Nocturnal Animals is performing very strong at the box office currently. It could end up just shy of 4 million in just over 1,000 theaters this weekend, which could give the studio more confidence to keep widening its release in the coming weeks. That could help it secure some noms, but I dunno about Best Picture.
When I saw Hell or High Water, I was impressed by all the performances, and I was puzzled when Ben Foster, even after the film came and went, wasn't speculated as much to get a nomination as Jeff Bridges. I believe both those actors deserve nominations, and I'm glad these awards people agree!
"American Honey and Chronic over Hell or High Water and Loving? Huh! That might be something to think about..."- said by a certain percentage of Oscar voters.
I really don't like that rule at all. Yeah, it's hard for me to believe that it'll get that many votes, which would be a shame in my opinion. Best movie I've seen so far this year! (haven't seen much)
The only win I have real qualms with is Brave's win. Paranorman and Wreck-It Ralph were both much better, IMO. I can understand if the three stop-motion movies ate each other's votes, but it's almost as if the judged the cover by the book on Wreck-It Ralph. Brave was beautifully animated, but otherwise generic. Tbh, Paranorman would've gotten my Oscar.
I think Hacksaw Ridge is being underestimated here, especially after Billy Lynn received both mixed reviews to begin with, and lower scores than the WW2 drama. I guess time and box office will tell.
Especially after When Marnie Was There was nominated over The Good Dinosaur and The Peanuts Movie last year, I think anything by Ghibli would be a lock...
Your Name should definitely release next year if it wants more credibility. Next year, it definitely wouldn't be so crowded... at the moment, the only 2017 animated films that I could see definitely getting nominations are Pixar's Coco and Triplets of Belleville director Sylvian Chomet's The Thousand Miles. Most other animated films seem to be either sequels or directed towards the younger audience.
It would be great to see a non-Ghibli anime film be nominated, but I think Your Name wouldn't be able to achieve that this year.
