  1. Yeah, it's clear that you are just as dense or willfully obtuse as Phillips. Of course Wick is just an example and it's bad example. I'm not even basing this on critical reception but on how movies are perceived in general. A serious drama, particularly one with an awards campaign, is going to be treated more seriously and thus face more scrutiny. If you're going to tackle mental illness or some other real social issue and using the Joker to do so and you don't understand why your movie may be seen as more dangerous or problematic, that's on you. Figure it out. It's not that hard.
  2. Lol at "out of context." This is a direct quote from Phillips. “The movie still takes place in a fictional world. It can have real-world invocations, options, but it’s a fictional character in a fictional world that’s been around for 80 years. The one that bugs me more is the toxic white male thing when you go, oh I just saw John Wick 3. He’s a white male who kills 300 people and everybody’s laughing and hooting and hollering. Why does this movie get held to different standards? It honestly doesn’t make sense to me.” What am I missing here? Pray tell. It doesn't make sense to him that a typical action movie is not held to the same standard as his "real movie" aiming for social commentary. Lol Of all the directors to be an apologist for, you've chosen Todd Phillips. How dreadful.
  3. Here's what I know 1) Keanu is not white 2) the Wick movies do not confirm that Wick is white. 3) Phillips evoked Wick to make some point about how his movie is receiving unfair treatment and that was just dumb. So you have no point and Phillips should just shut up. The end.
  4. This is so dumb. No it's not whataboutism since you accused me of being caught up on it. You are the one insisting that John Wick is white. Keanu does not look white, nor does the movie confirm that Wick is white. I'm not sure if you really are this dense but my post about trivializing critics was about the fans. Read it again, carefully. My point about Phillips is about his inability to accept that his movie won't be viewed the same as a movie like John Wick. It's a dumb comparison that further proves that he should just stop talking.
  5. I don't hate this movie but you can keep insisting on that if you like. And Chernobyl at least looked interesting, it didn't look like an imitation of a miniseries we've seen before. So basically, you are saying Keanu looks white? Lol You are the only one caught up on it since you chose to highlight that one part of what I said about Phillips' recent comments. You want to speculate that *maybe* Phillips didn't really mean that he wanted to make a real movie? Oh... 😂 I never said this movie is dangerous or will incite anyone. Stop projecting. The point is that a movie that share similarities to real life and wants to push some sort of social commentary will be critiqued differently than a movie like John Wick. I also never said you were trivializing critics. That was a general comment in response to another post. Not sure why you thought it was about you specifically.
  6. Imagine thinking I'm "so mad" because I have no interest in a Joker movie. Why would I give it a chance if nothing about it looks interesting to me? Why do I think it will say nothing interesting? Because Todd Phillips has never had anything interesting to say. Keep reaching with that Ruska Romani argument. As I said, there are many Romani people who don't look white nor would they be described as such. This hardly confirms Wick's whiteness. Of course you would like to argue that context doesn't matter. Lol Yeah, doesn't matter that domestic terrorists resemble someone more like this Joker than John Wick. Fact is, when a movie aims for social commentary, it's going to be judged differently than your normal action movie, as it should be. This is what Phillips wanted...he wanted to make a "real movie" and so he should have been prepared for all that comes with that. So many fans were convinced that this was going to be some groundbreaking, game-changing movie... like nothing you've seen in the genre before! And now that it isn't getting universal praise, they can't handle it. They are doing their best to try trivialize even legitimate criticism and dismiss all critics, American critics anyway.
