.
  5. I don't really have the time to track presales so I can't say. I also doubt they would indicate anything relevant for an animated film in a country where walk-ups make up a huge amount of the business. @Joel M do u have any input?
  6. Box Office Mojo and Screen Daily are reporting a $7.53M final weekend tally for Dory and an OS cume of $451.15M, so actuals must have come in way higher than estimates ($6.1M).

I think the film exceeded even the most optimistic expectations. It seems like DC is generally more popular in Greece, whereas Marvel has made quite an effort to expand its fan base, with mixed results. The MCU hasn't managed to open an original film higher than 'Suicide Squad', although 'Iron Man' opened to 61,400 admissions back in 2008. The only other original superhero film to have opened higher is 'Deadpool' (77,774 admissions), although I bet the first 'Spider-Man', for which we do not have any data, also opened higher than 'Suicide Squad'. It could just be that the marketing is better too – I won't rule that out. This opening is also the biggest opening for a DC film not featuring Batman. Its opening day brought in about 24K viewers, a much higher proportion of the weekend total than either 'BvS' or 'Civil War'. [UPDATE 2: Each day's tally dropped from the previous day – even Saturday] so I imagine this can't be good for the long-term prospects of the film, combined with the presumably mediocre word of mouth. Then we had 'Café Society' earn second place and push last weekend's champion, 'Secret Life of Pets', to third place. The success can definitely be attributed to Woody Allen's popularity, to some extent, although a success of this magnitude was enabled by the good timing, since everyone is slowly returning back from their vacation and and indulging in their routine habits. I can't say I saw this coming in any way though... The film has potential to reach 100K admissions, but I am not aware about possible competition in the coming weeks. Last but not least, it achieved a 777-admission screen average, which we definitely haven't seen in a long time. 'Pets' dropped very little and under other circumstances, I would definitely expect a film like this to reach 200K admissions, although with the numbing effect of 'Dory', which arrives next weekend, anything can happen. Similarly with 'Ice Age 5'; after weeks of big drops, it finally stabilised in the past couple of weeks and now even increased, although whether that trajectory can be maintained is under severe doubt. 'Quo Vado?', on the other hand, has genuinely exceeded every expectation and I don't think it will slow down abruptly over the next few weeks. I still think 100K admissions is a bit too far away but there is no doubt that it has already been a huge sleeper hit. 'The Whole Truth' and 'Death on the Nile' both had respectable screen averages, whereas 'Mechanic 2' struggled significantly and actually opened lower than its predecessor (14,196 admissions in January 2011). 'Anime nere' and 'Me Before You' both found themselves in the Top 10, merely because of too many big drops across the board, but otherwise their totals are nothing to celebrate. Can't wait for 'Dory', which arrives this Friday. I have literally been waiting for this moment all year. Anything lower than 350K admissions for me will be a disappointment and I think it is about a time an animated film crossed 400K admissions. The current record-holder is 'Ice Age 3' (381K admissions), followed by 'Ice Age 2' (350-360K admissions) and 'Finding Nemo' (334K admissions – up to 362K when including the 3D re-release). In the absence of an unlikely newsflash with 'Dory's opening day tally or a dollar figure for the opening weekend from Deadline, I will be back next Monday for the usual weekend results. [UPDATE: With 2/3rds of the year behind us, 2016 has a comfortable lead of about 7.9% over the first 8 months of 2015 (when comparing only weekend admissions). I can see this lead being sustained through the rest of the year even if it potentially narrows by the year's end. Interestingly, we haven't seen cumulative weekend admissions as high as this one's (158,170) since late March, when DC's own 'BvS' opened (total weekend admissions were 208,613).]
  8. From ScreenDaily: It posted chart-tipping bows of $1.4m, $600k and $400k in Sweden, Norway and Denmark, respectively, while it retained the top spot in the UK as it reached a local tally of $46.8m.
  9. New film released this weekend: Suicide Squad Mechanic: Ressurection The Whole Truth Café Society Re-releases: Death on the Nile The Last Emperor [Chinese–British–Italian] I expect 'SLOP' to remain in top with a small drop, before it gets obliterated next week by 'Dory'. Comparing to 'Guardians of the Galaxy' and 'Ant-Man', I would expect 'Suicide Squad' to open around 20K admissions. However, I will give it an unlikely upper limit of 40K admissions, just because of the appeal this has had in many regions of the world at a signifcantly higher level than either of the previous two films I mentioned.
  10. Just so that I can preliminarily cry if necessary, may I ask if there's a chance SLOP beats Dory's OW?
  11. A respectable opening in each country would be at least: $1.1M in Denmark $1.3M in Sweden $1M in Norway $0.7M in Finland

