  1. Alright, disappointment time?

    Triple Threat (2019)

    triple-threat-369158l-576x0-w-a3f0929e.j

    Directed by: Jesse V Johnson

    Fight Choreography: Tim Man

Starring: Tony Jaa, Iko Uwais, Scott Adkins, Tiger Chen, Michael J White, JeeJa Yanin, Michael Bisping, Celina Jade

    Box office: Direct-to-video

My rating for this movie: ★★★½

Synopsis: A hit contract is taken out on a billionaire's daughter who is intent on bringing down a major crime syndicate. A down and out team of mercenaries must take on a group of professional assassins and stop them before they kill their target.

Could have been worse. This movie made very little sense, but we were 5 watching and I must say, it did a pretty good job at entertaining all of us. Tony Jaa's english is definitely in the "so bad it's good" category because we laughed out loud a few times. Almost every time he opened his mouth to be honest.

Was it good? Yes, I think so. Should it have been a lot better? Hell yes. It easily could and should have been an all-time classic in the genre.

The bad guys' plan is the worst plan I've ever seen. Or plans, since they had many. And they're ALL terrible. The only thing remotely interesting about this movie is the reverse double cross logic that happens... but still, it's played poorly so yeah.

    What about the fights?

I thought the fights were done really well. Few cuts, good choreography. Could have been better and longer but I was very satisfied with what we got. Each fighter had their own style, and the last fight between Tony Jaa and Scott Adkins was hella great! Scott is the man, always so impressive.

But there were way too many shoot-outs. I usually don't mind them too much but the ending shoot-out in particular was drawn out, ridiculous, and useless. By the way, is it even possible to waste JeeJa Yanin more than this movie does? While we're at it, also stop casting Celina Jade in damsel in distress roles?

  2. I watched it and it's pretty good.

Know this however: what a wasted opportunity. This movie could and should have been the holy grail of martial arts coming out in the recent years, and instead it settled for "just okay".

But there are some good fights in there. I will post a detailed review here later. I still suggest checking it out but leave your expectations at the door.

  3. More old school Jackie Chan!

    My Lucky Stars (1985)

    Directed by: Sammo Hung

Fight Choreography: Sammo Hung, Yuen Biao, Yuen Wah

Starring: Sammo Hung, Charlie Chin, Stanley Fung, Jackie Chan

    Worldwide Box office: HK $30,748,643.00

My rating for this movie: ★★★

Synopsis: Two Hong-Kong cops are sent to Tokyo to catch an ex-cop who stole a large amount of money in diamonds. After one is captured by the Ninja-gang protecting the rogue cop, the other one gets his old Orphanage gang, dubbed the “Five Lucky Stars,” to help him. They don’t like this much, but they do it.

I'm gonna go outright and say this: The whole 3 stars out of 5 I gave this movie go to the action/fight sequences, which are terrific. Typical Jackie Chan/Sammo Hung stuff, excellent. Outstanding stunts and fight choreography, as usual.

Like I said in entry #14 of my top, the rest of this movie series is quite simply, pure nonsense... and this movie is no exception. I would dare say it's the worst out of the first 3 on that front.

Poor Sibelle Hu, the cringe induced from this movie must have shattered all her teeth right off.

    But the fights are amazing!

    One sequence

This sequence is only a small part of the final fight but I thought it was hilarious (couldn't find the whole of it on youtube). The fight is between Sibelle Hu and Michiko Nishikawi. The rest of the final fight lasts, I don't know, maybe 10 minutes? And it's a big brawl between many of the martial arts stars from that period.  You can find the whole movie on dailymotion but I'm not going to link it here.

Jackie Chan as usual performs the most impressive stunts, and he does so absolutely seamlessly as usual.

I think the Russo's can really change characters around a lot.

DS went from a nobody to a well liked character due to IW.

Looking forward to the DBZ fight between Thanos and CM.

It's going to be the same thing as Thor saves Wakanda...but not the world. Thanos is so screwed...until he isn't. it's never that simple. the fact that Avengers are joined by the most powerful hero ever means there's a catch why that won't solve everything. it's writing 101. if CM can beat Thanos easily, your movie will last about 5 min. so there has to be a catch why that won't happen right away.

To be honest this is why having 'nerds' like the Russo Bros for making these films is best.

Out of likes right now but this is pretty much it (for me). Might not be everyone's cup of tea but when a movie goes full retard on what people can do (and then they don't) it gets on my nerves. I don't mean keeping a tab of exact power levels and stuff, that's just ridiculous, but respecting an overarching sense of who can do what is, in my opinion, important for internal consistency, but while never forgetting to give your characters and their growth the priority.

So basically, do what Marvel have been doing so far (mostly)

  6. Great post, and indeed it's a troublesome situation, but one that can be overcome.

There is always a vulnerability that can be exploited in a character, or a new development that changes things.

She cares for people? Put these people in a precarious position, hopefully one that can't be fixed by blowing things up.

    She's strong? Insert someone stronger.

What's her purpose, or objective? Weave that into the story. When a character has an objective, suddenly things can get complicated due to unforeseen limitations or constraints (time, place, etc)

As for the "weaker" characters, the challenge is on the screenwriters to find them something to do that matters. It's what I've always found stupid about Age of Ultron, near the beginning they attack the HYDRA stronghold and they go about it... head on. But not all Avengers are solders, you have spies in there, use them! Tony Stark throws a missile through the ground and blows up the protective sphere around the place. Wow. I can imagine 3 or 4 different ways for someone like Black Widow (accompanied by Barton?) to infiltrate the place in a cool manner that also propels her character beyond kicking people, and helps give every member of the team a way to feel unique, but no, they storm the place and beat up the bad guys with their fists. Bleh!

    sometimes?

Oh, and saw it today. Was good (7.5/10). Some things they tried fell a little flat (a few really awkward jokes and some of the supposedly dramatic scenes) but the final act worked pretty well. Though her destroying a whole Kree battleship to make a point might have been a little... well, extreme? I mean usually in these large scale battles in CBMs the opponents are dehumanized (either some kind of monsters or even robots). That ship was full of people (we saw kree on Hela). Up until now marvel always had the high ground when it came to these kinds of issues.

They were going to drop a nuclear warhead on Earth and kill everyone (or something akin to a mega-bomb, can't quite remember).

At this point I think it's safe to say that they got what was coming to them. If you go around threatening to nuke planets, you also gotta be ready to die because of retaliation.

I don't feel so good about it. I enjoyed it, most of it. Didn't like the action part. Best part Avengers.

Worst part, they messed up so many things.

     1. Was The Avengers incident not emergency?

    2. It wasn't s.h.i.e.l.d. Until Iron Man, it was strategic h... You know it.

    3. ffs it was an infinity stone. Crown jewel of Odin's treasure. Damn Odin.

    4. Like seriously? Avengers managed to come from Wakanda and find that pager of all that's happening.

Damn the more I am thinking about it, the less I like. Need to forget it like Hulk, IM 2 & IM3.

BTW just wondering, is this only superhero film where no one call hero by title. Pretty sure, didn't heard word Captain Marvel.

    1. Feige said that even though it wasn't shown (Fury calling CM) doesn't mean it didn't happen. She takes a while to arrive.

    2. Fair point but also fairly minor. I'm a SHIELD fan (tv show) and I had forgotten entirely about this...

    3. Obviously. :P

4, That sounds far-fetched indeed but we have no context so far for that scene.
