  1. Disney now owns the four biggest 2016 films worldwide. Does any of you think SS or SLOP have chance of entering the Top 4? Cuz I can't imagine a scenario in which they will.
  2. It didn't overperform domestically. It did well but certainly nothing outside the expected average range.
  3. Uh, guys... I think what nilephelan is saying is that s/he IS trusting to run predictions and feed her/him numbers. And we're doing it for nilephelan without getting paid.
  4. New films released this weekend: Ocho apellidos catalanes [Spanish] La vache [French-Algerian] Sin hijos [Argentinian-Spanish] Highway to Hellas [German/Greek/English-laguage German] La vie très privée de Monsieur Sim [French] Desde allá [Spanish] Re-releases: L'homme qui ment [French-Czechoslovakian] Marcelino pan y vino [Spanish] One-Eyed Jacks This weekend seems to be the get-rid-of-all-these-foreign-films-that-no-one-is-gonna-watch weekend. I forgot to say earlier, but this Monday is a religious holiday in Greece (Dormition of the Virgin Mary). If it wasn't enough that August is a pretty slow month for the box office anyway, this three-day weekend everyone is guaranteed to be at some beach or visting relatives at their villages so expect box office receipts to plunge. I'm still not sure it can beat the yearly low of 20K admissions observed on Easter weekend, but it should get close, probably somewhere around last year's 33K admissions.
  5. Way worse Wed-to-Thu drop than BvS, CACW and DP. Slightly better than Apocalypse and a couple of percentage points worse than GotG. All is pointing at a mid 40s 2nd weekend. Also, when comapring Thu gross to Thu previews from a week ago, GotG dropped 32% whereas SS has dropped about 60%. Deadline is still saying $51-54M whereas boxoffice.com says $38.5M. At least THR says $47-54M so they won't embarass themselves too much. I do wish boxoffice.com's prediction comes true, but realistically speaking (and based on the abundance of evidence that some seem to be ignoring), this will not do more than $47M and very likely below $45M.
  6. And were there no such deals for movies in the past? How does this piece of information make SS a unique situation compared to deals/discounts for previous movies?
  7. The part that appeases me? Drop on Saturday comapred to Fri (even when you remove Thu previews), bigger drop than GotG on Sunday, bigger on Monday, bigger on Wednesday. Only Tue had a a bigger increase than GotG and that's because Tuesdays have become inherently stronger year after year. Don't tell me that I'm being selective when you're the one who has no evidence. In any case, we'll talk on Saturday AM when we know the Fri gross. I don't have to prove you wrong if I can just wait for the numbers.
  8. For anyone hoping for a $50M+ 2nd wknd, SS just dropped 32% on Wed, i.e. only a couple of percentage points less than BvS, CACW and Apocalypse, way worse than Deadpool and – most importantly – way worse than GotG (26%). The signs were there since Saturday.
  9. stupid Illumination... I really hopre it's just a phase... tbh even DWA seemed to be outdoing Disney-Pixar for a while (in WW terms) but I'm glad it's over now... Illumination could be the same. these are only its first 5 years, wait til the Despicable/Minions franchise is done and we'll see if they can survive.
  10. Deadline can disagree all it wants. It won't be their first or their last miscalculation. The hilariously positive article on SS's Tue gross shows how ridiculously optimistic they are. Just tell them to wait for the Wednesday drop.
  11. Let's face it: there is no scenario in which Suicide Squad earns above $50m on its second weekend. Some things just can't happen.
  12. Exactly the same drop as Inside Out last year (51%). Way better than the £3.6M estimated yesterday.
  13. Weekend 04-07/08/2016 Ranking Title Weekend admissions % Change from last weekend Total admissions Week 1 Me Before You 11,254 N/A 11,254 1 2 Quo Vado? [Italian] 10,050 -10.7% 28,145 2 3 Ice Age: Collision Course 6,511 -45.1% 171,928 4 4 A Bigger Splash [English-language Italian–French] 5,389 N/A 5,389 1 5 All Roads Lead to Rome 4,073 N/A 4,073 1 6 Cien años de perdón [Spanish–Argentinian] 3,134 -56.6% 14,069 2 7 Un homme à la hauteur [French] 2,854 -40.9% 29,728 3 8 Eye in the Sky 2,427 N/A 2,427 1 9 Storia d'amore [Italian] 2,371 N/A 2,371 1 10 Star Trek Beyond 2,101 -44.2% 25,417 3 Source: http://flix.gr/news/box-office-04082016.html I finally made a reasonably accurate prediction for once (not bragging at all, as you can see), since 'Me Before You' did come on top and finished with slightly more than 11K admissions. It really isn't an opening to wish for, but the film could benefit from word of mouth if it manages to survive the torrent of new releases flooding theaters over the next two weeks. Most impressively, Italian comedy 'Quo Vado?' achieved a minuscule drop of which the likes we haven't seen all summer with the exception of 'Nice Guys' and even that film plummeted 82% on its third weekend (after losing 60% of its screens). I'm hoping for a more interesting run for 'Quo Vado?' although it is quite unlikely. The 'Ice Age' franchise has definitely reached a new low as the fourth sequel has shown little recovery from its previous weekends of free fall. Its fourth weekend is half that of its predecessor and, even if it follows 'Continetnal Drift's trajectory from now on (very generous projection), it will only make it to about 218K admissions. I have started feeling that my initial 200K-admission prediction was actually quite accurate! Other newcomers were not particularly notable, although 'A Bigger Splash' and 'Storia d'amore' both achieved per-screen averages above 500 admissions. Holdovers also dropped significanlty, although there were some drops of less than 50%. Next week will see 9 new entries (including 2 re-releases) so expect a bloodbath.
  14. As others have said, extremely bad ER compared to 2003 and the general recession + Brexit after-effects are not helping. Awaiting numbers from Germany, Italy and Greece, which I personally think will be very good and possibly above Nemo cuz Dory will be released there in the fall, when cinemas are busier.
  15. Huge £4.7m opening day for Suicide Squad in the UK, biggest opening Friday ever in August. Ian Sandwell (@ian_sandwell)
  16. New films released this weekend: Me Before You Storia d'amore [Italian] A Bigger Splash [English-language Italian–French] Eye in the Sky All Roads Lead to Rome I'm betting 'Me Before You' tops the weekend but don't expect much more than 10K admissions.
  17. 7-day total for TS3 was about £21M so we can expect Dory to finish around £56M if the trajectory stays the same. In any case, I don't see how reaching £50M would be a big problem, even if it drops big this week because of SS.
