  1. I’m sure while they are counting all the money this movie is making and prepping the sequel, they will give a sh*t that you think it deserves an asterisk.
  2. I liked how it was done. It shows the movie was factual, as opposed to just "loosely based". Watch the feature length documentary on the guy called "The Contientious Objector". It was made several years ago, and having seen it I can tell you that it looks like everything in the movie seems to be true. In fact, I'd say it's the first movie I've seen where I thought they held back on heroics. I'll agree that the actual footage adds a lot of emotion. But I don't agree with the manipulation part. Great movie though!!!!
  3. Hacksaw looking good at +50%! Saw it again last night. Anyone who hasn't seen this movie... you are missing out. I hope they don't start yanking it from theaters. If it sticks around through Christmas, it should get a ton of Oscar nominations.
  4. I could care less about DS. What I'm excited about is the Hacksaw Ridge hold. That seems to be a pretty good drop.
  5. Saw it last night. Amazing movie. 20 years ago, this movie would hover around the $15mm mark for several weeks and easily crack the $100mm mark. But movies don't really work that way anymore and it will start to lose theaters after next week and probably finish around $60-70mm. I hope I'm wrong and it catches on. I'm really interested in seeing yesterday's actuals. I saw it at 6:45 last night and it was packed. Very unusual for the theater I go to.
  6. Halloween, Salems Lot (1979) and The Thing are the movies that scared me the most as a kid. Halloween is my favorite because of its simplicity. Before all the brother/sister crap and even worse, the Thorn garbage... Halloween was about a killer who escaped and came home. He picks Laurie Strode because she just happened to be the first person he saw (through the door of his house). Fate... Pure and simple. There is NO other reason that he follows her. It started so many trends, they are too numerous to list. But what a classic. Favorite scenes for me? -hedge -out the school window -standing amongst the hanging laundry -background doorway -the slow reveal behind Laurie -sitting up. -breaking into the closet. Terrifying. Least favorite scene: no reason to take his mask off. Man... What a great movie. And with almost no blood!!!
  7. I think people are missing the boat on this one by a long shot. Only "high teens" opening? No way. This is movie is still 8 weeks away, and reviews are already coming in and are off the charts. I'm predicting $40mm plus opening and over $200mm.
  8. I'd agree with everything you say except Rocky Balboa loses a half point for me. Wanna know why? Because of that 30 second scene in the bar where that girl comes over and tries to get him to buy her a beer. "Know wha' I sayin' foo? You ain't no betta then me!" Ugggg. It hurts just to type it. She is so unbearable that it takes a full 2 minutes for me to get over how awful she is. Then they show her a couple more times. Bad idea. Other then that... It's great.
  9. Had American Sniper been a 2015 movie, it would be my BEST of the year. So to each his/her own I guess.
  10. I couldn't agree with your comment more. I loved Creed. But I cannot say it's better then 2, 3, 4 or 6. I can say that for me it was nowhere near the original. But it's not fair to compare. Rocky 1 is to me a perfect movie. I also wasn't pulling for Adonis quite like I was pulling for Rocky in the original. Adonis at least had money and security. If boxing doesn't work out, he has something else to fall back on, though certainly not his preference. If Rocky isn't on his feet at the end of the 15th round in Rocky... He's still basically a bum. But again, I thought Creed was fantastic.
  11. Wish I could have been around during the original's theatrical run. The movies elements have been copied to death, but I wonder how the initial audiences responded when Gonna Fly Now started playing? Or when he goes down and struggles to get back up? I saw on YouTube a Halloween audience reaction clip from 1978. I wish there was one for Rocky!
  12. Very true. But the original four grossed between $285-$460 million in today's dollars. If it can motivate even a portion of that audience to get out, plus the new generations, it could be a smash. $100 million over 5 days though? Probably not.
  13. Seriously... Who in their right mind ever believed Rocky 7 would have a 94 on RT? If you raised your hand you are a liar. And this is heavily weighted by top critics so it's not just the fanboy critics. I don't think it will drop much if any, and will end up in the 90s. I can't wait... But I have to see it to believe that anyone other then Stallone can get me out of my seat. With reviews like this though... It may be the one!
