Can we wait for Cinemascore before we talk about audience reception? It honestly is the best way to gauge audience reception and how it will affect legs. When will the cinemascore for Mary Poppins release btw? On Thursday or on Friday along with the other releases?
I mean they were all carried by brand name and nostalgia for the LOTR movies. Same reason why the prequels made so much money. Quality wise, they were all a travesty.
Back from the travesty that was The Hobbit movies and The Lovely Bones. Also, PJ just wrote and produced (and if you ask me, probably ghost-directed) one of the worst blockbusters all year and that movie released last week. It's quite funny that he was attached to one of the worst and one of the best films of the year and they both released with a week.
Douban score, not Maoyan. Huge difference. Searching has an 8.5 on Douban. Didn't really break out, did it? The only reason people talked about it pulling that sort of breakout because if some people (around 3000 people to be more precise) rated and loved the film, then there is a possibility the movie will have good WOM.
I want to see how this impacts China. Chinese love these movies mainly for the action sequences. I think the action at the end was added quickly (which is why they are so generic) because the producers realised that without much action, the film wouldn't do well in China. Not sure if the action in the last act would be enough.
I'm going to meet with my family next week for the holidays and I don't know whether I should take my mother and my sister to Mary Poppins or Spider-man. They aren't really superhero fans but they also don't like new American musicals a lot (they hated La La Land, which I watched during the holidays with my whole family during Christmas holidays two years ago, for being too cliche and ripping off from older musicals). My mother really wants to watch a "Disney movie" whatever the fuck that means.
How much will Spider-verse affect these numbers? It seems to be doing alright in presales and Douban score is really good. Will it be big enough to affect Aqaman?
That's because the Chinese didn't like the movie. Probably too American for them. This movie is probably too American for them too but the Douban score is giving me some hope.
Lego Batman made 37 million overseas opening weekend. 120-150 mil OS sounds about right for Spider-verse. I think it will make around 70 mil OS-China and China should be 50-80 million based on WOM. 120-150 final OS gross.
