  1. Can’t believe I’m saying this but I do feel sorry for her. Having to smile and promote a movie, on your own because a strike, that you know will bomb and significantly harm your career must be shit.
  2. Holy shit that takes me back. Don’t think I’ve been there since the Superman Returns meltdowns.
  3. Intrigued by deadpool 3. Shawn Levy seems like a curiously tame choice, but maybe this is one of those ‘the director doesn’t matter’ scenarios.
  4. I can see Evans coming back with his tail between his legs, but RDJ is surely done with this shit. right?!
  5. is the cat motif part of the source material and/or the first movie or was it something added here to be meme-able? I never saw the first movie but it looked like a fairly serious origin story, so it’s striking how deliberate the tone-change has been for this one.
  6. All the while, Marvel was bleeding money, with a single episode of “She-Hulk” costing some $25 million, dwarfing the budget of a final-season episode of HBO’s Game of Thrones Woah
  7. this forum has always had a weird, naval-gazing habit of claiming threads are so much worse than they are. Never understood it. the projections for the film are bad, and people are talking about that. It’s all been perfectly civil.
  8. Sincere question as I haven’t followed the production at all: what’s the gimmick/USP of the next captain america movie? I know Harrison Ford and Hulk(??) are in it but why are people paying to see it after the tv show?
  9. Not gonna be down on the clip as it feels like kicking a three-legged puppy at this point but I do have to wonder when marvel will finally accept that their ‘undercut every moment of possible tension with a joke’ strategy may not excite people quite the way it used to.
  10. A fitting finale for the depravity that is Disney’s live action remakes.
  11. Ok, finally found out the character. After my initial “that’s it?” reaction it’s hard to deny it makes sense. We all know what’s coming with the MCU. In fact it’s looking more and more like its salvation the way things are going.
  12. As much as I hate that Jackman sold out and didn’t let Logan be his last wolverine outing it’s hard to deny that, from a purely cynical business POV, the timing feels right. No, x-men wasn’t the biggest franchise but it was a totem of the genre back when it ruled the zeitgeist, and unless the film is shit it’s hard not to see deadpool blowing up with Jackman aboard.
  13. Yeah, I really don’t understand the haters. I think the movie looks incredible. MCU films always need a gimmick, and in this case they have a really strong one with three superhero leads. And not just that but the dynamic between them all looks hilarious. But the marketing is also smart enough to know that you have to also establish a threat, hence the strong villain. I’m glad marvel learned from the early criticisms of their throwaway antagonists, clearly that couldn’t be further from the case here.
  14. This starts terribly, like an obnoxious parody of a Pixar movie (what if elements had feelings and lived in a city, etc) but the love story saves it… somewhat. I can see why it became a sleeper hit - fans of romantic melodramas are underserved and will take what they can get.
  15. I wouldn’t be surprised if this gets good reviews (most MCU films do, let’s not forget) but it’s worth noting that a blockbuster would have to be absolute dogshit to not get a glowing report from empire.
  16. For shitposting haterz like me these box office projections are hard to get excited about. You’d always prefer a general optimism that gives way to the crushing hammer blow of opening weekend underperformance. But now the low opening is priced in weeks before release. ☹️
  17. if any movie ever made was “woke”, it’s barbie. I get that cherrypicking examples makes the argument easier, but 2023 ain’t the year to do it. Edit: ok, confirmed troll. More fool me
  18. Friendly PSA, since a few people have said it: ‘reactionary’ isn’t interchangeable with ‘reactive’. ‘Reactionary’ has political connotations. 🙂
  19. TIL that What If exists. Anyway, as easy as it’d be to denounce Disney’s strategy with MCU and SW shows I think they’re just canaries in the coalmines of the impending streaming reality-check. All these services have doubled-down on a business model that looks increasingly brittle.
  20. she was one of, of not the, biggest stars in the world at the time and the announcement of her slot was met with unanimous approval. Poptimism was in full-swing by 2013. It was a fucking amazing show but it didn’t fall into the category of ‘rule-breaking’ by that point. (this isn’t a point I particularly want to labour: it was originally just a throwaway acknowledgement of a cliche.)
