  1. I'm a film nerd and even I have no interest in it. If you've seen plenty of foreign films there's nothing all that unique about it. I feel like our culture is starting to move past the novelty of indie period gay romances like Brokeback, Carol, Call Me, etc. It's time to modernize and mainstream these ideas on screen...which is why I think Love, Simon could be a hit.
  2. Original Blade Runner had the same pacing, just a smaller story. Villenueve wasn't just trying to match up visually but tonally as well.
  3. I'd like to see Villenueve get a couple more hits under his belt so Hollywood will give him Nolan-esque carte blanche. Unfortunately this wasn't it. Still weird to me that the pretty images in the trailers didn't get more people in the theater.
  4. I don't think it does. Seems to be the opposite actually which, according to Drew, is repugnant in a world where so much police brutality occurs on an almost daily basis.
  5. No to Skyscraper, Mowgli (think this will be a huge flop), and Bohemian Rapsody. I think if it's released this year Barbie will be a hit whether we like it or not. Also Mortal Engines could be a sleeper. Ditto Slenderman which I'm surprised people here are sleeping on. Horror is big right now and people still talk about the short story and the resulting true horror story.
  6. Why do people here think this? It's an extremely popular book and a kid's flick.
  7. Sandler's not exactly over. His Netflix comedies supposedly do big numbers for them and he's doing films with Baumbach now.
  8. I'd rather see him go back to doing more serious fare like Ali or The Pursuit of Happyness or even I Am Legend (half of that movie is a great Cast Away-esque drama). He's a good actor who's lazy with his choices.
  9. Tarantino + Dicaprio + Cruise + Robbie = my ass in seat and probably many many others.
  10. I hate people who shout "social justice warrior" when anyone calls somebody or something racist, but these accusations levied toward Three Billboards are so asinine they make me relate to those alt-right nutjobs.
  11. I think there's a subsection of film people that just sneer at anything about poor country bumpkins. Same people that hate I, Tonya hate Three Billboards as well and accuse them both of being fake-deep. Why? Probably because they're comedies at their core.
  12. Nothing I dislike more in box office than when studios don't try that extra push after 95 mil.
  13. Janney's performance is so much more interesting and subtle in between the BIG moments. There's a lot going on besides bitchy abusive behavior. Metcalfe is just very good in a fairly conventional role and her character is more likable, so she'll likely win off of that based on Oscar history. They like to like the character.
  14. This is maybe literally the only place on Earth where anyone is debating whether TLJ is a financial success or not. It definitely is, no matter its mediocre legs, no matter how anyone feels about it.
  15. There Will Be Blood is a modern classic and will be taught in film schools if it isn't already.
  16. Critics loved Force Awakens too. I think the only area where critics are truly biased are the return of older franchises that many of them grew up on. Notice the remarkably good reviews for anything Star Wars (especially the prequels), Indy 4, Superman Returns, etc. They're sometimes as susceptible to nostalgia as everyone else.
  17. Agreed. Call me ignorant but I'm one of those people who believes silent performances to be far easier. That may be unfair but that's how I feel. So Hawkins, while good, doesn't cut it for me. McDormand is great but she's won already and I don't need her to be a two-time winner. And in my opinion Ronan shouldn't be nominated. Chastain and Robbie gave the two best female performances this year.
  18. They don't have to do anything. MoviePass as we know it will be gone this time next year and Cinemark will have phased out this membership program.
  19. That doesn't count. It's one movie a month and a discount on concessions. Not the same thing at all.
  20. MoviePass literally can't survive for long on their business model. And I don't buy that what they're doing is going to force theaters to change their business model. Why? Because the model doesn't work. It's economically unsustainable.
  21. That was the least shocking part given that the songs were written by the La La Land people.
