  1. The performance of San Andreas, especially in a market like China, suggests that the Rock has his fans OS.
  2. I don't think it's so much the color of her skin, but just looking at places where Moana did better than FB in the US, you do see strong Hawaii ties. Didn't somebody report Ward Honolulu was up there with Souther California for attendance for Moana? I doubt you would see that for any other movies.
  3. About Moana OS. Let's apply some common sense guys. The Brits love wizarding world and don't have strong ties to Hawaii. Those depressed need to wait for Japan and Australia. Those countries have strong ties to Hawaii and pacific islands.
  4. While I agree that WOM is helping Fantastic Beasts and that casual Potter fans are coming late to the game, I still feel like many are not taking into consideration the aging fan base. There are many diehard Potterheads who just have too many responsibilities to go to the theater yet. Imagine how many teens at the height of Potterfandom are now possibly parents working in the retail or service industries. Many were not allowed vacation over TG weekend, and won't even have time over Christmas. You're looking at many fans who want to watch the movie but won't even have time till 2017. Sure, twitter-buzz is showing very strong WOM, but some of even the most fanatic Potterfans have yet to be represented and could help late legs.
  5. The Japanese also really love Harry Potter and monster/beasts ala Pokemon, so I'm glad they've got the two franchises spaced apart there. Both movies should flourish.
  6. Lots of chatter of wanting to see it again. You can really appreciate portions of the movie that capture the essence of what it feels like in Hawaii, like the feeling of cool fresh water from a waterfall or sea-salt in the air as you stand on a boat above clear waters. The Rock nails Hawaiian cheers of joy, and that's to be expected considering he was originally from here. Btw, expect the Japanese to LOVE this movie. They've always had close ties to Hawaii, and my theater had quite a few tourists.
  7. Just saw Moana. Visually STUNNING! I was very impressed. I watched it in Hawaii on a quiet afternoon. The theater was packed with what seemed like bus-loads of kids from a school excursion. Btw loved the homage to the Academy Award winning movie from last year...
  8. Hmm, I predicted better legs than the typical HP movie because the HP fan-base is older now and cannot rush out to see their favorite movie immediately. Responsibilities! Many former Potterheads have work over this Thanksgiving Weekend and December is a hard month for anybody working in retail. You could see former Potterheads having to wait till January to have any time off to watch this. Of course, this could also mean waiting for a home-release. I'm curious to see what China does, as the BO there was still developing at the end of the HP series...
  9. You guys don't think Fox has a chance at beating Disney? You're all underestimating Assassin's Creed. It's 1 billion OW will shock you all, and if not convinced, it will have a 0% drop and make 1 billion the next weekend too. In 2014, when Fox took first place, 2016 was predicted to be an even stronger banner year. All hopes lie with that video game movie.
  10. Franchise wars? Is that the same as when girls argued over which Boy Band was cutest i the 90s? Same snarky back-and-forth, but this time with a little hint of 30-year-old's testosterone coupled with 10-year-old's hero-worship? "Just you wait for Back Street Boy's Millennium. It will show you the meaning of being lonely and break all records!"
  11. I meant Indian films, such as 3 Idiots, for approximately the last decade have been my preferred foreign films. This year, I am favoring the Korean films much more.
  12. Foreign films have been my favorite this last decade. Usually the Bollywood stuff gets me, but the Koreans have been stepping up their game.
  13. I didn't read anything about the movie other than the title. I thought I was walking into a traditional drama and walked away pleasantly surprised. I love eagerly anticipating my American blockbusters too, but movies getting 3+ trailers and so many preview clips kill the movie experience. That's my fault, though. I don't even watch any Marvel trailers anymore after Age of Ultron to preserve my enjoyment. Alas, I have no pleasant surprise but instead the same-old, though I loved the fight-choreography and the visuals for the most part in the two movies this year. Even a Marvel RT 100% wouldn't excite me anymore because that'd simply be the movie that aped Iron-Man 2008 best. I was hoping Doctor Strange would break that trend instead of re-enforcing it 10 fold.
  14. I agree. I spent the whole weekend eating and shopping at highly rated venues with people who care very much what other people think. They are affraid to watch any movie unless it both appeals to them and has a high RT rating. As expected, the only few films they watch a year are Disney. They list Mad Max as the only time RT failed them, and the only reason to apply their own sensibilities when evaluating a movie so that they don't waste their time with unsafe movies. Anecdotal, but still scary when considering the potential damage of the RT filter...
  15. Everybody should check out The Handmaiden. Very strong period piece drama with some fun twists by the director of Old Boy, and interesting presentations of various soft-to-moderate pornography both explicit and implicit. Fifty Shades of Whatever sucks in comparison. Along with Train to Busan and The Wailing, the Koreans have had some great stuff this year. Or wait for your next boring blockbuster.
  16. I don't think FB puts too much of a dent in Dr. Strange. That'd be the third weekend already. The vast majority of DS's BO will have occurred. Competition, in general, is so high now and we're seeing a boom v bust situation continuously with only the "event" movies really succeeding. Dory and Secret Life of Pets coexisted for example.
  17. Hacksaw was pretty good. The ending was a bit over-dramatic, though. More Mel Gibson movies please. Dr. Strange was almost as disappointing as Suicide Squad for me. I understand why they chose to emphasize a small portion of his origin, but the movie ended up rehashing too many elements from Iron-Man 2008. There has been criticism of Marvel movies having a formula, which I have not embraced, but Dr. Strange was supposed to be ground-breaking. Having a repeat plot/character, especially those elements from the first MCU movie, hardly pushes any boundaries. The visuals, even though stunning, could hardly be called innovative. Inception was in 2010. I thought we would see something MORE akin to Salvador-Dali paintings come to life. On more than one occasion, I was having Green Lantern 2011 flashbacks, which is a bad thing. Iron-Man > Winter Soldiery >>>>Ant-Man, IM 2, IM3 > Dr. Strange, imo. Also disappointed with... On the topic of mutant comic-book movies, X-Men First Class was the best X-Men movie, and superior to many Marvel Studio and DC movies, including Guardians of the Galaxy and Batman Begins, in my opinion.
  18. A) DS will be frontloaded just because a ton of Marvel Studio fans rush to see the movie as soon as possible. This shouldn't be too shocking. B ) You guys freak out way to early. DS is going to make bank on Saturday. Deadline and Variety are wrong all the time. This is almost as bad as overestimation of MT and RT correlation. C) I can't wait to see innovative visuals of DS. From the commercials, all I'm seeing is Inception, so maybe this movie will pick up even more steam when marketing actually shows something new. D) Whatever happens, this weekend will be glorious because Mel Gibson is awesome.
  19. Ouija was okay, but the RT audience score was more representative of the movie than the RT critic score in my opinion.
  20. I'm interested to see Cruise-factor vs RT-factor on this one. Ouija is at 90% RT from a hot studio in a hot genre prior to Halloween. Ouija can't lose to sub 40% Jack Reacher, right? Then Cinemascore reports A from 35+ women who list Cruise as the main draw and Jack Reacher wins the box office.
  21. The final battle scene was so X-Men-like. I hope there's a second one. My wife says the books are a bit darker than the actual film. The 65% Peregrine got a 5.9 on RT. 63% Mag 7 and 64% Storks also received a 6. Same for the 78% rating for the Kevin Hart film with 6.0 average rating. Then there's the 5.7 49% The Accountant and 6.4 100% Gimme Danger. Sigh...RT...
