  1. If it first premiered in 79 then it's from the 70s. Who cares when the rest of the world got it. Trashmerica, etc
  2. I definitely thought IM2 would come close to TDK at least on OW. Retroactively it's clear Paramount (Marvel?) sorta just assumed people would come in droves and didn't really go all out with the marketing.
  3. Watched Terminal for assignment. The VOD, Margot Robbie, neon lights, witless references to Alice in Wonderland one. Well, I'm glad Robbie is still in that stage of her career where the glint in her eye can survive even this amount of garbage surrounding her. Or she just has bad taste. Regardless, she's the only one who's alive in this thing and wow is the rest godawful.
  4. I think Panther could be a slamdunk winner in costumes and makeup (hard to imagine anything more impressive arriving this year as far as those categories go), and at least a nominee in score and production design, but anything bigger than that, count me as skeptical until I actually see critics' groups going there.
  5. from the AV Club Cannes write-up on the movie Sounds like you're in luck!
  6. I like a good deal of that movie's dialogue as it is written and delivered. Wouldn't wanna give up the "father to a murdered son" speech, for starters.
  7. For week 2 I'd recommend The Man with the Movie Camera if you want breathless 1920s avant-garde fun, The Cranes Are Flying if you want a quality emotional mid-century drama (or, from the same director, Letter Never Sent if you want a raw survival movie that leaves Gravity and The Revenant in the dust), or, if you can track it down (I know it had a tiny theatrical release in the States, at least), 2016's The Student for a sharp look at today's Russia.
  8. All of that can more or less be applied to Wonder Woman, and that was never a serious contender nor should it have been. I don't think Black Panther is on a higher enough level to suddenly go all the way.
  9. Last year I saw A Summer at Grandpa's, the 1984 live-action Taiwanese film that was the main inspiration for Totoro, and actually liked it more, probably confirming that I'm ultimately more affected by flesh-and-blood people than animated characters. But Totoro is still pretty delightful.
