So many Monday morning articles commenting on the weekend box office where barbie ‘thrashed’ Oppenheimer, which seems to really miss the point of the phenomenon they’re writing about.

On the other hand lots of non film people in my Twitter are talking about Oppenheimer. Not always positively, but still talking. It’s slowly reaching a critical mass where you have to see it to keep abreast of the discourse, which is a goldmine for movies.

The UK’s prime minister has posted an I’m-just-a-regular-guy tweet saying his family are off to see barbenheimer, apparently oblivious that his children are legally too young to see Oppenheimer so really they’re all just seeing barbie.

First time I bothered to read that wiki page and the line “Upon release, Barbie received generally positive reviews while Oppenheimer received critical acclaim” seems amusingly passive aggressive.

well yeah, cinema was really popular in the early 70s then it was really popular in the late 70s for different kind of films. Not sure what that proves. streaming and what it means for viewing habits is a whole other ball game. Way more of an existential crisis than single purchase home video a few decades ago.

I subscribe to the pessimistic view that we’re in the twilight years of the cinematic format, but the weird side effect of that is that box office records have increasing weight to them. It really could be a long time before a lot of them are broken again, and in some cases likely never.

Yes, depends on Narnia. Dark Knight + Inception was a pretty spectacular one-two punch, particularly as the latter was an original story.

Is the actors not being able to do promo really that big a deal if the movie’s already in the can? Clearly studios knows more about it than I do if it’s even being debated.

The gigantic Leicester Square cinema I’m seeing Oppenheimer in on Tuesday now has multiple sold out shows that day, suggesting the mania is going well beyond the weekend.

if I remember correctly TDK got 158 off a 67m Friday, so agreed it seems like a lowball. Don’t know what the TDK previews situation was though.
