  1. Target has already posted a shipping date for Coco on Blu Ray. It remains to be seen if it's accurate or not.
  2. Any thoughts on whether Paddington's release will cause it to shed a bunch? I know Paddington is live action but it's hitting in that same age demographic.
  3. Coco and Ferdinand overall numbers so close even with Ferdinand holding over 1000 theaters more. Also Coco's PTA still above Ferdinand. I'm surprised that Ferdinand is still holding so many theaters this weekend.
  4. As an artist, I'm gonna say this is not entirely true. There are actual objective criteria that art can be judged on. For example, taking a painting and analyzing its use of composition and form. There IS a baseline for what is considered good form and composition even if most people aren't aware of why something looks better or worse. You can also measure how well it uses value and colour. And absolutely anatomy. That's not to say you can't have something that does all of these things well and still isn't appealing for some other reason - like say, subject matter - but that doesn't change the fact that there are objective facts one can utilize to examine a piece of art. Of course not everyone is going to like the work of a particular artist for whatever reason, but your dislike doesn't make good anatomy or layout somehow bad. The same is true for movies. For example, a movie may have great composition. It may have very effective use of CGI. The make-up and props might be great. Does this mean the movie as a whole is great? Not necessarily. But also doesn't make the good things in a movie bad. It just means the movie couldn't effectively use those good things or that the good things don't outweigh other bad things.
  5. So, I'm curious if there's any thoughts on whether the current political climate may have been unfavourable to Coco? Obviously I think the biggest problem was just competition (and that Disney missed out on advertising to a lot of the adult audience who are Pixar fans), but after seeing a lot of specifically negative commentary about the latino characters in the movie, I'm wondering if there was any effect? I honestly expected Moana to go lower because of the polynesian characters but was pleasantly proven wrong on that count. But it is also true that most Americans probably don't even really know much about various polynesian cultures at all which makes it different but not necessarily with a negative connotation for much of the US audience. Currently and for the last couple of years we've been getting the latino=bad message shoved in our faces via the current political climate shifts. I know several people in Kentucky who definitely would not take their kids to see a movie about Latinos even if the kids wanted to see it, especially nowadays. I love Coco's unashamed portrayal of Mexican culture and the way it uses Spanish without need for clarification but I fear that those factors might also have been off-putting for American audiences right now.
  6. Perplexed at that estimated Coco Sunday drop. It doesn't seem to make sense at all. Though anectodal, I'm really thinking that Disney really should have worked a bit harder to advertise this because a lot of people I've spoken to barely know it's out right now and normally Pixar movies have a stronger word of mouth in the fantasy/sci-fi crowd I usually deal with. Everyone we've taken to it enjoyed it a lot, but most of the people I know have reached the point where the showings are so hard to get to now that they're just waiting for the streaming/blu ray release. I will say it's hard to dismiss the possibility that the current political climate is also having a slight negative effect on it. People seem to have little problem going onto Disney's Vevo and other youtube accounts to talk about how this movie should be banned in America for having Mexican characters and that's the sort of dialogue I don't think I've ever seen for other Pixar/Disney films.
  7. From what I've been reading, it seems to make sense. Basically monsters are just the extreme expression of how men often are toward women anyway and making them monsters in a romance sense gives the women in the stories (and the readers) more control over the whole narrative? Something along those lines. For queer folks I think it's more that we're used to being characterized as weird or monstrous ourselves so it's just carrying that to the logical extreme.

  9. I'm not talking about fanfiction. I'm talking about actual books dating back before the internet. Not gonna try to explain. If I find the article I'll link it.
  10. Wait, does someone here seriously think Shape of Water is bestiality? I really hope they don't enjoy any kind of cross-species romances involving fantasy creatures (like elves or mermaids) or aliens, cuz this is pretty much in that same category.
  11. Technically the Muslim guy was also Asian (if you're talking about Bodhi). Also you left out Cassian, whose actor is from Mexico.
  12. I think a lot of Coco's problem comes from the fact that it lost so many theaters. It's down a lot from both Moana and Tangled in terms of theater count at the same time in their run. The fact that it still has a higher PTA than Ferdinand despite the fact that Ferdinand has a much higher TC is telling. The other sad part is that many folks I know who have been putting off seeing it in this area now no longer have options to see it in this area, as it's going down to only one theater in a 20 mile radius this week and most people won't drive too far out of their way unless they REALLY want to see something.
  13. I'm amused that it's lost so many theaters and yet its PTA is really good compared to Ferdinand. Star Wars and Jumanji are taking a big bite out of its legs though.
  14. Looks like Coco's dropping out of three more of the theaters in this area and will be down to only one screen by the 28th. The next nearest after that is actually across the state lines. I suppose it's a bit much to hope that they might ditch Ferdinand instead if its PTA is too low.
  15. It's getting more of a hit from losing theaters, I think. When we tried to take my roommate's nieces to see it today, it was very hard to find anywhere playing it and the theater we did find only had two showings. The theater we were in for it though was small but completely sold out. We got there 40 min early and because of the assigned seating we had to sit in the front row. As far as I could tell the only empty seat was beside us in the front row. I'm hoping Coco's PTA will be good, at least.
  16. Given that it just came out last week and Coco came out a month ago, it's certainly not making an encouraging amount of 'more' than Coco. Ferdinand's numbers as a holiday release are not encouraging for its box office haul.
  17. Btw all toy sales have been dipping recently because of Toys R Us filing for bankruptcy (and good gods did they make some bad decisions and are making even more bad decisions already when they've had a reprieve once already). It's apparently a major point of contention to people who are into Transformers collecting.
  18. I wonder if deadline was overcorrecting with Coco after having it come in over their estimates several times. Of course their calculation problem was sunday drops not friday jumps. It'll be interesting to see how it plays out, though I really hope that number goes up at least a little bit.
  19. It seems to be holding really well this weekend. I'm hoping if Ferdinand's numbers continue to drop the way they're trending that Coco will surge ahead of it again next week (barring more theater drops, of course)
  20. Man, I knew Coco was going to lose a lot of screens but I was still hoping it might be able to go over Ferdinand this weekend, especially if Ferdinand got a 50% or more drop from last weekend.
  21. I expect it'll do fine on the weekend though. A lot of folks in my group have been waiting to see it but are still caught up in Christmas prep so we can't arrange a time good for everyone. It'll be a lot easier when working folks are out on break (though several people are working Christmas eve). This is a terrible time of year for anyone in retail.
  22. Hm, based on the trailer, I don't think they're really catering to men, but I wonder if that's the point. If they can keep budget low and cater to a female audience, it'll probably do fairly well with legs. Am I remembering wrong or is this supposed to be a sort of side-quel that's going to be leading to a team up movie? If so, feels like they might be trying to appeal to a female audience in hopes that they can carry some of them over into a crossover/team up
