I doubt Disney's waiting for the Avatar sequels, especially since Rob Marshall already has an underwater sequence in his film that already looks pretty solid judging off the trailer, and there's already casting rumors for Ariel and Ursula Little Mermaid will likely be the December 2021 movie.

I don't think this is going to stick. It's probably just Fox playing musical chairs before the merger happens, as well as spreading word that this won't be an Oscar contender this year. Disney will probably move it somewhere else on the schedule later in the year. I can see this opening in November or December in limited release.