  14. Man... I am so amped for this movie. More then any movie in 15 years. An 88% on rotten tomatoes? Who'd have thunk it. Hope it's as good as the reviews say. Rocky is my all time favorite movie. It has been since I saw it in 1980 at 10 years old. It's one of the few movies I would call "perfect". I love all of them except V and over the years have watched them dozens and dozens of times. I have 4 kids and they love them too. They are timeless. Some of my favorite scenes: 1. Training montage in part one. It's perfect. Running the steps is my all time favorite movie moment. Name a scene in any movie where the music is as perfect as this one. 2. The fight in part 1. When he falls and crawls across the canvas refusing to stay down... The music is perfectly timed. Then Adrian closes her eyes... then opens them. Awesome. 3. The back to back training montages in 2. The kids chasing him through Philly makes the moment. 4. Rocky screaming at Mickey as he walks away after asking to be his manager. Stallone's single best acting moment to date. 5. The iconic fight in part 2. An absolute battle. "Yo Adrian... I did it!!" 6. When he looks at himself in the mirror in part 1 realizing what a loser he's become. 7. Rocky chewing out his son in Rocky 6. Great speech. 8. Rocky 4 training montage. Contrasting Drago and Rocky. Classic. 9. Thunder Lips fight in part III. 10. Rocky IV Final fight. I love it when they both lean to see each other from their stools late in the fight... Hoping the other guy's in worse shape then they are. Bonus: Adrian visiting Rocky's shithole apartment. I want to see this movie in a crowded theater so my kids can see the kind of audience reaction we used to see when the original 4 came out.
  15. Wow. With only a handful of exceptions your list is very aligned with my tastes. Nice job. Halloween... BTTF... Jaws... all top-tens for me. Here are some major omissions (unless I missed them) for me: Die Hard Unforgiven Hoosiers The Searchers Ben-hur Lethal Weapon But the biggest difference for me, is Rocky. While you have itat number 31, Rocky is number1 in my book, and about 5 miles back is number 2. I have loved Rocky since I first saw it in 1978.
  16. This may already be buried in this thread, and if so... I apologize and just ignore the post. But you can check weekend box office going back to 1960 with this link. Just change the year. http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_1970_box_office_number-one_films_in_the_United_States And how awesome for me that on my birthday, A John Wayne movie was number one. YES!!!
  17. I've been reading messages in this discussion thread as well as several other AS threads on this site. I've read numerous comments about "red state nut jobs", "idiot republicans", and so on. And how people are baffled that a movie that THEY don't approve of or like could be such a hit. A "How dare a movie that doesn't fall in line with my beliefs or agendas be such a monster hit!!??" kind of attitude. Well to me it's simple. The movie is about a man who gave up everything to protect a country he loves. To leave everything behind and go off to "hell" and serve his country and do what in his mind is in the best interest of his country and countrymen and women. While you and I sit in the safe luxury of our homes playing with our iPhones, iPads and Xboxes, this guy is one wrong step away from dying. And he kept going back.... And back.... And back.... And the scene at the garage when the soldier thanked him showed the point. He was over their watching our soldiers backs, and protecting those he could. The man saved lives, period. And to do so, he had to kill the enemy. I used to go to the movies once a week. Now I go a few times a year. Some of that is due to having a wife and 4 kids, and the busyness of life. But a lot is due to the lack of anything appealing to me anymore. If you want $9 and 3 hours of my valuable time, it better be something that I want to see. I think a lot of people feel the same way I do. And for me, this was that rare movie. The country is split down the middle on core values. This movie, like Passion, obviously tapped into one of those segments perfectly. Some people don't want to go see vulgar comedies, action movies that have been done over and over, unnecessary sequels, or movies that dwell on how "bad" our country, past presidents and military are. And those complaining about factual inaccuracies.... What a joke. Name a movie that doesn't take liberties. Did you complain when W was released? How about JFK? Or Fahrenheit 9/11? Did you bitch and moan then about how factual they were? This movie is a juggernaut and won't be going away anytime soon.
