  1. Eh, I still think interest was there for Wonder Woman 1984, despite the state of the franchise. Sure, we'll never know. But I assume similar things for Bats 2 (hopefully not reception-wise lol).
  2. Looks like the girls and the gays will have to go to both this and Wicked... hope they don't bite off each other much.
  3. Best thing about this? Tashi Duncan opened to #1.
  4. Joker's success and approach had a lot of new hooks and brought in a different audience from the usual one - surely much of the interest in the first place was drawn to the film bc of the IP/character, but the themes/edge and Taxi Driver-ness/hype for Phoenix performance/festival run and discourse brought ppl in. The success of The Batman relied on it being a Batman film. You could argue the first film already performed like a new reboot that was potentially impacted by the overall reception of the DC brand, but still got people in because people love Batman and his mythos. The performance of a Max spin-off show don't mean people won't show up for the sequel. As for the DCU and the rest of DC... I do think quality and gaining goodwill is important... hopefully they are budgeting these things smartly. I do think Superman (& Supergirl) reboots out of the gate is a smart approach.
  5. Penguin viewership is not gonna determine whether people care about DC or not. Anyway, I dreamt they made Gotham City Sirens instead of Birds of Prey and I was watching the trailer for it in my sleep. I fancast Janelle Monáe as Catwoman in my dreams. Poison Ivy was a blend of every famous living ginger actress.
  6. I say Sonic 3 does o/u $80m ow and triples that by the end of its run. Mufasa probably opens o/u $70m but quadruples it.
  7. Oh yea I know plenty of men wo are going to be seeing this w/o wife and kids... Paul Mescal has his fans...
  8. https://deadline.com/2024/09/disney-frozen-jennifer-lee-jared-bush-1236094164/ Don't know if this has been posted yet. Jared Bush is replacing Jennifer Lee as CCO. Lee will direct Frozen 3.
  9. Doesn't read like he's more involved than Lasseter was during his time, or Lee on WDAS projects. I did enjoy this very much, it's not far off from the first one (at times it goes even wilder in creativity and it is hilarious, with some complex ideas thrown in there). Couldn't help but feel Turning Red is a better take on very similar themes though.
  10. I really want a Wanda movie but part of me hopes they are still cooking Shang-Chi 2 and can get it done by 2026.
  11. That last weekend of July release is a very good investment for Marvel, they really cooked by locking it for the next couple of years. Still playing in 3K theaters is wild!
  12. First Wonder Woman is one of the leggiest Summer blockbusters in recent history. It had crazy strong wom. There was a lot of hype for WW84... and then people watched it.
  13. I like to think of a what if scenario in which covid never happens, no lock downs. I doubt much changes about the state of the DCEU, maybe it takes a little longer to die and the reboot looks a little different. Wonder Woman 1984 does make a lot of money, but it's a number like $700-750m, where they still feel ok with rebooting without moving on with a part 3, especially with the poor reception, kinda like ASM 2. The Suicide Squad probably does around double what it ended up doing, ig?
  14. There's nothing quite yet that we can point to for a potential Batman pt 2 drop-off. Not saying it won't happen, but when it does, it could be many things. One thing I can see impacing general audiences is if Gunn/the DCU announces its own Batman and we see the casting and development of that film... maybe. Thus far, The Batman is one of the most popular films of the 2020s, very close to the first Dune. I think the sequel grows a bit, maybe even gives WB one of their biggest openings. Unlike Joker, it calls for a sequel, it directly builds up a sequel, the first very much operates as an opening chapter to the arcs of its characters (especially Bruce and Selina) and it probably won't add genres/mediums that are too unconventional for the audience of the first. I think it's one of the safest films for the DC brand in a while.
  15. That read actually did make me more hyped for the film! Sure, things could be messy, but it does seem to have a compelling story to tell, the approach to writing Moana, the fact that they did all the groundwork for the supporting characters, the discussion about the songs... I like what I see. Also, did not know this had three directors!
  16. Whole Venom trilogy and no Shang-Chi 2... man. At least I'm happy for a blockbuster queer franchise. Your move, Gunn and Feige.
  17. Suicide Squad hype was insane tho... and it did have kinda meh/poor legs for an August blockbuster with no competition. I do think it's in part why The Suicide Squad did worse than other day-and-date WB releases (though it was a big departure from the first one, with a different roster, no Will Smith, R rating, no direct follow-through on the threads of the first, no Joker hype etc.) Surely, it wasn't anywhere near as toxic as BvS word of mouth, but I think if it was well liked it could have gone even higher.
  18. I will throw in that marketing is key to a lot of these upcoming films (Superman, BNW, Thunderbolts) and point out that Superman has been getting a lot of attention for every BTS pic or anything that has come out, yet Joker 2 announcement, behind the scenes pics and every piece of marketing, all got a lot of attention and buzz.
  19. Defo didn't expect this to track as low as it has been doing, for sure thought it would outopen its predecessor, even by a small margin, even if it still ended up with a lower overall total. Still not sure how secure we can be, maybe this does just happen to play out wayyy more backloaded than any comp out there even if it never gets any better reviews and buzz. But I do think a key to the success of the first one was how it just felt like one movie, not part of a larger franchise/universe, not something "designed" to be a blockbuster, just a film with something to tell/a buzzy lead performance on an iconic fictional character. In that sense, a notable drop-off adds up tbh.
  20. Damn, guess the first Joker was quite well liked out of Venice! I still remember it had very polarizing reviews out of the American festivals... wasn't it rotten at some point?? Anyway, it ended up with a polarizing reception and this one seems to have that right out of Venice... so far not much to indicate how audiences will receive it. Interesting how many consider it much better and many much worse! Still think it can't lose enough steam to miss a sizeable opening, so there's that. Legs are a different conversation, but it was always gonna play like a much more frontloaded sequel.
