  1. Gitesh set up high expectation by claiming it would pass 1.3B today or tomorrow. Will it be doing so on Tuesday?
  2. When it came out, there was a discussion over whether NWH being the first event film during the pandemic made it even bigger than it would have been. Can't say for sure though as the Tom Holland and Zendaya power couple had amassed a huge Gen Z following and adding Maguire and Garfield brought in older audiences too. It would have been humongous pandemic or no pandemic. TGM and Barbie became zeitgeist movies with solid to superb openings but then turned into unmissable water cooler topics, which was reflected in amazing legs. Kinda meh regarding Avatar 2's performance. Obviously it made crazy numbers but it was also the sequel to the biggest film of all time and there was no competition for a month and a half. Curious to see how it would have done during an insanely crowded frame like this summer.
  3. TGM for sure. But only one doll stood up to Avatar 2 in the entirety of January
  4. I don't think you'd want your serious Peter Parker portrayal to be alongside Zoolander and The Room 🤷‍♂️
  5. Eh the brand is in major trouble and to believe otherwise just because the CFO came out saying 'Nothing to see here. Everything's fine' (in itself a red flag) is delusional That doesn't really take away from my point. Lightyear's performance and Elemental's opening only justified the concern over Disney undermining Pixar as a brand. And now we're back to the failsafe of sequels. The brand is fucked if TS5 and IO2 underperform.
  6. And that was Infinity War/Endgame's fault more than FFH's. FFH is better than HC IMO because it is less overstuffed, has less of mentor/father/owner Iron Man, more of Zendaya and well, Mysterio is fun. HC could have been something really special if it had actually given Tomei's Aunt May more to do. FFH had to write her out of the plot because of the Europe trip, which I understand was needed to give Peter a break after the IW/Endgame trauma pile. Anyways more than half of the MCU is worse than the Spidey trilogy so find it weird people are fixated on the Spider-Films of all things.
  7. Technically GL had a successful comics run in the 2000s because of Geoff Johns and that... was basically it. He was always more niche and even the John Stewart GL became more popular than Hal Jordan because of the animated series. Honestly Geoff Johns is a major issue with DC's unappealing lineup of movies. He's the reason they got to Shazam, Black Adam etc. before characters and teams people actually know about like Teen Titans*, Harley & Ivy/Gotham City Sirens etc. because he wrote those characters. It's like if the MCU tried to push GotG, Inhumans and Eternals before Avengers because some Eternals/Inhumans comic writer was calling the shots on the movie side. I see the same mistake being repeated in the Gunnverse too. Like who's gonna check out Swamp Thing and The Authority beyond a very tiny core fanbase? *Blue Beetle would have fared much better onscreen if he had been introduced in a Teen Titans film and then gotten his solo ala Black Panther/Holland Spidey getting launched by Civil War.
  8. He was only talking about Elemental. I was talking about Pixar post-pandemic in general. Also the fact that he had to come out and say Elemental made profit is telling in itself. The leggy nature of the run and the OS heavy collections give it a smaller profit margin than the one regular metrics give you vs. TLM which had a big opening and DOM heavy performance.
  9. Yeah no, a peak summer Pixar film shouldn't have been opening that terribly in the first place. It's good that Elemental managed to save face but a leggier run is less profitable for the studio with the studio/theatre profit sharing ratio sliding window. Being more OS heavy also hurts the profit margin. That DOM total would still be considered as a 'flop' number for a Pixar movie pre-pandemic. Pixar is not out of the red zone yet.
  10. JLo has (usually) been putting butts in seats since years though. Yeah, I don't think Supes is boring and unrelatable but that he needed the uwufication (in lack of a better term) that MAWS gives him to spell out the appeal for Gen Z. And the thing is, it suits his character VERY WELL. I've always felt the Lois and Clark romance plays more like a female fantasy than a male one and the show is fully capitalizing on that. A bit unsure of how Gunn will handle the characters, though casting Rachel Brosnahan as Lois is a good sign. It's mind-boggling the success of the original Wonder Woman film didn't lead to a WW animated series for those interested in getting to know her world better. Instead we got what's basically a Harley & Ivy show but then where is Margot Robbie's Harley & Ivy movie?? DC is all over the place with synergy.
  11. I didn't know this about no white and black love interests for Will but makes a lot of sense. BTW Michelle Yeoh would have killed it as Mal. Also, is losing Cotillard in TDKR a loss? XP We may have also gotten a racially accurate Al Ghul for once. DC credited El Diablo for Latinos driving the original Suicide Squad box office numbers. And I third the idea of focusing on Batman characters first before jumping to the rest of the DC Universe. That's what they did with animation in the 90s to great success. *I feel Legacy may be a hit though because there's a Superman/Lois romance meets action anime playing right now on Adult Swim that's doing incredibly well and turning Gen Z into fans of the character.
  12. LMAO Deadline! It's Barbie's 5th weekend after 4 weekends at #1
  13. If the conservative reaction is anything to go by, seems to be a case of When you can't beat em, join em. Reminder that even Super Mario Bros was initially trashed for its feminist Princess Peach but then was quickly embraced by the same groups once it was obviously a hit. There are some weird takes popping up here and there (like in Deadline comments section) saying Barbie is anti-woke and a satire of the 2020 election 'steal' (!) Can't look like a loser rooting against a bonafide winner so might as well try appropriating it.
  14. TDK had no stiff streaming competition, drop in theatrical attendance due to pandemic, another Nolan film releasing on the same day, shortened window before digital release, coming towards the end of a super crowded summer (2008 was crowded but nowhere near the bloodbath of 2023) etc. It also had the Heath Ledger effect to propel it. Still, getting upset after 15 years is dumb.
  15. Dubai has become very LA so not super shocked. Also, the entirety of the Middle East is not Taliban run Afghanistan. Increasingly, many cities and regions are becoming more vibrant and diverse with expats from all across the world. It's not the most liberal place on the planet, but things are slowly changing.
  16. She's close friends with Reynolds and Lively. He appeared in her You Need To Calm Down music video and Blake directed her I Hope You Think About Me MV.
  17. Yeah just make her sing for like 90% of her screentime and she'll be great. I know she will kill it at writing a mutant empowerment BOP.
  18. Celine? Michael Buble? Lol. Taylor Swift IS the music industry right now in a way that no one has been since Michael Jackson.
  19. Louis and Lestat still got it tho on AMC's Interview With the Vampire show
  20. If Deadpool is pushed back, chances of Disney putting The Marvels in May is greater than leaving the timeframe open for other studios.
