  1. No one is saying this lol. I think she clearly has talent, she just can't maintain it throughout two hours. She is a mess, but occasionally has a very inspired moment. Here is my review: http://awardswatch.com/reviews/afi-review-angelina-jolie-pitts-by-the-sea-★★/
  2. This is a total mess but has a couple of moments of occasional genius. The direction is fine. The screenplay is a joke.
  3. Well nationwide and wide aren't synonymous. Are you in a metroplex, city or arts district?
  4. I was told by Abrahamson and A24 people that it goes nationwide this weekend.
  5. He is getting a lot of buzz. I'm pissed it is major category fraud, but it'd be super neat if he did!
  6. I'm also starting to think IO is going to falter in favor for a prestige pic.
  7. If it quietly underperformed, I'd agree. The trades really beat the hell out of it though. The BP and BD races are super fluid this year, so I don't think it'll help.
  8. I think it will get a picture nomination too, but the bad press could hurt it. Director is looking less likely because of everything and the critiques that that is the weakest elements. Daniels would be my pick. He is really killer in the role, but the category is so stacked with Spotlight likely earning two noms, Joy contending for two noms and a shitton of dudes in The Hateful Eight.
  9. Most of your locks are far from, such as Boyle in director and even Steve Jobs in picture. The supporting actor performances aren't going to get recognized in Steve Jobs because they will cause major vote splitting. Furthermore, the way the film works actually structurally disallows for a standout performance because they come and go in such measured ways. They are like a random obstacle presented for Jobs rather than a comprehensive part of his development.
  10. I'll be seeing this three days. I'm embarrassingly excited for it. If it is too through I will have infinite bragging rights because no one is expecting that. Tapleg said a while back that some industry folk dig it and there is a mixed review on letterboxd that sounde

Tapley said a while back that some industry folk dig it and there is a mixed review on letterboxd that makes it sound like something I'll love.
  12. Not this year! The best actress race is more string especially, although they both only have about 7 or 8 performance contending for now. The actor race will have more filled noms than actress though.
  13. Admittedly, my post was pompous, but we all do that from time-to-time. I just need to be able to come across more friendly in writing I suppose. Sorry if I offended anyone Regardless, Blanchett has killed it in three roles this year. She is nothing short of a revelation. <3
  14. I'm not disagreeing with Ozy's opinion on the film, just with Ozy's prediction methods. I don't remember Gravity that much at all. All I am saying is that Gravity is an "achievement" and films like that get rewarded whereas no one (or very few) is suggesting that The Martian brings anything new to the table besides being a great movie. I don't have a particular affinity for either movie, but Gravity's huge amount of nominations speaks for itself. It was a huge testemant of what can be done on he big screen and it still one of the best recieved films of the decade. This is a stronger year and if the late release films break out as many expect them to, then The Martian will get buried faster than Spotlight. And we are predicting The Oscars so we have to take personal preference out and listen to the industry and critics. I'm not disagreeing or challenging Ozy's opinion, I am just saying that predicting from the heart is pointless and that is what we all like to do, myself included. The biggest proof of this will be when The Danish Girl gets a ton of noms. :P
  15. Isn't this a board to discuss films? I don't understand how me asking someone to elaborate on why they prefer a film is so off-limits? Or even challenging tastes: I'm trying to start a conversation not be a dick, but maybe it comes off too pointed and condescending. That's isn't my intention! Like I said, I loved Truth and is higher on my list of 2015 films than Spotlight. But, when it comes to awards potentials there are no blinders for Truth. It isn't happening and I think everyone agrees with that. Now, The Martian I'll admit I might be fighting it a little too hard. ;)
  16. You do understand that your view on Gravity is not upheld by the industry or the critics? You are saying this as if they are facts but clearly don't understand how much more of a landmark Gravity was over The Martian. Just because you have a preference doesn't mean anything-- they are completely different and the races are hugely different.
  17. Woof lol. I love Truth and Cate's performance, but I can't fathom how this is justifiable.
  18. Dark comedies isn't a genre... The phrase "dark comedy" barely means anything and many have won in the past. If you want to call something a dark comedy it'd be The Martian, which you are predicting for a win with like a .01% chance of happening. I don't understand...
  19. While watching this film I was captivated but not impressed until the third act which draws some gorgeous parallels to the beginning and really illustrates the similar plights of many immigrants. This film's main selling point is charm and it had plenty to go around. Ronan and Cohen are lovely and play real, normal people, which I love. I didn't realize how much I loved this film until a couple hours after I finished it and it had left a big smile on my face. I think there is just enough beyond the surface of the cutesy, charming story to really warrant this a pretty great film.
  20. I don't either, but if it a masterpiece and everything else fails, The Revenant could surprise and this coming from someone not excited for the film at all. Amen! It is just good, unremarkable film. I don't get it...
  21. It isn't realistic either. If Joy and The Revenant falter The Big Short and Spotlight will come and save us.
  22. Cinderella, The Danish Girl, Joy, Carol, SW7 Why would The Martian get nominated here? No showy design at all.
  23. I mean, everyone knows Dark Knight was one out which is why they made the rule-- to get genre films in. I remember reading something saying ST09 was very close to a BP nom and there is a lot of speculation saying it was close to BD too.
  24. Halba, have you ever watched the Oscars? Because every comment you make is just more and more obtuse. I really don't want to give a spot to the The Marian because it is so mediocre, but out of what've I'd see an argument for it being the front runner is totally reasonable. This is a weird year. Usually there has been so much more clarity.
