  2. Seriously couldn't find the box office discussion thread. @AABATTERY

  4. When does he mature? Do you just assume that because The reason why Sebastian's shallow character is a problem is because the movie itself is shallow. I think the movie intended a lot more sympathy for him that frankly isn't earned.
  5. I originally gave the movie an A, maybe because of the Very pretty movie, I have to say. Might still be an A, just based on how skillfully it was put together.
  6. Nope, not buying it. He seems genuinely unhappy playing the keyboard in front of thousands of screaming fans.
  7. That's all well and good, but these characters still rub me the wrong way. Sebastian blatantly ignores instructions from his boss and gets fired. Doesn't seem to recognize that he did something wrong. Yammers on and on about jazz, and yet is played by Ryan Gosling. Gets a great fucking deal that fits his talent, and is still moping around. He should be fucking happy! If you're a millennial stuck in a crappy place, you should resent this guy.
  8. "Not going to sell out!" I actually liked this musical when I was a teenager and had no idea what they were talking about. Probably still like it, actually, but not in the same way.
  9. You didn't get that feeling when he's grousing about playing commercially viable music with John Legend? For a great wage, mind you.
  10. Oh yeah. The one woman play. They seriously should have made that a memorable part of the movie, because I completely forgot about it. Why not show 10 minutes of that stuff? Let's see how hard she worked. But no, we don't get to see it, and then she just gives up and moves back in with her folks. What the hell? For all we know, that was the right decision. So beyond that, I'm not getting why these two narcissists have an interesting plight. They actually seem to be doing pretty well.
  11. If it's going to be fantasy, go all fantasy. Don't detail Mr. Seb's compensation package. Seriously, what the hell? Don't have him mouth off to his boss like a fucking twit, and possibly make the audience root against him. And even fantasy women have more personality than Mia in La La Land. Such as literally any Disney protagonist.
  12. When Disney animated features have more reality, maybe you're doing something wrong.
  13. Exactly! Mia is just a stupid helpless waif. I'd like her more if she just gave any thought about what more she had to do to succeed. But all the time she's pushed along by the plot, and it's just by accident that she gets ahead. Movie seems to think that her getting a big gig and getting married is character development. It would be more interesting to see her still stuck in the same place, but wondering why she's still there. Judy Hopps in Zootopia is 10 times more introspective.
  14. All I see when I see Ryan Gosling: "Entitled douche who thinks he should have his own Jazz club. Wants to call it fucking 'Seb'" And Mia has all the depth of a kiddie pool in terms of character. Disney movies are more complex than this.
  15. See, this is why I liked the ending. They didn't get what they wanted. Throughout La La Land, I was wishing something interesting would happen. I thought back to Moonlight, and how at least that movie showed a life that's on the precipice. You want me to feel sorry for Ryan Gosling making $60k a year playing in a band? Go fuck yourself, movie. But thanks for not letting him have the girl.
  16. Just because. The Oscars saw that it was based on an unproduced play.
