  1. Tarzan also being an example of over performer, for an other somewhat clear overperformer while not clear hit type imo. Having seen any since T2, but are not making younger CGI version of the Arnold by now ?
  2. Has of now it is more cinematic universe attempt.., when the formula is hard to execute (James Cameron Titanic brought a trend to attempt the love story set in epic historical event background, didn't set in) it can be hard for them to set trend, when it is relatively easier to execute (the movie having a 3D release, Pixar look of animation/the Simpsons look of animation, YA) trend catch on more easily.
  3. North america, I think Awaken had a good edge above everything else, in how long (before and after release), how big the conversation and the media size was, the amount of product placement got ridiculous. Outside going by box office it is really hard to judge the event nature outside your market. Movie annual box office share: Year Title WW box office Movie BO Share 2009 Avatar 29.4 2.7772 9.45% 2010 Toy Story 3 31.6 1.067 3.38% 2011 Potter 32.6 1.3415 4.12% 2012 Avengers 34.7 1.5188 4.38% 2013 Frozen 35.9 1.2765 3.56% 2014 Transformer 36.4 1.1041 3.03% 2015 Force Awaken 38.4 2.0682 5.39% 2016 Civil War 38.8 1.1533 2.97% 2017 Last Jedi 40.6 1.3325 3.28% 2018 Infinity War 41.7 2.0484 4.91%
  4. Well yes specific movie, that a different talk than caring (consciously or not) which incorporated entity is releasing it. And I imagine franchise ones being the major fuel here. I really do not doubt that come with the most haters also, but WB/Disney certainly have a giant amount of "defender" relative to pretty much anything else, they are not like all other studios.
  5. I am not sure, if we look at the twilight/hunger games Thursday previews numbers, The Fault of our stars, 50 shades, etc... female franchise can be quite rushed on theater OW, I think that distinction is more age than gender ? Horror is quite female skewed and do not tend to be a leggy genre. But you could be right. I think how strong it was on the older demo could be in play here, rare for such good reviews to be embargoed that close to the release date ?
  6. I am a bit curious what is the difference in mean in context versus out of it on that one ?
  7. Do you really think MGM has 5% of the Disney defender on most platform ? The Weinstein Company LLC ? Paramount ? LionGates ? Sony Picture ? Disney brand has certainly something close to unique, a bit like experiment show it for Coca-Cola/Channel or Ferrari I would not be surprised if we would see something in a brain scan of more people exposed to the logo / castle of Disney than for most property/studio.
  8. Isn't that common to open around 100m or lower and be in the summer for a SH movies ? Ant Man, Captain America, Thor, Guardian of the Galaxy, Iron Man, Spider Man Homecoming, None came close to that multiplier.
  9. In reviews it is not that common, in film critic it is extremely common, the role of the critic being to put a work in the context of the filmmaker body of work and it's time.
  10. Well they use a working title for that very reason (is it that bad if people leak the working title ?), they often use a working title for a working title (because everyone know that there is a working title being used)
  11. Yup that the person people think didn't put his heart and soul into it.... (that the person that phoned Hyundai and decided to place their products in their movies, that the person that build a toy division and asked for their feedback before making the movie)
  12. Probably why he was such a good pick for the planned reboot: https://lwlies.com/articles/jordan-peele-twilight-zone-reboot-unnverve-viewers/ https://www.dreadcentral.com/news/288548/jordan-peele-reveals-the-twilight-zone-episode-that-inspired-us/
  13. They did stream BladeRunner on their current streaming service HBO Now (https://www.forbes.com/sites/nelsongranados/2015/04/16/hbo-now-opening-the-floodgates/#50eef7b07956): https://www.seattletimes.com/entertainment/movies/new-on-hbo-in-june-2018-it-blade-runner-2049-succession-it-will-be-chaos/ I am not sure how different the new service will be (is it anything more than just a PR move / change of name ?)
  14. https://www.comingsoon.net/movies/news/656729-2018-transformers-movie-is-a-bumblebee-spin-off-film#/slide/1 When Bumblebee project was announced, they also announced a Transformer 6 2019 release (and Wahlberg was signed for T6 according to the Sony leak). Could have been heavy PR manipulation from the start and always, but director talk right from the beginning talked about a complete different atheistic/energy/scale/scope than the Bay mega affair: https://www.cinemablend.com/news/1752259/how-the-bumblebee-director-plans-to-be-different-than-michael-bay Obviously maybe they not only always planned and making a reboot with Bumblebee or once T5 box office started rolled or later, etc... But the very fact the movie exist, I am not sure indicate they are letting go of a popular in growing market and made still over 600m in is last entry franchise, That a studio that going back to Top Gun
  15. Is it possible to have shareholders quote on this ? That CEO arrived in march 2013, let a year or to for him to be responsible of the slate. Revenues / Operating income 2010: 11,622 / 1,107 2011: 12,638 / 1,263 2012: 12,018 / 1,228 2013: 12,312 / 1,324 2014: 12,526 / 1,159 2015: 12,992 / 1,416 2016: 13,037 / 1,734 2017: 13,866 / 1,761 2018: ATT merger affair and quite different result or accounting, hard to compare but what look like an excellent (for a movie studio) 17% margin, 18.1% ebitda WB seem to have performed clearly above is predecessor, not being a company it is hard to evaluate, but Time Warner stock price was around $55 in march 2013, the stock was sold to what a bit over $100 ($103 ? to Att) around 5 year's later, if I was an stockholder I would have been really really happy with it. The guy video game/multi media/streaming experience could be really prized by some studio, like say perfect match for Sony.
  16. Guardian of the Galaxy 2 made 141.38m after it's 65,263,492 and a very similar -55.5% drop. Same absolute legs (and thus a worst multiplier for Captain Marvel) would put the total at 406.2m Same relative legs would put the total at 412.15m Guardian 2 faced Wonder woman week 5 and was a sequel. Captain Marvel finishing between 406 to 412 to be expected ? Or summer week days difference will show up for Guardian legs at some points ?
  17. Are you a bit young ? Otherwise that opinion would surprise me, Aquaman was one of the very few known by non-American that never read a SH comic book or watched SH cartoons like me. That why he was used in Entourage or made fun on family guy, it was a referent almost everyone got, he was one of the most known SH of them all, below the Superman/SpiderMan/Batman but on the tier just below. Has for having been helped or not by the giant Justice League world marketing campaign by having been featured in the big trailers, I would imagine that yes that marketing/awareness building money after all.
  18. Didn't follow anything, but what do you mean by DOA ? That the movie will never be made ? Has for a complete unknown, that sound impossible to say from the exterior, it is not like we known about the uncredited writing work of actors. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0439572/fullcredits?ref_=tt_ov_wr#writers/ Directed by John Francis Daley Jonathan Goldstein Writing Credits (in alphabetical order) Gardner Fox ... (characters) Joby Harold ... (screenplay) Harry Lampert ... (characters) Ezra Miller Grant Morrison
  19. Didn't never made and release is long version named the whole bloody affair ? https://www.slashfilm.com/kill-bill-bloody-affair-small-produce-big-results/
  20. People do not necessarily know the DP/production/script had product placement command and restriction, this is a completely different point if it optimizing your movie quality vs revenues. I am not sure what could be a clearer example, for some movies an argument could easily be made that the product placement gave X resource and worth the trade off, those are not low margin/risky affair that need them.
