Going to somewhat parrot the others but as an animation fan, I find it sad and hate that Illumination who has been reinforcing the “animation is for kids” by pandering to their audiences which cause most animation studios to do the same bubblegum entertainment. It’s not fair when shit like Minions get to $1.15B and movies like Spider Verse make barely over $350M. Sure you have quite a few good animated films for everyone that break the mold in terms of crazy success. I just wish they and some other studios would step up their quality. That said: If you like Illumination, it’s fine, hell I like Despicable Me 1 and Sing.

Dragon 3 is about to be the first animated film since Grinch to hit a $60M OW, as well as the first non Disney/Illumination/Pixar animated film to hit a $60M OW since The Lego Movie. Dragon 3 may also be the first non Disney/Illumination/Pixar Movie to hit $200M DOM since The Lego Movie. Also, this breakout proves to me that when Dreamworks/Universal does Shrek 5, it hits $200M OW.

Jokes aside Alita is doing what I was expecting O/U RPO WW and around $100M DOM, which although not a juggernaut gross, it isn’t the flop most of us were expecting and is still a strong result. Fox was smart moving it from December, it would’ve been iced.

I was told Alita would easily crush $1B WW.

Cars 3 is the best Cars movie and is one of my top 10 for Pixar so....

This Is The End and The Lego Movie

For those of you who have seen it how does The Hidden World rank against the first two Dragon movies (I am one of the few that like Dragon 2 better than 1 and think both are Grade A films)

No it’s the same animation studio as the last one (Sony Pictures Imageworks) and the original was ordinary. However I am digging the design of Leslie Jones’ Thanos Bird and “I can’t believe it’s not Elsa” phallic Ice Castle reminds of a prehistoric bird in a way. I think it may too, it looks a bit better than the original, that and I trust Thorup Van Orman (creator of Flapjack, which brings back nostalgic memories), besides I truly believe Spies In Disguise or Abominable won’t be a threat to late legs.

I really want to see How To Train Your Dragon 3 this weekend but I have an online exam due Sunday and an upcoming one on Tuesday. As well as some homework, if I can finish it after work and am not winded I’ll go but if not I’ll go next weekend.

Again, this shows Universal’s marketing power for family films. Almost makes me wonder if Detective Pikachu should’ve stayed with them. No one in their right mind thought Dragon 3 has a shot at $200M let alone increasing their sequel, something no DWA film has done since Madagascar 3 in 2012 as well as overcoming the Netflix show stigma and animation sequel stigma. Let that sink in. DWA is about to have a major comeback thanks to Universal. If I were then I’d move Abominable to the weak November, and it’d do Trolls numbers. We shouldn’t underestimate Pets 2 either.
