  1. Dunkirk's a total wildcard. Could make under 100m or over 200m at this point.
  2. Aliens isn't scary. I love it, but the sense of sheer dread from the first film just isn't there.
  3. Yeah, it's often forgotten just how naturalistic the dialogue in Alien was for such a big movie. It's almost like watching a documentary at times — which of course makes it scarier when the shit hits the fan.
  4. If you're a fan of the Room the book is unmissable regardless. Or even better: listen to the audiobook. Sisetero's impressions of Wiseau is constantly hilarious.
  5. I run very hot and cold with Aaronofsky (often within the same film) but there's no question he's a director worth paying attention to. I look forward to seeing him put Lawrence through the ringer.
  6. Weird that this didn't blow up OS. A reminder that comedy doesn't translate as well as straight action, perhaps.
  7. Genuinely curious to see what Malcolm's function is in this one. Saying 'bringing back dinosaurs is a terrible idea' for a third time?
  8. Never understood the Citizen Kane hate. Even/especially by the standards of when it was made it zips along, has an engaging central mystery, compelling acting and witnessing the birth of so much technique that came to define modern cinema is exhilarating. But then again, it is in black and white.
  9. Does it, though? There's a big explosion, but the rest is moody ambience with little hint of the plot. If anything the marketing's target seems to be the original's fans more than the GA. As it happens I do think it'll have more action because audience expectations have gone so far in that direction. But between Villeneuve, Scott and Fancher's sensibilities, a sanitised retread in the vein of Robocop and Total Recall seems out of the question at this point. Unless it's the biggest cocktease in movie history.
  10. Not to defend a film I haven't even seen yet, but it's worth bearing in mind that one could easily make a seemingly action-packed trailer of the first film with some clever editing. That's certainly what contemporary audiences went in expecting.
  11. In fairness I can imagine a lot of talented actresses wincing everytime they see model-turned-actress Cara Delevigne given yet another high-profile gig. She hasn't been better than 'mildly serviceable' in anything. But looks and notoriety winning out is nothing new in movies, I suppose.
  12. Don't feel bad: almost everyone goes into the movie expecting action, and are then mildly appalled to find it's a slow, ponderous meditation on what it means to be human. Many of those viewers then hate it forever, while some rewatch it a few years later and bask in the aesthetics.
  13. Beyond the studio I kinda doubt anyone involved gives that much of a fuck about box office. They get to play around in the holy grail of cinematic universes, which is enough. This movie doesn't strike me as the reboot of a franchise.
  14. I hadn't thought to ask, but this is definitely R-Rated? That's good. (And yes, to those whose temple veins are throbbing, something can be good without being R-rated, but this movie was never going to appeal to kids anyway.)
  15. I don't know. I haven't seen the movie. But the poster above is right: if this maintains the spirit of the first film then 'badass' is the last thing they're going for here.
  16. Looks visually astonishing, but then it had to be to justify its existence. Glad they're keeping the plot details vague. I flinched when reminded that Leto was in this, but maybe he'll be ok.
  17. God bless Harrison Ford. He's trying harder than usual to not sound like he'd rather be anywhere else.
  18. A 'simple, self-contained horror movie'? That's all I really wanted at this point. Glad to hear Scott didn't drop the ball.
