In ye olden days it was only movie and TV stars who enjoyed that privilege. TV though is still doing well. Cmasterclay mentioned some good examples and I'd like to add Abbott Elementary to the list of smash hit comedy shows as well. SNL has been mostly terrible since forever but I'd argue Bowen Yang and Chloe Fineman from the current batch are carving out niches for themselves and have major breakout potential.