  7. Good lord. Are you actually reading my posts? Did I say anything he said changed my opinion? Have I not always made it clear that I have no interest in this movie or confidence in Phillips' ability to tell an interesting story? My opinion has always been the same... that there is literally nothing I have seen or heard about this movie or Phillips or any movie he has done that makes me think that he has anything interesting or original or thought provoking to say. The fact that he has since made multiple ignorant comments is just more proof of that, not *the* proof I needed. Get it?? Yikes at you thinking that Ruska Roma is tantamount to white. The Romani people are originally from India and many of them even now would not be described as white. Hardly the proof you seem to think it is. Wick may not be a good person but I'd say it matters that 1) he didn't want to kill 2) he doesn't kill or go after random, innocent civilians 3) he's not positioned as mentally ill 4) the JW movies aren't aiming for social commentary or some larger message about our society. The latter continues to highlight the most hilarious defense for Joker, a movie that's praised for being more than a popcorn movie but its defenders can't help but try to compare it to such movies to expose some sort of hypocrisy. Oh, the irony...
  8. Huh? It is an awards bait movie, we know he took "inspiration" from other movies. I don't need to have seen the movie to know this to be true. Lol I have already made it clear that I think Todd Phillips is a mediocre filmmaker who has nothing interesting to say with this movie. His recent comments only further confirm that. That is basically what I said in my post. Also, did I miss the part in the John Wick movies where it's confirmed that he has two white parents?
  9. Lol It truly is something to see you lot resort to name calling because you can't handle criticism of this movie. Pretty clear that Phillips himself wanted this awards bait rip off to be seen as a "real movie" which makes it all the more hilarious to see him complain about no one questioning "white man" Keanu killing peope in John Wick. Lol!
  10. Just saw that Todd Phillips blamed the "far left" for the controversy over Joker, lol. Couple that with his "real movie" comments and basically calling Keanu a white man and I'm even more convinced that this man has no thoughtful social commentary to offer with this movie. It's good that WB isn't allowing interviews at the premiere because he's very likely to say something ignorant or cringey.
  11. Not exactly the same situation. The Batman brand was at its lowest back then. No one was really clamoring for another Batman movie. There is already plenty of hype for this upcoming movie and it will only increase with more great buzz.
  12. I don't think it will be tough. It's Batman. Lol If the movie is well received, it's going to open big.
  13. The Batman could easily be top 2 if all goes well (great marketing, reviews, wom.) Don't underestimate how much interest there still is in Batman, especially another good solo Batman movie.
  14. Interesting how fans scoff at the idea that a movie could cause a shooting but then are perfectly ok with blaming the media if a shooting does happen. Lets be clear, no one would be to blame but the person who'd commit such an act.
  15. I wasn't going to respond to this but I must say that "not all white men..." gave me chuckle. Thanks.
  16. What I realize is that there are plenty of misconceptions about mental illness. That it is the automatic defence for white men who terrorize is one of the reasons this movie is receiving criticism. The idea that it's spreading awareness via a character like Joker is laughable. The irony is apparently lost on you.
  17. Lol What nonsense. If you can't figure out why pushing the above narrative with a character like Joker could be problematic and lead to plenty of criticism, I don't know what to tell you.
  18. Good lord, maybe you are obtuse. My point isn't about being afraid that this movie will inspire people to commit violence but about why this movie is receiving criticism that other movies in the genre have not. I'm not even on the "this movie is dangerous" train but that isn't to say the narrative this movie pushes isn't problematic. Todd Phillips opened the door to all kinds of political critique when he decided to portray Joker as a loser neglected by society. You want to be daring or edgy or try to make some political statement with a movie, well, you gotta take the bad with the good.
  19. I'm not sure if you're being willfully obtuse or not but again, the issue is that this Joker resembles violent men we see in real life and if some see this movie as making such men sympathetic, that's a valid criticism.
  20. So are plenty of other issues in CBMs. Lets stick to the major distinction: the characters at the center of story or the ones committing the acts.
  21. IW is a full fledged comic book movie, for one...it has plenty of superheroes to offset its major villain. And last I checked, there not a major real-world issue with large purple men wanting to wipe out half of the population (the same would apply to someone like Killmonger). It's truly hilarious now seeing fans claim that other comic book movies or villains weren't criticized the same way when the same fans spent months propping up this Joker movie exactly because it was not like any other comic book movie. Lol
