  1. Average rating of 6 feels pretty high to me for an RT score, ha ha. Yeah, compared to the 86% it's low, but RT is such a wonky way to do things anyway. How has your system been working for you?
  2. Look at Ouija's rating. People keep saying RT is tough on horrors. Idk about that...
  3. The last several action movies from this studio: Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice RT 27 % DOM Box Office 330m Central Intelligence RT 69% DOM Box Office 127m The Legend of Tarzan RT 36% DOM Box Office 126m Suicide Squad RT 26% DOM Box Office 322m and counting Accountant RT 27% DOM Box Office ??? The RT poor reviews are consistent. You could mash them all together to describe the same movie: 1. Convoluted 2. Mess 3. So serious it makes you laugh 4. Suffocating action 5. Overbearing 6. Overambitious i.e....somebody spent a lot of money, so much so that they couldn't bear to edit what they spent their money on or couldn't hire editors The reaction by the general public? Does not correlate.
  4. Watched Girl on the Train and Denial this weekend. Pretty solid. While GotT isn't as good as Gone Girl, it had several strong performances and was well directed. I hope to see 100m+.
  5. Still haven't had a chance to see Magnificent 7 yet. I'm just glad it beat Storks. Score one for a pre-2000s genre. As for Storks, I don't think it has anything to do with marketing or RT or its quality and word of mouth. Simply, birds are not very cute, at least relative to so many other animals. Secondly, storks aren't very cute in comparison to many other birds. Sorry talking-animals, you can't win them all.
  6. As usual, I don't really give a crap about the critics. Denzel. Pratt. A Western. On IMAX. Can't wait to see it!
  7. From Variety http://variety.com/2016/film/reviews/storks-review-andy-samberg-1201865101/ So, in another marketplace, quality does not count? Also, animation moviegoers are that concerned about quality? In that case, I don't think Rotten Tomatoes is a dependable judge: The Book of Life 82% 50,200,000 DOM Minions 56% 336,000,000 DOM Good Dinosaur 77% 123,000,000 DOM Angry Birds 42% 107,500,000 DOM Kubo 97% currently 44,300,000 DOM Then again, the Variety author actually made a comparison between Storks and Sausage Party.
  8. Suicide Squad's lack of competition: Preceding Weekends: July 22-24: Star Trek Beyond, Lights Out, Ice Age July 29-31: Jason Bourne, Bad Moms Weekends afterward: August 12-14: Sausage Party, Pete's Dragon, Florence Foster Jenkins August 19-21: War Dogs, Kubo, Ben-Hur August 26-28: Don't Breathe, Mechanic: Resurrection That lack of competition sure helped Suicide Squad. Unfortunately, it caused enough competition for all the other movies to under perform (except for the smash hit Bad Moms and the two horrors) Compare that to the amazing competition other CBMs had to face, likely hurting the legs of Civil War for example: Preceding Weekends: April 22-24: The Huntsman, Compadres, Hologram for a King April 29-May 1: Keanu, Mother's Day, Ratchet and Clank Weekends afterward: May 13-15: Money Monster, The Darkness May 20-22: Angry Birds, Neighbors 2, The Nice Guys May 27-29: X-Men, Alice
  9. Why even bring Sully or Eastwood into the picture? Blair Witch Project is supposed to reach a drastically different audience. Sully is hurting BJ's Baby far more than BWP. Wingard's film is competing more against Don't Breathe, Sausage Party, Suicide Squad, and Bad Moms.
  10. Rob Liefeld endorsed Blair Witch. By acknowledging this endorsement, a film-maker would be putting a black cloud over their product. Wingard unfortunately re-tweeted Liefeld's endorsement. He just cursed his own witch movie.
  11. Yeah, this is the first year for a studio to repeat at 2b+. Disney got it done. Warner might get there. I wouldn't give the credit to Kevin Tsujihara as the studio already had the franchises making this money, but just a month ago several on these forums and some "professionals" were speculating the demise of the higher ups for the studio. That's not to say I'm happy with their movies because 3/5 of their 100m+ disappointed me.
  12. I could give you quotes from Variety, Deadline, Hollywood Reporter, Tracking Board, etc but they might be sarcastic DC fans. Btw, I'm a fan of many things and was disappointed by Suicide Squad. I don't think it's unfair to make a point there are people who want to paint the box office of these movies as a failure. For example, Rob Liefeld will continue to tell you Suicide Squad lost money. Thanks for stratifying me though.
