  1. Rosemary's Baby for sure. The vibe of terror and paranoia in the second half is so thick you can cut it with a knife, but it's done without any jump scares. I also don't remember any in The Blair Witch Project aside from the tent being suddenly shaken at night (when they hear children's voices).
  2. Sally Field could maybe score a nomination if the movie gets a decent distributor. http://www.indiewire.com/article/sxsw-review-sally-field-delivers-a-winning-performance-in-hello-my-name-is-doris-20150314 http://variety.com/2015/film/news/sally-field-gets-cheers-for-rare-leading-role-in-sxsw-romance-1201452963/
  3. Inception is far and away my favorite score Zimmer has done for Nolan. Maybe my favorite score of his, period.
  4. Django is good but it feels like QT didn't get enough time to think the final act through, because it really needs to be tightened up. (Actors joining, then leaving the production during the shoot pretty clearly had an effect on it). The absence of Sally Menke, who had edited all of his previous films, is felt in general: many of the standalone scenes are great, yet the movie drags as a whole. And it doesn't help that the title character is maybe the fourth most interesting person in the movie.
  5. I count all his films except Django and Death Proof among my all-time favorites.
  6. I'm kinda hoping Inarritu misses out on another Director nom because no one who has won Best Director since 1998 was nominated for his next film.
  7. Birdman? Million Dollar Baby? A couple of films starring Michelle Monaghan?
  8. Roy Scheider is the lead (and is great). He plays one of four guys who volunteer to drive two trucks filled with dynamite through the South American jungle. The movie was released a month after Star Wars and tanked horribly, almost killing William Friedkin's career in the process, but it's always had a cult and since coming out on Blu-ray last year it's been pretty much accepted as either a great film or a flawed film with a handful of great moments.
  9. The rope bridge scene in Sorcerer is the definition of ownage. It shits all over 99% of today's CGI set-pieces.
  10. Also, if you like/love this movie and haven't seen La Jetee, do it ASAP. It's 27 brilliant, heartbreaking minutes.
  11. The Third Man gets better every time I see it. Possibly my favorite film made before 1960.
  12. Inside Out The Good Dinosaur Peanuts Cheatin' When Marnie Was There
  13. Has to be my favorite Branagh. Emma Thompson owns it, and I didn't expect my second favorite performance in the movie to come from Denzel who really turns the charisma up to 11 and it perfectly suits the movie. I actually found Reeves very funny in how he essentially walks into the movie, states "I am the villain", looks at everyone with sneering contempt for 15 minutes and disappears. If anyone is the weak link here it's Keaton who's trying way too hard to be funny. Even then it's an absolute delight of a movie.
  14. I actually just saw this yesterday. It's a small gem - could have been a tossed-off '90s potboiler with a ridiculous plot, but everyone involved actually decides to commit to the craziness and put on a show. Another thing that surprised me was that it was actually a hit - $38m in 1991 is nothing to sneeze at for a movie like this. Yet, looking back, I can hardly remember seeing anyone talk about it in the past few years.
  15. Looks like it's not slowing down this season. Also, Hugh Laurie! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u9qBDFmbkZg
  16. Bryan Cranston - Trumbo Michael Fassbender - Steve Jobs Eddie Redmayne - The Danish Girl Leonardo DiCaprio - The Revenant Jake Gyllenhaal - Southpaw / Demolition Could see Ben Foster - Icon Robert Redford - Truth Tom Courtenay - 45 Years Tom Hanks - Bridge of Spies Kurt Russell - The Hateful Eight Joaquin Phoenix - Irrational Man Joseph Gordon-Levitt - The Walk Matthew McConaughey - Sea of Trees As usual this is gonna be the most stacked one unless half of these performances fall flat on their faces.
