HOLY SHIT, the latest episode of X-Men 97 was fire. If the MCU's version of the mutants will be anywhere as good as it's on this show, then Marvel's back firing on all cylinders.

Yeah I edited my original post. It's just that 1995 was very unique in that a very popular medium that was at the pinnacle of its success was instantly cut down because of an unfortunate letdown that happened at the same time as a brand new medium put out a great film. That obviously led to a decline in interest for the successive hand-drawn films (ugh, what could have been if Hunchback had preceeded Pocahontas). But things won't be as extreme as 1995 so Disney needn't worry about taking creative risks. In fact, I'd say Pocahontas wasn't a risk as it was Disney doubling down on everything that THEY thought made them a critical and awards darling at the time.

Unfortunately for hand drawn films, the far superior Toy Story happened in the same year as the terrible Pocahontas which led to people subconsciously assuming CGI was an evolved medium than hand drawn. The stars aligned horribly for hand drawn as the drop in quality between TLK and Pocahontas was much worse than an Endgame and Black Widow and even worse than an Endgame and Quantummania. A much stronger film than Pocahontas would have put up a better fight for 2D films.

It's not the pre-teaser but the timing. Late evening Pacific drops have it harder than early morning drops like the pre-teaser as Asia is already sleeping and it's too late for some of Europe as well. Let's wait for the full 24 hours report IMO. This is obviously gigantic but there are still a few more hours for people getting back from work to view it for the very first time and drive up the ## even more.

Sexism exists ofc and I feel Gaga could have asked for more (unless she has backend deals) but TBF she REALLY wants that Oscar and Phillips is handing a golden opportunity to her on a silver platter which many may not post the Gucci snub which I feel was the elitist Academy telling her to stick to her lane (ditto for JLo and the Hustlers snub). Gaga might even stand a chance to be a double nominee/winner on the same night if she is credited for Best Original Song. So I feel this film and role are doing equally as much for her as she's doing for them. OTOH no Phoenix, no movie. He already got HIS Oscar so he has far less inclination to return, so of course he can ask for whatever he wants.

THR put this article out on the Monday BEFORE BA came out. Scoopers then declared it was a power struggle (16:30 onwards) so it didn't come out of nowhere. We just didn't know that The Rock would be COMPLETELY shut out

There were rumors before Black Adam came out that Dwayne Johnson and James Gunn had competing visions for DC. Johnson apparently wanted to build up to a Black Adam centric Justice League/Suicide Squad crossover which is why he got Cavill back onboard and why Superman was working with Amanda Waller in the BA stinger. Apparently she was getting JL together to take down Black Adam and possibly the SS members who survived and defected at the end of TSS would side with BA. However, Johnson's rivals got the better of him Succession style, had Gunn appointed, announced his hiring on the Monday after BA release, confirmed Cavill was out and then proceeded to put out a hit piece against The Rock in The Wrap sometime later. The first paragraph is mostly rumors (tho it's interesting that Waller and Superman working together in BA collaborates with them) but we saw everything in the second paragraph play out in public. Which is why I'm not entirely sure this wasn't a big cluster fuck decision. Will the rebooted Gunnverse really be more profitable than letting the Rock plan out his JLvsSS movie? 🤷‍♂️

You can't say that any of these actor/director salaries are undeserved though. Gaga will have to do a lot of heavylifting as she's most probably songwriting too or at least part of a songwriting team aiming for a Best Original Song win. Considering the amount of hype the Little Monsters are already generating for this, I'd actually say she could have asked for more lol. Joaquin didn't even need to come back as he already got his Oscar and it's not like Joker is the only thing his career is dependent on, so that amount of money was needed for convincing otherwise there would be no film. And of course Todd Phillips's salary is also going up after the way the first film exploded. Re "street level", people were literally joking about how this might be like The Hangover 2 where it's the same plot but in Bangkok so Phillips needs some credit for being ambitious and doing something very different with a sequel. I would have said I hoped there would be no The Last Jedi effect as a result but even TLJ made 1.3B+ despite all the whining and teeth gnashing. The trailer reception will give us a better idea of how big this could be. I feel marketing could try seeding in a "fan" trend like moviegoing couples dressing up in Joker and Harley colors (clown makeup would be too much lmao) and women wearing red and black to mimic the Barbie pink wave.

Yeah this. The biggest so called "woke" flops like The Marvels, Strange World etc. bombed because they were so neutered, inoffensive and mediocre. In an attempt to please 'both sides', Disney usually ends up pleasing no one and puts out cynical, executive note ridden empty fluff. The biggest successes with diverse leads have actually been politically edgy and had a lot to say like Black Panther and now X-Men 97. Even Barbie was far more politically inclined than majority of the fare Disney puts out with minority and women leads.

This kid has so much range going from the Matilda the Musical movie to this.
