That's already happened though. Nolan did Batman movies. Now Reeves is doing Batman movies. Coogler did Black Panther. Phillips did Joker. Denis did Dune. I think whenever you have a great filmmaker who is passionate about the IP and the studios leave them alone, they usually turn out something great. I think the question from 'Barbie' is what super popular IP hasn't been mined yet? Mario was another one earlier this year.

I am way out of the loop for 'Sound of Freedom' so apologies if this has been asked. I didn't see any trailers for this movie. I didn't really see anything about it. I have heard some of the political discourse surrounding it but I've tried to stay away from that too. Is the movie actually doing really well? Or is there some chicanery going on? I saw something about it's box office numbers "not being what they seem" but it wasn't on here. What's going on with it? Is middle America really rushing out to see it in droves?

I think it's the best move to make. They'll want Zendaya to be involved in the marketing campaign leading up to the release. I think what we'll see happen is movies that are finished and awaiting the end of the year/winter release dates will move into the first quarter of 2024 and movies that were supposed to be done filming this Fall will move into the later part of Summer or maybe next holiday season. For example, Dune part 2 moves into an April/May slot and Deadpool 3 ends up moving into a Christmas time slot.

I feel like we had this discussion with the Top Gun Maverick run and then again with the Super Mario run. I agree with you by the way, but of course nothing is fool proof. There's a lot of good original ideas still out there that don't catch on with movie going audiences. Do I think comic book/ongoing franchise fatigue has set in? Not exactly. I do think people are being choosier with respect to which movies they feel they can wait for on streaming however. I think in a pre-streaming/pre-Covid world some of these movies would have done a lot better but audiences now are just like "meh, skip." Barbie is a completely new thing and has captured women preteens all the way to probably mid 40s at an astronomical level and some men are understanding that this is a movie that they will like too. It's not a "my girlfriend dragged me here" thing at all. And for Oppenheimer. Nolan is one of the handful of directors that has his fanbase and they've done a great job of letting people know that listen, this was all shot in IMAX, it's a beautiful LOOKING film and you need to see this on the biggest screen possible.

Not to get too political but I'm sure you've all seen the campaigns now AGAINST the Barbie movie from the right. Unfortunately some folks have decided that this needs to be a gender war, so with that I would not be surprised to see some places like IMDB as an example to have a little lower scores for it.

Belloni on his show today said the industry average for Barbie is still $110M and Oppenheimer is $48M but he's taking the over. He is predicting $150M for Barbie and "mid 50s" for Oppenheimer. I think he's going to be low on both LOL. Also, what's up with the industry tracking average? I think they're just plain wrong. Even at my local theater the interest is on the level of a comic book or Star Wars event.

The Box Office Buzz, Tracking, and Pre-Sale Thread

So my local AMC has IMAX and another large format, they are splitting Oppenheimer and Barbie between the two with Oppenheimer receiving the IMAX screens and Barbie on their own format. Everything for tonight is sold out. Everything for Friday afternoon is nearly sold out. Everything for Friday early evening is sold out. Still some seats left for the late showings but not many. I've never seen this at this theater outside of a big comic book or Star Wars event. -
Since when is Margot Robbie 'box office poison'? Suicide Squad was a smash hit mostly because of her. What happened to the IP after that and the studio jumbling is to no fault of her. Wolf of Wall Street was huge too though I can't really credit her for it but she did become a star with that performance. Didn't Focus do well also? She's a superstar.

The Box Office Buzz, Tracking, and Pre-Sale Thread

This is anecdotal but my timeline has been absolutely flooded with Barbie stuff from people who don't normally post about movies. Mostly women but some men too. I just think this is heading for a crazy number.
