Please. How is China going to have higher standards for Hollywood stars than its own male stars?? Lol Overall, I would say that Asian actresses are hotter than the men. You keep naming Killmonger but MBJ was not the lead. And I personally don't think he is all that good looking but he got a lot of attention for his portrayal of the character, not his looks. Same when Chadwick first showed in CW as T'Challa. The performance is ultimately what will matter and if Simu is good, more attention will follow.

His fanbase was certainly a factor but if that's all Disney cared about, they would have pursued Zayn Malik for Aladdin. He was a popular fancast with a huge fanbase. Fact is, Harry having a notable role in an Oscar-nominated Nolan movie gave him credibility as an actor, whether you think he was good or not.

I'm sorry but this discussion is hilarious considering the popularity of action stars like Jackie Chan, Donnie Yen, Jet Li. Even if you look at someone younger like Eddie Peng, he is no more handsome than Simu to me. Not that any of this matters all that much because Shang is obviously meant to be rep for Asian Americans, first and foremost. And the success of this movie is going to depend way more on the quality of the script, directing and acting than anything else.

Until we actually hear that someone else has been cast, I won't be completely convinced that Harry isn't the guy. There was talk yesterday of his manager following then unfollowing Disney Studios on Instagram and it's just odd to me that he has been the only name attached to the role, especially since it's clear that Disney wanted a big name. As for Marshall, he may not be some visionary director, but calling the man a hack is silly. He's good enough.

Lol at McCarthy being a "movie star"... That was not my point though. It was more so about Beyonce and Will Smith being big names who can create buzz. The news of McCarthy playing Ursula was not met with the same buzz or excitement as even this news about Harry Styles, let alone Beyonce or Will Smith.

McCarthy is no Beyonce or Will Smith and Disney knows that which is why they were courting Harry. Seems obvious that they already saw Halle as a risk so they wanted someone else who could bring in the female demo who may not have been thrilled with her casting. Perhaps it will be an unknown but that clearly was not their preference.

I don't see it as any better than the numerous other coming of age stories that have come out recently. It's certainly not in the same league as Moonlight. And if we're simply talking better coming of age films that didn't get as much hype, Girlhood, Eve's Bayou, Real Women Have Curves make Lady Bird look stale by comparison.

I'm with you here and I have to say, I count myself as a Nolan fan because not only is he talented but he isn't nearly as snobbish as the "film nerds" who love hyping him up. Remember he was one of the first to say Black Panther would be Oscar nominated, also had no problem casting "boy band member" Harry Styles in a serious war film and made a CBM trilogy without trying to transcend the genre. Not that he's without flaws (I wish he were better at writing/casting women characters) but I find him far more likable than some other film nerd faves.