  13. Didn't that have the lead actress from Cheers? I never liked her.
  14. I wonder if Warner Brothers will fire Kevin Tsujihara. According to the trades, this might be the most disastrous run to 2 billion for a studio. Three of the top four from the studio were termed "flops", but the studio has a very good chance at the coveted 2 billion mark anyway.
  15. Hanks top 10? 1. Forest Gump 2. Bachelor Party 3. Big 4. You've Got Mail 5. Splash 6. The Burbs 7. Saving Private Ryan 8. Sleepless in Seattle 9. Da Vinici Code 10. That Thing You Do!
  16. Well, that was a fun movie to watch. At first I kept thinking of all the plot holes, and then I figured that would just ruin my time at the theater. What crazy scenes!
  17. "Pretty wealthy" and "enough money to retire"? That guy had enough money to retire many years ago and remain pretty wealthy when going by my standards. Some would argue that Black Mass was a flop based on those numbers, just not as big of a flop as Mertedcai.
  18. One should keep in mind that not every movie draws the same critics, or the same amount of critics. The population that submits a review for a Clint Eastwood movie could be different from the critic population that submits a review for a tent pole movie. Interestingly, the first, and so far, only poor review for Sully comes from Collider. The review calls the movie an " unsalvageable mess" which is the current go-to descriptor for WB tent-pole movies in general. It rates the movie a 1.5/5. Also, interestingly, American Sniper's early reviews had similar scores and the initial bad reviews came from Drew McWeeny of Hitfix who said it was an " oddly stilted misfire "and Devin Faraci from Birth.Movies.Death who said about Eastwood " he has made not one but two of the absolute worst movies of the year ". Not to disagree with these people too much, as I didn't think American Sniper was all too great, but I can think of many more movies worse than it in 2014. Even when deserving a poor review, unless Eastwood has reach the point of dementia, I doubt he would deliver anything resembling a "mess".
  19. Yeah, all these articles saying movies won't make money or have an estimated profited of $*** do not mean much when it's just somebody's guess work. When Deadline does the same thing, it's equally as useless.
  20. I had a feeling it was going to do better than what many predicted. Too bad I didn't enjoy it as much as I wanted to. In fact, I think I enjoyed watching the negative commentary keep stretching for reasons to be negative as the movie kept exceeding expectations more than the movie itself. Legend of Tarzan, Suicide Squad, Star Trek Beyond, and Nice Guys are all strong arguments that RT has a limited effect on box office.
  21. We don't know if those numbers are accurate. However, according to that source, Disney won the Summer, followed by WB and then Universal. According to that source, those were the only three studios to have made a profit during this season. Also, I believe they lumped the movies to their parent company, hence Kubo is Universal. According to many, Suicide Squad didn't make a profit, so even if these charts are only relatively accurate, that means Hollywood must be a front for drug cartels.
  22. Interestingly, even many here foresaw the front-loading due to both the massive Thursday and the free-ticket Friday, but in subsequent days and following week, kept comparing numbers to either that Friday or that weekend which included that Friday, and did not take into account both factors. Despite several of us describing how those factors could be relevant and even our nice mod Baumer asking everybody to wait to see third weekend and beyond to lessen the influence of that first Friday, many continued to present the toxic-word-of-mouth narrative. Many say there is no bias and people want these films to do well, but it is painfully obvious to see that some people are eager to see these movies fail. That said, I believe this movie did miss its potential, and many chose to either not see the movie or wait for home release. Poor word of mouth did exist, but so did positive word of mouth, and hence some pretty strong later legs. The movie did well, despite of its flaws. I hope subsequent movies will both be better and do better. I also hope that people have seen a pattern with the three DCEU movies, and should not be surprised if Wonder Woman has a huge opening, a major drop on the second weekend, and eventually come to a strong overall number, whether it is disliked OR liked by RT.
  23. Critics definitely had an impact. How much of an impact though? Other factors were just stronger. I can't wait till Wonder Woman to see the large second weekend drop and the continued cries of the "sky is falling" next year followed by another 160m+ post-OW performance.
