  1. Maybe this is in Italy, but not in Spain. When i ws a kid, i waited more than hour queue for enter to waths Star Wars in 1978 in Madrid and i can assure you every kid were crazy with the movie. In Spain is the 8th most attended movie ever, with almost 7 million admits, so i can say here it was a cultural phenomenon...
  2. From InsideKino.de Like almost every surprise megahit - such as B. later E.T. or Titanic - Star Wars didn't set any records at the start (May 25) on Memorial Day weekend 1977, the first film wasn't even the No. 1 film in the country on the first weekend (that was The Cooked Rascal). Nevertheless, the opening week was gigantic: In only 43 cinemas (Schlitzohr was shown in 498 cinemas) $2,898,347 was grossed in the first week. To put that in today's terms: Adjusted for inflation, that would be $12,022,291 or an average of $279,589 per copy! Due to the great success, copies were constantly added over the next three months, the peak being 1,096 copies in the 13th week. The best week was week 11 when $12.5M (worth $51.8M today) was raised. On day 81, Star Wars broke $100 million as the second fastest film of all time at the time (Jaws was 59 days two years earlier). The $150 million mark fell after 121 days (40 days faster than Jaws). On December 2, 1977 Steven Spielberg congratulated George Lucas in a full-page ad in Variety on the new highest-grossing film of all time (calculated after rentals), and then the $200 million mark fell on the New Year's weekend. 20th Century Fox was soon planning a re-release in the summer of 1978 and banned all re-release of the film, but allowed any theater that still had a copy in-house to continue showing it. As a result, 38 cinemas still had the film on their schedules after 14 months. In total, the EA grossed $221,280,994 (worth $992.3 million today).
  3. In its first run Star Wars made 220 million, this equals to 1080 M not 1300. Is still much more than ESB, but not so much. Star Wars first run is in the same league than E.T. and Titanic, the great difference is many re-releases very very succesful that made it the biggest success all time domestic, because numbers of GWTW are not too clear.
  4. The real test for A2 final gross starts next tuesday, then is when we´ll start to see how stays James Cameron power in the mind of people
  5. 76 million in week 9 45 in week 14 almost 10 in 20 ...out from the world, out from all the worlds...
  6. I think is better not to start with big "locked" because can come the meltdowns, flops and tears... Let´s be cautious from now, i think is btter don´t expect much and later be happily surprised for good legs...
  7. I think it will perform well, but it seems less and less people go to cinema in Europe in the last years, even tough, from some to some a movie is capable to trascend this trend and going to a "must see" event, let´s see if Avatar will do it. In its help, i think people is "hungry" of good and epic movies, so maybe Avatar will fill this emptiness. For me the gretest will be a leggy run, in the fashion of the first Avatar, i prefer 1.8 B in this way rather than 2.5 B in a Endgame style, it´s much more fun to follow, but let´s see, only 4 days left!!!
  8. Yes, was something beyond movies, i´m agree that was something miraculous. Are very nice the stories you tell about the success worldwide, i knew something about in Afghanistan, that even being forbidden movies, Titanic was a phenomenon there, but the other stories i didn´t know but i am not totally suprised but is really cute to know. I´ve read that a french couple about 80 years old, they were to theatres the first 20 weeknds of the release consecutively to watch it. This movie has so many beautiful stories around, that for this has this legendary status. Also me have a nice story with this run, i´ve told it here before, but i tell you again. I was living in Madrid in 98 and i didn´t know much about internet and less about website focused in box office movies. I used to read a spanish magazine that monthly gave some short data about box office in Spain and USA. In that days of Titanic release, i discovered in a big store in the city centre, the american magazine Variety, where they update weekly the box office results. It was possible to "read" for free the magazines in the shop, many people use to do it, especially the most expensive, and Variety was really expensive for me. SO every sunday, that was the day when they received it, i was there no matter was doing in that moment to the store to see the box office results of Titanic every week and i was really shocked with the minimum drops it had it. They were very exciting weeks and since then i became a box office follower, later i discovered BOM, like many more, and i continued until now, but for sure, my first and best love forever in box office will be this run.
  9. Will be really hard to see again something like this, for sure, Titanic run was somthing that happens maybe once in 100 years, but, who knows, life is so wonderful because is full of surprises... A succes like Titanic today, will be US 1.2 B China 1.5 B rest of the world 2.5 B, so, more than 4 B, soemthing really Titanesque.. In some days is the 25th anniversary of the release of the hit of the hits, long life to Cameron and this kind of runs!!!
  10. Locked? I see it falling as a rock after thanksgiving, i see it 430-440 M as much,,,
  11. If the goal for Paramount is 1.5 B, they won´t stop until they´ll get it....or maybe is top 10 all time including A2...let´s see.
  12. Jpan is a good friend for extra long leggy runs, good to have news like this, almost 6 month after its release, the power of a really historic run.
  13. The end of a glorious run... Many weeks enjoying as few times in B.O. following, for me one of the top 5 most atractives runs to see. Even, after 2020, i´ve lost the faith to see gain something like this. Will we see anything like this in next years? Let´s wait, but in my opinion, each year will be harder and harder. Thanks to all the pals in this forum whice we had enjoy so much together!
  14. Ego is ego, he didn´t make more films because after Titanic and Avatar breaking all time WW BO, he wants to do it in every next movie and probably knows this is almost impossible again, and he doesn´t want to end like Spielberg, making big fails BO in their last films.
  15. Congratulations to Cptn. N.B:, finally TGM will surpass Beauty and the Beast!!
  16. Ok with the chance in Japan, there legs are infinite, but passing F7 is 40 million away, even with re-release oscars i see it extremely difficult...