Russia was the prime example that Eastern Europe would devour this film, but Greece has now provided further evidence of this trend. 'Pets' posted the second biggest animated weekend of 2016, only behind 'Ice Age 5', and higher than known brands such as 'Kung Fu Panda 3' and 'Angry Birds'. Of course, the opening is not exceptional for an animated film (ranks somewhere in the Top 30, but lower than #20). For a film opening in mid-August, though, the opening was satisfactory. It now hopes to garner as much box office gold as possible before 'Dory' strikes in one-and-a-half weeks. Regarding other newcomers, 'Queen of the Desert' achieved nothing particularly notable but it did finish ahead of the rest of the pack. 'Anime nere' achieved an 800+ admission screen average, besting all new movies. As for holdovers, there were very decent holds across the board – not a surprise since last weekend hit rock bottom. 'Quo Vado?' continued its sensational run, significantly buoyed by the open-space summer theaters that sprout all around Greece, and has now surpassed 50K admissions. It remains to be seen if the Italian record-breaker can make it to 100K (very unlikely), but even having reached this far was totally unforeseeable. Well done. Other holdovers also held decently, with 'Ice Age 5' being a big exception. No doubt 'Pets' ate into its audience. If the fivequel follows its predecessor's trajectory (unlikely with 'Dory' in the horizon), it could reach 213K admissions, but every weekend the estimate falls lower and lower so don't hope for much.
  13. As long as Dory holds well - 20% drop or less, I'm happy

As expected, this weekend was the lowest of the summer, with 44K admissions, and the second lowest of the year, after Easter's dismal 20.5K-admission total. Monday's holiday did nothing to reverse that trend, although I don't have enough information from previous summer Mondays to tell if this holiday made it worse or not. 'Quo Vado?' made it to the top this week! In the past year, we had 'Worlds Apart' open at #1 and then return to #1 on its 4th weekend, while 'Nice Guys' reached #1 only on its 2nd weekend. 'Quo Vado?' has definitely shown impressive holding power (undoubtably due to word of mouth) and has been incresing its screen count (from 13 to 20 to 24 screens) so far. I would remain fairly confident that it will have a long run, but there are so many new films coming out this weekend that I wouldn't be surprised if its distributor removed it from theaters to accommodate for whatever random flick they naively bought the rights to. 'Ice Age' finally had a decent hold, although the arrival of 'Secret Life of Pets' next weekend is likely to result in some collateral damage. In general, the holdovers either did horribly or very very well, but in any case, their totals are too disappointing for me to devote more than one line in this post. Same for this week's openers: completely boring, I have nothing to say. Next week, expect 'Secret Life of Pets' to make some waves, although the degree of that is debatable as summer holidays are still in full force and 'Finding Dory' is coming out in two weeks.
  15. Big drop for SLOP, even bigger for SS. Any particular reason?
  16. Germany and Italy are not the only countries left. The rest that haven't opened could defo provide another $20M, if not more.
  17. $13.5M for SP and $13.4M for SS http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/weekend-box-office-sausage-party-919335?utm_source=twitter
  18. Unfortunately, I have a feeling SLOP might beat DM2. (not that I care about DM2, but that means it will beat IO, TJB and DP and rank #3 for 2016)
  19. It had a great hold last weekend. As for this weekend, unfortunately we may have to wait til Tuesday for any news, since Monday is a public holiday. I won't rule out a first-place finish since no new films are likely to open big and 'Me Before You' could drop more than 'Quo Vado?'.
  20. I do update the title usually when there is any news. The problem is that no one has posted here anything since the 28th of June.
